As part of a larger project financed by the European Union programme "Community initiative PESCA" on the study of "small scale fisheries" in Aquitaine (France), an estimation of the stock of clams in the Bassin d'Arcachon has been conducted. A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The clam Tapes philippinarum, which appeared in the basin following a series of aquaculture experiments in the mid eighties, is now the main species accounting for more than 90% of the abundance and the biomass, largely overcoming the European species Tapes decussata. We analysed a few aspects of oyster culture in New Caledonia. Oyster culture there is not very important, one farm producing 30 tonnes of Japanese oysters per year and the other one, 3 tonnes of rock oysters. Mangrove oyster deposits are traditionally exploited, and this exploitation lead to a decrease of the densities and biomasses observed in the most exploited estuaries. On the four monitored sites, the maximum size observed is comprised between 7.2 to 10 cm, for a mode comprised between 3.6 and 4.8 cm. The follow-up of the activity of the boats practising offshore fishing in the North-West of the La Réunion Cbaies of the Possession and Paul Saint) was carried out over one year(April 86 - March 87) thanks to the application of a strategy of sampling allowing the collection of the following statistics: total effort and by machine, captures total and by species.The study allowed a first approach of the space-time distribution of the activity of the fleet. It reveals the very high participation of the yachtmen in the halieutic exploitation of the studied sector. It also highlights the importance of tunas in the captures, which in weight are largely majority. |

In Thau Iagoon (Mediterranean Sea), shellfish are cultured in suspension. Molluscs are reared on ropes that are suspended on frames. Principal species concerned by breeding are Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus galloprovincialis and, in a less extent, Ostrea edulis. A new sampling method was developped to assess the total stock of cultured shellfish and was tested in July 1998 and April 1999. The total stock was found to be 19500 tons (± 1120 SE) in 1998 and 14100 tons (± 830 SE) in 1999, thus exhibiting temporal variations. La connaissance des stocks en élevage est un élément important de gestion de la ressource. L'appréciation de l'adéquation entre la disponibilité trophique du milieu et la biomasse d'animaux filtreurs rend ces évaluations indispensables. Dans le cadre de la gestion des écosystèmes conchylicoles côtiers, le stock en place est un élément clé, ainsi que sa variabilité spatiale; les performances de croissance et de mortalité (rendements biologiques), sont également des données nécessaires à une gestion rationnelle. In the scope of the study of the "on-bottom/off-bottom" mortality model in the south of the Marennes Oléron Bay, the result of the 2003 multidisciplinary study (Dynamor) appears to be the hypothesis of an acute stress, "ultimate" trigger of the mortality episodes in June. In 2004 we aim to look for the nature of this stress through the physico-chemical analysis of the sediment (Eh, pH, sulphides and ammoniacal nitrogen), the organic matter and chlorophyll load on the surface of the sediment between April and July. La connaissance des stocks commercialisables est un atout dans la gestion de la campagne de commercialisation. L'Organisation des Producteurs d'huîtres de Marennes Oléron, consciente des avantages que serait cette connaissance de manière précoce, a donc demandé à l'IFREMER, lors de la contractualisation profession - IFREMER 2001, de mettre au point une technique qui permettrait d'acquérir ces données de façon aussi simple et précise que possible. The expansion of shellfish culture businesses (oysters, mussels, clams...) gives way to a competition for the use of limited food resources, especially in the Marennes-Oléron basin where water circulation is slow. Increasing the amount of cultivated molluscs leads, from a biological point of view, to:- a drop in growth performances- a rise in chronic mortalities, higher and higher, due to a weakness in the physiological state with a lack of stocks which would have compensated the habitat seasonal shortages (end of winter, etc...)- a greater weakness to diseases, linked to a deficient physiological state and a density rise which increases the proximity rate and thus, parasite propagation speed.For these primary reasons, and for the future of oyster culture,... |
