Orbicules diversity in Oxalis species from the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) Biocell
Rosenfeldt,Sonia; Galati,Beatriz Gloria.
Eleven Oxalis L. species from the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) were investigated with scanning and transmission electron microscopes. We identified four different types and two subtypes of orbicules. We conclude that the close morphological similarity between these species is also reflected in their orbicules, and we suggest that the orbicules morphology may be a useful character in systematic studies.

Use of Clinical Cases in a Virtual Learning Environment as an Approach to Teaching Human Embryology International Journal of Morphology
Ginani,Fernanda; Gadelha Vasconcelos,Rodrigo; Galvão Barboza,Carlos Augusto.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual learning as an approach to teaching human embryology. For this purpose, clinical cases comprising the six major topics of human embryology were organized into a blog in order to complement the content discussed in the classroom. Scientific articles were made available to reinforce theoretical contents and ethical-humanistic issues were addressed in discussion forums. The mean grades of the students at the end of the semester were compared with those of the previous semester when the method had not been applied. Student perceptions of blog effectiveness were evaluated using an electronic questionnaire. A substantial increase in mean grades was observed compared to the previous class....

The Plantar Aponeurosis in Fetuses and Adults: An Aponeurosis or Fascia? International Journal of Morphology
Kalicharan,A; Pillay,P; Rennie,C.O; De Gama,B.Z; Satyapal,K.S.
The plantar aponeurosis (PA), which is a thickened layer of deep fascia located on the plantar surface of the foot, is comprised of three parts. There are differing opinions on its nomenclature since various authors use the terms PA and plantar fascia (PF) interchangeably. In addition, the variable classifications of its parts has led to confusion. In order to assess the nature of the PA, this study documented its morphology. Furthermore, a pilot histological analysis was conducted to examine whether the structure is an aponeurosis or fascia. This study comprised of a morphological analysis of the three parts of the PA by micro- and macro-dissection of 50 fetal and 50 adult cadaveric feet, respectively (total n=100). Furthermore, a pilot histological...

Recently, the curriculum and the educational methodologies associated with health sciences courses are being reviewed and adapted. Pre-clinical sciences, such as anatomy and embryology are as well subjected to those changes. In human embryology courses it is common to use models to represent the different phases of development to facilitate learning, since the students can see and touch the models, obtaining knowledge by analogies. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if the construction of models by the students during practical embryology classes would improve or facilitate their learning. One year after the classes, 60 students answered a questionnaire with nine objective questions, including spaces for suggestions and observations. The...

Variable Morphology of the Hyoid Bone in Anatolian Population: Clinical Implications - A Cadaveric Study International Journal of Morphology
Kopuz,Cem; Ortug,Gürsel.
The variations of the hyoid bone has a great significance for surgical procedures of neck region, and in forensic medicine for evidence of strangulation or hanging, which causes fractures. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological and morphometrical variations of the hyoid bone in Anatolian population. A total of 60 adult larynx specimens (46 male, 14 female) were dissected to identify morphological and morphometrical variations of hyoid. The infrahyoid muscles and thyrohyoid membrane were cut and ligamentous structures of bone were removed. The variations of shape of the hyoid were classified into six types: A (U-shaped) hyoid bone observed in 31.7 % (19 bones), a horseshoe-H-type in 10 % (6 bones), a B-type hyoid in 31.7 % (19 bones), a...

Origin and Development of the Coronary Arteries International Journal of Morphology
Silva-Junior,Geraldo de Oliveira; Miranda,Sandro Wilson da Silva; Mandarim-de-Lacerda,Carlos Alberto.
The formation of the coronary vasculature is a fundamental event in heart development and involves a series of carefully regulated temporal events that include vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. This review focuses the knowledge concerning the formation of the coronary arteries available so far and some molecular mechanisms involved in this process. Understanding coronary embryogenesis is important for interventions regarding adult cardiovascular diseases as well as those necessary to correct heart congenital defects. The insight of the coronary artery development as a result of ingrowth changed the understanding of several congenital coronary artery variations and anomalies described in gross anatomy.

Female gametophyte development in Adesmia latifolia (Spreng.) Vog. (Leguminosae - Papilionoideae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Moço,Maria C.C.; Mariath,Jorge E.A..
The female gametophyte has a monosporic origin and a Polygonum type development. The female gametophyte growth consumes a large part of the neighboring nucellar cells and, in the micropylar region, part of the nucellar epidermis and internal integument. The mature gametophyte is composed of only four cells due to the ephemeral characteristic of the antipodals. The synergids are pear-shaped cells with the formation of filiform apparatus. Their nuclei lie in the micropylar region and large vacuoles in the chalazal region, while the egg cell presents an opposite polarization. The central cell accumulates starch grains and the two polar nuclei approach the egg. Occasional development of two gametophytes was recorded. The closest to the micropyle develops...

Ovule ontogenesis and megasporogenesis in Adesmia latifolia (Spreng.) Vog. (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Moço,Maria C.C.; Mariath,Jorge E.A..
The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis events were studied under bright field, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. The primordium is 3-zonate and gives rise to a hemianatropous, bitegmic and crassinucellate ovule. The archesporium may consist of one or more archesporial cells, but only one undergoes meiosis, forming a linear tetrad. Normally, only a single megaspore is functional in the chalazal position, but occasionally two functional chalazal megaspores arise. The present study provides additional information on embryological characters in the Adesmieae tribe and discusses their taxonomic significance to the Leguminosae family.

Pinheiro,Marcelo A.A.; Hattori,Gustavo Yomar.
Ovigerous females of Arenaeus cribrarius were collected at Ubatuba, São Paulo, and maintaining in aquaria under controlled temperature (25±1ºC), salinity (35±1‰) and photoperiod (12:12). A small sample of eggs was collected for each 24h, for morphological description, chromatic changes and biometric analysis throughout the embryonic development. Eight egg stages were photographed and had their small and large diameters measured under a microscope provided with camera lucida. The egg's shape was low elliptical during all the embryogenesis and showed size increase (24.4%) and volume (91.1 %), when the last stage were compared with the first one. According to mean egg diameter and volume, the eggs should be pooled in three different groups (1-3; 4-6; 7-8)...
