The Buffy-fronted Seedeater Sporophila frontalis (Verreaux, 1869) is frequently found foraging on seeds during ephemeral masting events of bamboos in the Atlantic forest. In the present study, we analyzed the predation activity of S. frontalis on seeds of Merostachys neesii Rupr. during a masting event in an Atlantic forest reserve on southeastern Brazil. We conducted point counts in spots with M. neesii and in spots without bamboos along trails to determine the presence of S. frontalis on M. neesii clumps. Additionally, focal observations on bamboo clumps and seed traps were used to verify the predatory impact of S. frontalis on M. neesii seeds. I studied the existence of sentinels in Saltator atricollis in a 'campo-cerrado' (Brazilian savanna) during the breeding seasons of 1994-95 and 1995-96. Groups of this species consisted of two to seven birds (N = 25). Sentinels were present (mean ± sd) 62% ± 9% of the time, and most sentinel bouts lasted from less than one to six minutes (although in some occasions for more than 30 min.). Overlap of two or more sentinels occurred on average only 3.2% of the time with birds on guard. Sentinels commonly gave contact calls in the beginning and/or at the end of a sentinel bout. En este estudio se describe la nidificación de cinco especies de Emberizidae y Fringillidae en la Reserva de Ñacuñán, situada en el desierto del Monte central. El periodo de puesta comenzó en octubre o principios de noviembre y continuó hasta diciembre o enero. En Diuca diuca y, de forma menos clara, en Saltatricula multicolor, la fecha promedio de puesta tendió a ser más tardía en la temporada lluviosa de 1997-1998. Todas las especies construyeron nidos abiertos de tipo taza, aunque Diuca diuca utilizó nidos viejos de otras aves (principalmente de especies de Furnariidae) cuando nidificó en ambientes naturales, mientras que los nidos abiertos se observaron únicamente junto a la estación biológica de la reserva.
