An early Pleistocene Mg/Ca-δ18O record from the Gulf of Mexico: Evaluating ice sheet size and pacing in the 41-kyr world ArchiMer
Shakun, Jeremy D.; Raymo, Maureen E.; Lea, David W..
Early Pleistocene glacial cycles in marine O-18 exhibit strong obliquity pacing, but there is a perplexing lack of precession variability despite its important influence on summer insolation intensity - the presumed forcing of ice sheet growth and decay according to the Milankovitch hypothesis. This puzzle has been explained in two ways: Northern Hemisphere ice sheets instead respond to insolation integrated over the summer, which is mostly controlled by obliquity, or anti-phased precession-driven variability in ice volume between the hemispheres cancels out in global O-18, leaving the in-phase obliquity signal to dominate. We evaluated these ideas by reconstructing Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) meltwater discharge to the Gulf of Mexico from 2.55-1.70Ma using...

Similar millennial climate variability on the Iberian margin during two early Pleistocene glacials and MIS 3 ArchiMer
Birner, B.; Hodell, D. A.; Tzedakis, P. C.; Skinner, L. C..
Although millennial-scale climate variability (<10ka) has been well studied during the last glacial cycles, little is known about this important aspect of climate in the early Pleistocene, prior to the Middle Pleistocene Transition. Here we present an early Pleistocene climate record at centennial resolution for two representative glacials (marine isotope stages (MIS) 37-41 from approximately 1235 to 1320ka) during the 41ka world at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1385 (the Shackleton Site) on the southwest Iberian margin. Millennial-scale climate variability was suppressed during interglacial periods (MIS37, MIS39, and MIS41) and activated during glacial inceptions when benthic O-18 exceeded 3.2. Millennial variability during glacials MIS38 and...

Small mammals from the Late Pliocene Oosterschelde dredgings Naturalis
Reumer, J.W.F.; Mayhew, D.F.; Veen, J.C. van.
A description is given of the fossil small mammal remains that were found during dredging activities in the Oosterschelde estuary, the Netherlands. The following taxa are encountered in the samples: Mimomys pliocaenicus, Mimomys reidi, Mimomys tigliensis, Mimomys newtoni, Trogontherium sp., Beremendia fissidens, Sorex (Drepanosorex) praearaneaus, and Galemys kormosi. The find of one m1 of Microtus oeconomus is considered to be a contamination. The fauna is of Late Pliocene age, and may appear slightly older than the classic Tegelen fauna. In terms of mammal zonation, we consider the age to be MN17.

Hystrix zhengi n. so., a brachyodont Porcupine (Rodentia) from early Nihewanian stage, early Pleistocene of China Naturalis
Weeks, D.J. van; Zhaoqun, Zhang.
A lower premolar from the Longgupo Cave, Sichuan, China and three lower premolars from the Liucheng Gigantopithecus Cave, Guangxi, are described as Hystrix zhengi n. sp. The localities Longgupo and Liucheng are of Early Nihewanian age, which correlates with the Late Pliocene (Villanyian) of Europe. The specimens are considered to represent a late occurrence of a brachyodont species, agreeing with the replacement of brachyodont Hystrix species by hypsodont ones in Europe during the Late Pliocene.
