Sampling frequency to estimate cumulative nitrous oxide emissions from the soil PAB
Nascimento,Alexandre Ferreira do; Rodrigues,Renato de Aragão Ribeiro.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the influence of gas sampling frequency on the cumulative emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the soil. Gas emissions were assessed over a period of two years (2014-2016), in four systems: eucalyptus forestry, crops, pasture, and native forest. The cumulative emissions of N2O were calculated at sampling intervals of 7, 14, and 21 days. The sampling intervals did not influence the final results of cumulative N2O emissions from the soil in the assessed systems.

Methane emission factor of open deposits used to store swine slurry in Southern Brazil PAB
Sardá,Luana Goulart; Higarashi,Martha Mayumi; Nicoloso,Rodrigo da Silveira; Oliveira,Paulo Armando Victória de; Falkoski,Camila; Ribeiro,Stephanie Mayara Siega; Coldebella,Arlei.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to contribute to the establishment of a baseline for the methane emission factor for the management of swine manure, considering the current practice of raw manure storage in two open deposits in parallel, in Southern Brazil. Methane (CH4) emissions were continuously measured in three PVC tanks of 3 m3, during 180 days, in the summer. As the content of volatile solids of pig slurry ran out in approximately 130 days, the CH4 emission factor was calculated as B0= 0.48 m3kg-1VS. Although this value is higher than the B0 estimated by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for Latin America (0.29 m3 kg-1 VS), it is in agreement with the B0 estimated for developed countries (0.45 and 0.48 m3 kg-1 VS, for the US and EU,...

Sheep Excreta as Source of Nitrous Oxide in Ryegrass Pasture in Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo

ABSTRACT Livestock urine and dung are important components of the N cycle in pastures, but little information on its effect on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is available. We conducted a short-term (39-day) trial to quantify the direct N2O-N emissions from sheep excreta on an experimental area of ryegrass pasture growing on a Typic Paleudult in southern Brazil. Four rates of urine-N (161, 242, 323, and 403 kg ha-1 N) and one of dung-N (13 kg ha-1 N) were applied, as well as a control plot receiving no excreta. The N2O-N emission factor (EF = % of added N released as N2O-N) for urine and dung was calculated, taking into account the N2O fluxes in the field, over a period of 39 days. The EF value of the urine and dung was used to estimate the emissions of...

Ammonia emissions from a naturally and a mechanically ventilated broiler house in Brazil AGRIAMBI
Mendes,Luciano B.; Tinoco,Ilda F. F.; Ogink,Nico W. M.; Rocha,Keller S. O.; Osorio S.,Jairo A.; Santos,Marilú S..
This study was conducted with the aim of monitoring NH3 emissions from a mechanically and a naturally ventilated broiler house (MVB and NVB, respectively) and calculate their ammonia emission factors (fNH3). Bird stocking density was 13.5 and 11.1 birds m-2 for the MVB and NVB, respectively. The marketing age was 43 days and bedding consisted of dried coffee husks in its first time of use. Ventilation rates were calculated with the metabolic carbon dioxide mass balance method. Values of fNH3 were 0.32 ± 0.10 and 0.27 ± 0.07 g bird-1 d-1 for the MVB and NVB, respectively, and are in agreement to what was presented in other studies performed under similar conditions. The fNH3 estimated on yearly basis was 58 g bird-place-1 year-1. It was concluded that the...

Dynamic estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from bovine livestock of Valle del Cauca, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Molina Benavides,Raúl Andrés; Sánchez Guerrero,Hugo; Campos Gaona,Rómulo; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Morales,Juan David.
Abstract The contribution of Colombia to global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is low (0.37%); from this percentage, 38% is attributed to agriculture. There are few studies on GHGs emissions at the regional level for agriculture. Therefore, the aim of this research is to estimate dynamically GHG and carbon footprint produced by cattle in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. GHG estimates were established as follows: Tier II of IPCC methodology (2006), and population trends, which were simulated using dynamic system. According to the departmental livestock inventory in recent years (2009-2015), average emissions were 673 million of CO2eq. year-1, with emissions intensity (EI) of 5.58 kgCO2eq.kg.milk-1 and 3.54 kgCO2eq.kgmeat-1. Simulating the...

Effect of Nitrogen Inhibitors on Nitrous Oxide Emissions and Pasture Growth After an Autumn Application in Volcanic Soil Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Vistoso,Erika; Alfaro,Marta; Saggar,Surinder; Salazar,Francisco.
A range of technologies is available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems. Among these, applying N transformation inhibitors is promising in reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in both arable and pastoral soils. A randomized complete block design with six replicates was used to quantify the effect of urease (UI) and nitrification (NI) inhibitors on N2O emissions and pasture production from permanent pasture in an Andisol after autumn-applied urea. The N2O emissions were measured periodically for 8 wk with PVC stationary chambers. Mineral N, DM yield, N concentration, and N uptake were analyzed. Our results show that adding fertilizer (40 kg N ha-1) significantly increased N2O emissions by 281% over the control treatment (P <...
