The diatom genus Thalassiosira (Bacillariophyta) in the estuaries of the Schelde (Belgium-The Netherlands) and the Elbe (Germany) OMA
Muylaert, K.; Sabbe, K..
A taxonomic and ecological study of the phytoplankton of the estuaries of the Schelde (Belgium-The Netherlands) and the Elbe (Germany) revealed the presence of numerous species belonging to the diatom genus Thalassiosira. Its representatives were a dominant component of the phytoplankton spring bloom in these estuaries. A total of 13 species were identified. All of these were present in the Schelde, while only ten were found in the Elbe. Seven and five species respectively had previously not been reported from the Schelde and Elbe. A detailed light and electron microscopical description of these species is given. Most species had their distributional optimum in the polyhaline reaches of the estuaries. Community structure in these...

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid Neomysis integer in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid Neomysis integerin the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. N. integer was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 Eurytemora affinis...
