Changes in plant community diversity and composition across an edge between Araucaria forest and pasture in South Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Fontoura,Simone Benedet; Ganade,Gislene; Larocca,João.
This work investigated how richness, abundance, composition and structure of woody and herbaceous vegetation were altered by the proximity of an edge between Araucaria forest and pasture in South Brazil. Herbaceous and woody species including seedlings were surveyed in 42 plots of 5 × 5 m randomly placed at the following distances: 5 and 50 m from the edge into the pasture and 0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 m from the edge into the forest. There was a significant increase in vegetation cover, richness and abundance of woody species, woody seedlings and herbaceous plants at the edge (0 m). These variables, in general, decreased from 25 to 50 m from the edge into the forest in comparison to the forest interior. Few seedlings of woody plants were able to establish...

Arthropod responses to the experimental isolation of Amazonian forest fragments Rev. Bras. Zool.
Vasconcelos,Heraldo L.; Bruna,Emilio M..
Arthropods are the most diverse and abundant group of animals found in tropical lowland forests, and in light of ongoing global change phenomena, it is essential to better understand their responses to anthropogenic disturbances. Here we present a review of arthropod responses to forest deforestation and fragmentation based on studies conducted at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP), located in central Amazonia. These studies involved a wide range of arthropod groups. All but one of the studies evaluated changes in total species number or species density in relation to fragment size, (i.e. area effects), and one-third also evaluated edge effects. Our review indicates that almost every arthropod group studied showed some kind of...

Distribution of frogs in riparian areas of an urban forest fragment in Central Amazonia Biota Neotropica
Tsuji-Nishikido,Bruno Minoru; Menin,Marcelo.
This study aimed to evaluate how environmental variables (width of valley, stream size, forest edge distance, and leaf-litter depth) affect the abundance and richness of species of frog species in riparian areas of an urban forest fragment in Central Amazonia. The study was conducted at the campus of the Universidade Federal do Amazonas, Manaus, Brazil, between May 2008 and April 2009, when three nocturnal and diurnal samples were taken from ten plots. A total of 17 species belonging to seven families were registered. The number of species recorded per plot varied from seven to 14. We detected a relationship between the edge distance and richness: the plots with lower richness were located near the fragment border. The variables had no significant effect...

Influence of linear habitats in mammal activity: test of the travel lanes hypothesis BJB
COELHO,L. H. L..
Mammal activity was monitored by a track-analysis method, in a 180 ha forest fragment. Three 1 km transects, each one with six tracking stations were established: one along a road side and one along a stream bank ("travel lanes") and one in the forest interior. Transects were monitored for six weeks through the months of September, October and beginning of November 1996. The activity of six morph-species of mammals was accessed, providing 251 records. Results of linear and non-linear habitats were compared, to test the "travel lanes" hypothesis, which predicts higher mammal activity in linear habitats. No statistical evidence supporting the hypothesis was found. The roadside transect showed the lowest mammal activity, whereas the stream side transect...

Migration of coccinellids to alfalfa fields with varying adjacent vegetation in Central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grez,Audrey A; Torres,Constanza; Zaviezo,Tania; Lavandero,Blas; Ramírez,Marcelo.
Permanent and permeable edges, where natural enemies can feed, overwinter or easily cross over, should enhance the early arrival of these predators to crops. We evaluated the abundance and species richness of coccinellids migrating to alfalfa fields adjacent to Eucalyptus, a mix of false acacia, blackberries and poplar (F-B-P), vineyards, corn and annual vegetables. From September 2007 to May 2008, we captured coccinellids in three sticky traps (2.64 m²) placed at the borders between alfalfa fields and adjacent vegetation. We also estimated the abundance of aphid populations in the alfalfa fields, by counting the number of individuals per alfalfa stem in spring, summer and autumn. We collected 90,396 coccinellids from 14 species. Neither total abundance...
