Economic Governance to Expand Commercial Wetlands: Within- and Cross-Scale Challenges Ecology and Society
de Blaeij, Arianne T.; LEI Wageningen UR; Arianne.deblaeij@wur.nl; Polman, Nico; LEI Wageningen UR; Nico.Polman@wur.nl; Reinhard, Stijn; LEI Wageningen UR; Stijn.Reinhard@wur.nl.
Commercial wetlands are defined as wetlands directed by an entrepreneur with the intention of making a profit. The combination of ecosystem services that commercial wetlands can provide seems to be an attractive societal perspective. Nevertheless, these wetlands are not developed on a large scale in the Netherlands. This paper discusses different types of economic governance that could facilitate the development of new commercial wetlands and addresses challenges that have to be overcome. We conclude that developing governance solutions that address ecosystem services with different scales is crucial for the introduction of commercial wetlands. Also, distinct and autonomous property rights of entrepreneurs need to be addressed.

Breeding objectives for a Nellore cattle rearing system PAB
Carvalho,Caio Victor Damasceno; Bittencourt,Thereza Cristina Calmon de.
Abstract:The objective of this work was to define the traits that should be included as breeding objectives for Nellore cattle, according to simulations with a bio-economic model for rearing systems. The economic values (EVs) of the traits were calculated as the differences between the profits due to an increased performance of 1% in each trait, with the others traits remaining constant. To determine the impact of each selection on the revenue system, two scenarios were simulated based on the traits being selected. In the first scenario, the adopted selection criteria were: weaning weight (WW), weaning rate (WR), yearling weight (YW), and mature cow weight (MCW). In the second scenario, the cumulative productivity (CP) of dams was used as an indirect...

Economic Principles for Saving the Cooperative Extension Service AgEcon
Hoag, Dana L..
The Cooperative Extension Service is an outstanding success story for education, but a model whose value is now in question. I focus on economic principles that apply to the question, "Is it time to end Extension, and if not, how can it be saved?" Six principles are identified: public goods, competitive advantage, privatization, long-run sustainability, business practices, and political economy. There is cause to support Extension, but leadership is needed to establish a common direction and to implement changes. Strategic planning would be helpful to identify these changes and to make Extension's value known to clientele and policy makers. Includes biography of Dana L. Hoag.

Land Use Change and Ecosystem Valuation in North Georgia AgEcon
Ngugi, Daniel; Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bergstrom, John C..
This study seeks to forecast land use change in a North Georgia ecosystem, and estimate the economic value of the ecosystem using benefit transfer techniques. We forecast land use change based on a structural time series model and a simple growth rate model. The study suggests a lower bound willingness to pay value of about USD 16,000 per year to ensure compliance with fishing and drinking water quality standards with regard to fecal coliform bacteria and dissolved oxygen. Conservation efforts are likely to cost less than the cost of defensive behavior or ecosystem restoration.

CRIAÇÃO DE VALOR ECONÔMICO EM COOPERATIVAS AGROINDUSTRIAIS AgEcon
Santos, Ercílio.
The aim of this work is identifying and analysing the creation of economic value in an agroindustrial cooperative in the south of Minas Gerais, using the EVA® (Economic Value Added). In specific terms, we sought to analysing investment, financing of operational capital, and the financial structure of the cooperative as bases for the creation of economic value. In that sense the work had as theorical background, the aspects concerning financial management based on value creation, preceeded by a literature review on cooperativism with an emphasis on the specificities of the structure of capital in cooperative organizations. The research was carried out by means of a case study starting out from the financial statements of 1995 through 1999, furnished by the...

VALUING BOTANIC COLLECTIONS: A COMBINED TRAVEL-COST AND CONTINGENT VALUATION SURVEY IN AUSTRALIA AgEcon
Mwebaze, Paul; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The economic value of biological collections in three major botanic gardens in Australia was estimated using the Travel-Cost (TC) and Contingent Valuation (CV) methods. The study used truncated count data models to control for the non-negative integer and truncation properties of the number of visits to botanic gardens in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney. We estimate consumer surplus values of approximately $34 per trip to each botanic garden, resulting in the total social welfare estimate of approximately $96.9 million in 2010 Australian dollars. This result is relatively high compared to similar studies conducted in other countries. Willingness to pay (WTP) for entry fees and or higher parking charges for access to botanic gardens were also investigated....

Economic Value of Information: Wheat Protein Measurement AgEcon
Miao, Ruiqing; Hennessy, David A..
In this paper we study U.S. wheat farmers’ willingness to pay for near infrared (NIR) sensor that can segregates wheat grains according to their protein concentration. We first develop a microeconomic optimization model of wheat farmers’ segregating and commingling decisions. Then we use U.S. wheat prices and stocks to estimate a wheat protein stock demand system. This allows us to establish the effects of changes in the protein profile of wheat stocks on protein premiums. The paper’s simulation section combines the results from the microeconomic optimization model and from the econometric estimations to simulate wheat farmers’ WTP for the sorting technology. Preliminary findings from the simulation show that a typical hard red winter (hard red spring)...

Land Use Change and Ecosystem Valuation in North Georgia AgEcon
Ngugi, Daniel; Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bergstrom, John C..
A model of land allocation at the aggregate watershed level was developed assuming profit/net benefit maximization under risk neutrality. The econometric land use model was analyzed as an equation by equation SURE model as all the independent variables were the same for both equations. In analyzing effect of land use change on water quality, we took year 2005 as our baseline and postulated three land use scenarios. We applied Benefit Transfer techniques to value water quality changes resulting from land use change and estimated lower bounds for WTP to improve water quality to meet the FCB criterion for drinking water supply and fishing waters and BOD (DO) criteria for fishing waters. Water quality modeling revealed that land use change would result in...

The Existence Value of Peat Swamp Forest in Peninsular Malaysia AgEcon
Mohd Azmi, M.I.; Cullen, Ross; Bigsby, Hugh R.; Awang Noor, A.G..
Forests form the dominant natural ecosystem in Malaysia. About 55% of Malaysian land area is forested and endows a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Peat swamp forests constitute a significant component of forest and account for about 75% of the country’s total wetlands. Many peat swamp forests have already been converted to new land uses including palm oil plantations, agriculture and housing. The south-east Pahang peat swamp forest (SEPPSF), located at Pahang state is the largest peat swamp forest cover in Peninsular Malaysia and is believed to be the mainland Asia’s largest and intact peat swamp forest. It harbours unique flora and fauna, provides benefits and services of national interest and supports the livelihood of the aborigines (Orang Asli)...

Testing the embedding effect in the valuation of lagoon recovery Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Guillermo; Cancino,José; Villar,Susana.
The contingent valuation method was employed to assess the benefts of recovering the Laguna Grande de San Pedro de La Paz in Chile’s Bío-Bío region and to analyze the possible existence of an embedding effect. Our results indicate that there is not a perfect part-whole valuation effect and that there is an imperfect substitution relationship between the two analyzed projects. In addition, when assessing the joint construction project of a main sewer and a recreation park on the north hillside of the lagoon, we determined that households were willing to pay an average monthly amount of $6,114 for the associated beneft of the environmental improvement. This amount would contribute $ 358,977,396 per month to the project and a total value of $4,307,728,752....
