RAMA The Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction ArchiMer
Mcphaden, M. J.; Meyers, G.; Ando, K.; Masumoto, Y.; Murty, V. S. N.; Ravichandran, M.; Syamsudin, F.; Vialard, Jerome; Yu, L.; Yu, W..
The Indian Ocean is unique among the three tropical ocean basins in that it is blocked at 25 degrees N by the Asian landmass. Seasonal heating and cooling of the land sets the stage for dramatic monsoon wind reversals, strong ocean atmosphere interactions, and intense seasonal rains over the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Australia. Recurrence of these monsoon rains is critical to agricultural production that supports a third of the world's population. The Indian Ocean also remotely influences the evolution of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), North American weather, and hurricane activity. Despite its importance in the regional and global climate system though, the Indian Ocean is the most...

Characteristics of the convergence zone at the eastern edge of the Pacific warm pool ArchiMer
Maes, Christophe; Picaut, Joël; Kuroda, Yoshifumi; Ando, Kentaro.
The characteristics of the convergence zone at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool are studied using a compilation of in-situ current and salinity measurements during the period 1992-2001. The displacement of the convergence zone is observed, for the first time, as far west as 140degreesE in the far western Pacific, mainly during La Nina periods, and near 140degreesW in the central Pacific during the 1997-98 El Nino. The convergence zone may be associated with a salinity front dividing the fresh waters of the warm pool from the salty waters upwelled in the central equatorial Pacific. Despite a zonal displacement ranging over about one fifth of the equatorial circumference of the earth, the characteristics of the main parameters involved in...

Seasonal Mixed Layer Heat Balance of the Southwestern Tropical Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Foltz, Gregory R.; Vialard, Jerome; Kumar, B. Praveen; Mcphaden, Michael J..
Sea surface temperature (SST) in the southwestern tropical Indian Ocean exerts a significant influence on global climate through its influence on the Indian summer monsoon and Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation. In this study, measurements from a long-term moored buoy are used in conjunction with satellite, in situ, and atmospheric reanalysis datasets to analyze the seasonal mixed layer heat balance in the thermocline ridge region of the southwestern tropical Indian Ocean. This region is characterized by a shallow mean thermocline (90 m, as measured by the 20 degrees C isotherm) and pronounced seasonal cycles of Ekman pumping and SST (seasonal ranges of -0.1 to 0.6 m day(-1) and 26 degrees-29.5 degrees C, respectively). It is found that surface...

Detection of the Eastern Edge of the Equatorial Pacific Warm Pool Using Satellite-Based Ocean Color Observations ArchiMer
Maes, Christophe; Sudre, Loupe Joeel; Garcon, Veronique.
The analysis of satellite-based ocean color data shows that low concentrations of surface chlorophyll-a (chl-a) found in the equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean varies in phase with the eastern edge of the warm pool. As is true for high sea surface temperatures, the existence and maintenance of these low concentrations are linked to the upper ocean stratification due to salinity. The present study also establishes the quasi permanence of a frontal zone in chlorophyll-a separating the regimes of the western region and the eastern-central cold tongue and, through the identification of this front in satellite-based ocean color data, it provides, for the first time, a reliable method for locating the eastern edge of the warm pool from surface observations...

On the ocean salinity stratification observed at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool ArchiMer
Maes, Christophe.
The observations collected during a series of three oceanographic cruises dedicated to the study of the frontal zone at the eastern edge of the equatorial Pacific warm pool are used to study the role of salinity in the static stratification of the ocean upper layers. By combining physical and biogeochemical data, the position of the frontal zone at the surface could be accurately determined between 157.5 degrees E and 173.4 degrees E. A multiparameter approach is required due to the uncertainty that may result when one parameter is only considered. In the subsurface the thermohaline structures around the frontal zone reveal the predominant role of the ocean salinity stratification within the isothermal layers. However, the actual methods to determine the...
