Treatment with Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) aqueous solution prevents hepatic redox imbalance, elevated triglycerides, and microsteatosis in overweight adult rats that were precociously weaned BJMBR
de Oliveira,E.; Lima,N.S.; Conceição,E.P.S.; Peixoto-Silva,N.; Moura,E.G.; Lisboa,P.C..
Early weaning (EW) leads to overweight, visceral obesity, hyperleptinemia, and insulin resistance in adulthood. Treatment with Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) improves obesity and insulin resistance in these animals. Here, we evaluated the effects of chronic treatment with yerba mate on the redox balance and liver morphology of overweight early-weaned rats. To induce EW, we wrapped the dams with bandages to interrupt milk access during the last 3 days of lactation. Control pups (C) had free access to maternal milk for the full 21 days of lactation. On postnatal day (PN) 150, EW offspring were subdivided into the EW+YM group, which received the aqueous extract of yerba mate (1 g/kg bw by gavage once a day for 30 days) and the EW group, which received water...

Elevage intensif du loup Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Coves, Denis; Gasset, Eric.
Different seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) intensiv rearing technics have been experimented in the pilot scale unit of our laboratory. During these upscalfing operation, the results obtained allow us to compare costs related to each fingemng production method. Closed system combined with early weaning with an efficient micropellet saves at least 69 % of direct production costs by comparison with an open system with Arternia during larval phase. However if closed systems are commonly used by private hatcheries, larval micropellets are always at experimental step.

Phospholipids vs. neutral lipids: Effects on digestive enzymes in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae ArchiMer
Wold, P; Hoehne Reitan, K; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Rainuzzo, J; Kjorsvik, E.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary lipid classes (phospholipid vs. neutral lipid) and level of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) on growth, survival and digestive enzymatic activity in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) larvae. Larvae were fed enriched rotifers from mouth opening and were weaned to formulated diets during a co-feeding period lasting from 17 days post hatch (dph) to 24 dph. Larvae were fed exclusively compound diets from 24 dph until the end of the experiment. Three isoproteic and isolipidic compound diets with gradually decreasing levels of DHA and EPA in the dietary phospholipid fraction (diet PL3 >PL1 >NL1) and increasing levels of total dietary neutral lipids (PL3 <PL1 <NL1) were used. Larvae fed...

Type of corn and grinding degree in a concentrate supplied to suckling calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Ferreira,Cibele Santos; Silva,Fabiano Ferreira da; Veloso,Cristina Mattos; Bonomo,Paulo; Oliveira,Julinessa Silva; Silva,Vinícius Lopes da; Schio,Alex Resende; Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vínhas.
The objective was to assess the effects of a concentrate consisting of two types of corn: flint and dent, with three different grinding degrees (1, 3 and 5 mm), as a function of intake, performance and digestibility of three crossbred dairy suckling heifers. A randomized block design involving 54 crossbred heifers in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was used to assess intake and performance patterns. In order to assess digestibility, the experimental design was completely randomized, consisting of 24 crossbred heifers. Weighting and measurements of height at withers and thoracic perimeter were performed. There was no significant interaction between grinding degree and corn type for any of the studied variables. The daily intake of concentrate dry matter was...

Evaluation of mannan-oligosaccharides offered in milk replacers or calf starters and their effect on performance and rumen development of dairy calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Jackeline Thaís da; Bittar,Carla Maris Machado; Ferreira,Lucas Silveira.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the route of administration of mannan-oligosaccharides in the diet of dairy calves and their effects on performance and plasma parameters indicative of rumen development. Following birth, twenty-four male Holstein calves were used in a completely randomized design and assigned to the following treatments: Control; 4 g/d Bio-Mos® (Alltech Biotech.) added to starter concentrate; and 4 g/d Bio-Mos® mixed into milk replacer. Animals were housed in individual hutches with free access to water, and fed 4L/d of milk replacer until weaning at six weeks. Calves also received 23g/kg crude protein of starter concentrate ad libitum. Fecal scores were evaluated daily. Body weights, growth measurements and blood samples for...

Effects of the weaning age of calves on somatic development and on reproductive performance of beef cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva.
This study evaluated body development and reproductive performance of beef cows whose calves were submitted to early weaning (76 days of age), or conventional weaning (148 days of age). It was used 141 Braford cows that calved in 2004, 2005, and 2006 to evaluate weight at calving at 76 days, weight at calving at 148 days, weight at the beginning and end of the breeding season, variation of the average daily weight, body condition, pregnancy rate, and calving interval. Dams of calves weaned at 148 days of age showed daily weight gain higher body weight and better body condition at 148 days of age. The weights at the end of breeding season and average weight gain during the breeding season were higher in early weaning cows than in conventional cows....

Productivity and efficiency of cow herds submitted to two weaning ages R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva; Restle,João.
It was aimed in this work to evaluate the productivity and efficiency of beef cows submitted to weaning of their calves at 76 days (early weaning) or at 148 days (weaning at conventional age) after calving during three consecutive years. It was evaluated pregnancy rate, birth and weaning, gain weight of the calves and cows at conventional weaning, weight at conventional weaning of calves and cows, production of weaned calves per cow and calf production index. Pregnancy rate in the herd submitted to early weaning (86.34%) was higher than in the conventional weaning (55.5%). Early weaning cows showed higher birth and weaning rates when compared to conventional weaning (83.6 and 83.6% vs. 47.5 and 44.5%, respectively) besides a higher production of calves...

Influence of weaning age on the reproductive efficiency of primiparous cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva; Restle,João.
The effects of weaning age (90 days or 156 days) of female beef calves were evaluated on their subsequent performance from the beginning of the first pregnancy and the end of the second breeding season, at 22/24 months of age. During pregnancy, heifers were managed as a single group on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture; after calving, on bristle oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.); and on Brachiaria humidicula pasture during the second reproductive period. The characteristics studied were not influenced by calf weaning age. Heifers submitted to early or conventional weaning weighed 354.5 and 351.9 kg in the post-calving, and 363.4 and 359.2 kg when they weaned their calves. Average daily gain during the breeding...
