Large-scale genetic patchiness among NE Atlantic populations of the brittle star Ophiothrix fragilis ArchiMer
Muths, D.; Jollivet, D.; Gentil, F.; Davoult, D..
The brittle star Ophiothrix fragilis (Abilgaard, 1789) constitutes a heterogeneous morphological group that can be subdivided into 4 varieties. The species is also characterized by high demographic variability. The present study explores the possibility of genetic patchiness arising due to admixture of varieties or recruitment heterogeneity. We sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene and genotyped 7 allozymes from 21 populations of the 2 most common varieties. While mtCOI analyses showed that all the varieties grouped together with virtually no divergence among them (< 1%), a clear divergence (18.6%) was evident between the northern Atlantic populations and individuals collected in the Mediterranean and along...

Mitochondrial patterns of intra- and interspecific differentiation among endemic freshwater crabs of ancient lakes in Sulawesi Naturalis
Schubart, C.D.; Santl, T.; Koller, P..
Due to their long-term ecological stability, ancient lakes represent very interesting systems for studying differentiation and speciation processes. High degrees of endemism and specialisation are characteristic features of their fauna. The Malili lakes from the Indonesian island Sulawesi are considered an ancient limnic system, and recent research has increased the number of recognized species and the knowledge about ecological and morphological diversification within a variety of animal taxa. Here we show that the local endemic gecarcinucid freshwater crabs are more differentiated than qualitative morphological characters and the current taxonomy may indicate. The morphologically and ecologically well characterised species Nautilothelphusa zimmeri Balss,...

Potencial plástico de Cabralea canjerana subsp. polytricha (Adr. Juss.) Penn.

Agronomic evaluation of Paspalum notatum Flügge under the influence of photoperiod R. Bras. Zootec.
Machado,Juliana Medianeira; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Motta,Eder Alexandre Minski da; Pereira,Emerson André; Simioni,Carine; Weiler,Roberto Luis; Zuñeda,Marcos Perera; Ferreira,Priscila Becker.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of photoperiod on the forage yield by ecotypes and intraspecific hybrids of P. notatum. Tetraploid ecotypes from the United States Department of Agriculture and the National University of the Northeast in Argentina, in addition to six intraspecific hybrids, totaling 19 ecotypes, were assessed. The materials evaluated were subjected to an extended photoperiod (14 h of light) and natural photoperiod from July 2011 to October 2012. The experimental design was a completely randomized factorial scheme of 19 × 2 (ecotypes × photoperiod) consisting of five replicates. The materials were influenced differentially by the variation in photoperiod, with one group showing high sensitivity, whereas...

Morphological and growth responses to water stress of two sub-populations of Bromus pictus from soils with contrasting water availability RChHN
ROTUNDO,JOSÉ L; CIPRIOTTI,PABLO A; GUNDEL,PEDRO E.
We studied morphological and growth responses to drought of two sub-populations of Bromus pictus from communities with soils with different water availability from the Patagonian steppe. After a process of acclimatization common to both sub-populations, individuals from both sub-populations were subjected to three levels of water availability during 44 days. Independently of the water availability treatment, the sub-population from the community of high soil water availability showed higher aboveground relative growth rate (RGR) and higher leaf size (area and weight) compared to the sub-population from the community of low soil water availability. These results prove the expected evolution of higher growth rates and leaf sizes in resource rich...

Populational approach in ecophysiological studies: the case of Plathymenia reticulata, a tree from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Lemos Filho,José Pires de; Goulart,Maíra Figueiredo; Lovato,Maria Bernadete.
The variability of ecophysiological traits among populations can be a result of selection in response to environmental pressure and/or due to random factors, like the genetic drift. The analysis of both genetic and phenotypic variation within populations can lead to better understanding of adaptation in order to colonize different habitats. In the last years we have developed several studies with an widely ecogeographic distributed legume tree species, Plathymenia reticulata, which were focused on identifying specific morphological and physiological traits related to adaptation to the habitats of origin of each studied population. We studied populations from Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and ecotonal sites in relation to phenology, seed morphological traits and...
