The occurrence of Scotch broom Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link (Fabaceae), is reported for the first time in Brazil. The species has been registered in the species-rich Campos Sulinos grasslands, in the Campos de Cima da Serra, and in the Serra do Sudeste. Naturalizing populations were frequently formed in natural habitats near to human settlements, where prevailing land uses and disturbances facilitate dispersal and establishment. The plant is an invasive species that has globally caused significant damage to biodiversity and economic losses. In Brazil, the species has a strong potential for spreading into a wide range of ecosystems. The Atlantic Forest biome and part of the Pampa biome, together known as the Campos Sulinos, represent optimal areas for the... |

BACKGROUND: The mortality of lung cancer (LC), increases each year in the world, in spite of any advances, in development of new drugs to advance stages of LC. The high incidence of LC has been associated with smoking habit, genetic diversity and environmental pollution. Antofagasta region has been reported to have the highest LC mortality rate in Chile and its inhabitants were exposed to arsenic in their drinking water in concentrations as high as 870 μg/L. Non-invasive techniques such as biomarkers (Automatic Quantitative Cytometry: AQC and DR70) and Auto Fluorescence Bronchoscopy (AFB) might be potentially useful as a supplementary diagnostic approach and early detection. Early detection is one of the most important factors to intervene and... |

As diseased shellfish show only very seldom symptoms, any mortality event can be a disease suspicion. In theory, monitoring of mortality events in shellfish can thus provide a tool for early detection of infectious diseases in order to implement effective control measures. This consists in passive mortality event reporting by shellfish farmers to the local competent authority. Sensitivity of the detection of mortality events is a key quality indicator for this type of surveillance. Since 2008, increased mortality outbreaks occur in Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in France, leading to economic losses. It is important to evaluate how much the outbreaks have altered the quality indicators of the reporting system and if this modification is long-standing,... |
