The use of lipid emulsions as carriers for essential fatty acids in bivalves: a test case with juvenile Placopecten magellanicus OMA
Coutteau, P.; Castell, J.D.; Ackman, R.G.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although information on bivalve nutrition is still very scarce, several studies have demonstrated the importance of lipids, in particular triglycerides, as a source of energy and essential fatty acids in the early life stages. Experimental diets used so far to study bivalve nutrition either heavily pollute the water or are too complex to prepare in a hatchery. The potential use of lipid emulsions as off-the-shelf supplements was evaluated through the analytical verification of the ingestion and incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) by the juvenile sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus fed lipid emulsions of different fatty acid composition as a supplement to Isochrysis sp. (clone T-Iso). The average...

Lipolysis of emulsion models of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins is altered in male patients with abdominal aorta aneurysm BJMBR
Hosni,J.J.; Vinagre,C.G.; Mady,C.; Maranhão,R.C..
Disorders of the lipid metabolism may play a role in the genesis of abdominal aorta aneurysm. The present study examined the intravascular catabolism of chylomicrons, the lipoproteins that carry the dietary lipids absorbed by the intestine in the circulation in patients with abdominal aorta aneurysm. Thirteen male patients (72 ± 5 years) with abdominal aorta aneurysm with normal plasma lipid profile and 13 healthy male control subjects (73 ± 5 years) participated in the study. The method of chylomicron-like emulsions was used to evaluate this metabolism. The emulsion labeled with 14C-cholesteryl oleate and ³H-triolein was injected intravenously in both groups. Blood samples were taken at regular intervals over 60 min to determine the decay curves. The...

Optimization of cosmetic formulations development using Box-Behnken design with response surface methodology: physical, sensory and moisturizing properties BJPS
Mercurio,Daiane Garcia; Calixto,Lívia Salomão; Campos,Patrícia Maria Berardo Gonçalves Maia.
Considering the importance of an adequate composition of the formulation in the development of stable, safe and effective cosmetic products, experimental design techniques are tools that can optimize the formulation development process. The objective of this study was to develop topical formulations using the Box-Behnken design with response surface methodology and evaluate its physical, sensory and moisturizing properties. The experimental design used in the first step allowed to identify and to quantify the influence of raw materials, as well as the interaction between them. In the second step, the analysis identified the influence of soy lecithin, the phytantriol and capric acid triglyceride and caprylic on the consistency index, stickiness and...
