| The importance of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) for the economy of Brazil and as an energy alternative to oil derivatives is indisputable nowadays. According to IBGE, in 2013, with a production of about 28.2 million tonnes and productivity of 63.3 tons per hectare the state of Alagoas has come to occupy a prominent position in the Northeast of Brazil. In this sense the present study aims to analyze the economic importance of sugarcane in the formation of the Gross Value of Agricultural Production (GVAP) in nine municipalities in the region of the Coastal Tablelands of Alagoas State.
