Reinstatement of Nepenthes hemsleyana (Nepenthaceae), an endemic pitcher plant from Borneo, with a discussion of associated Nepenthes taxa Naturalis
Scharmann, M.; Grafe, T.U..
Recently, N. baramensis and N. rafflesiana var. subglandulosa were described from Borneo as new taxa closely related to N. rafflesiana. However, comparison of new collections made in Borneo with N. baramensis and N. rafflesiana var. subglandulosa indicated a synonymy. Furthermore, they were identical to N. hemsleyana, an older taxon formerly treated as synonym of N. rafflesiana. Acknowledging the taxonomic differences to N. rafflesiana, the name N. hemsleyana is reinstated following the priority rule. New evidence is presented that strengthens the interpretation to split N. rafflesiana and N. hemsleyana.

Trichomycterus maracaya, a new catfish from the upper rio Paraná, southeastern Brazil (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae), with notes on the T. brasiliensis species-complex Neotropical Ichthyology
Bockmann,Flávio A.; Sazima,Ivan.
Trichomycterus maracaya, a new species of Trichomycteridae, is described from a streamlet in the upper rio Paraná, Poços de Caldas, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The following putative autapomorphies distinguishes T. maracaya from congeneric species: 1) row of lateral blotches not forming a stripe at any phase during ontogeny; 2) superficial layer of pigmentation of juveniles and large (presumably adults) specimens consisting solely of scattered chromatophores. Furthermore, the new species is characterized by a combination of yellow ground color in life and mottled pattern formed by small to medium-sized, brown, irregularly-coalescent, well-defined deeper-lying blotches, and more superficial dots on the body. Trichomycterus maracaya is...

New Myloplus from Essequibo River basin, Guyana, with discussion on the taxonomic status of Myleus pacu (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Marcelo C.; López-Fernández,Hernán; Liverpool,Elford A..
ABSTRACT A new species in the serrasalmid genus Myloplus is described from the middle Mazaruni River, Essequibo River basin, Guyana. The new species is similar to Myleus pacu and Myloplus planquettei in its silver to purplish black coloration and its overall morphology, and has a putative syntopic distribution with those species. The new species is, however, readily distinguishable from the other two by meristic counts of the unpaired fins and by differences in color pattern, primarily in males. Additionally, we provide comments on Myleus pacu and other species that have been confounded under that name.

Larviculture of two neotropical species with different distributions in the water column in light- and dark-colored tanks Neotropical Ichthyology
Pedreira,Marcelo Mattos; Sampaio,Edson Vieira; Santos,José Cláudio Epaminondas dos; Pires,Aldrin Vieira.
The influence of tank color on the visual perception of fish larvae and the success of their cultivation depends on the characteristics of each species combined with environmental factors. In this study, we determined the effect of light and dark tank colors on the larviculture of pacamã (Lophiosilurusalexandri), a species with a benthonic habit, and curimatá-pioa (Prochilodus costatus), which swims actively in the water column. Larvae of pacamã and curimatá-pioa were cultivated for 10 days in 5-L tanks, at a density of 15 larvae L-1 and luminosity of 141.7 ± 8.95 lux, and fed Artemia nauplii. Four tank colors were used: green, light blue, brown, and black (with four replications). Survival, biomass and Fulton's condition factor for pacamã larvae were...

Revision of genus Steindachneridion (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Garavello,Julio Cesar.
After several years collecting in the type-localities and studying representative samples of genus Steindachneridion Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1919 from Brazilian and foreign museums, a taxonomic revision of the Recent species of the genus is presented, including the description of a new species from the rio Iguaçu, above the great falls. Steindachneridion species are large sized fishes, reaching 1000 mm total length or more, and sharing some anatomical characters that, at least tentatively, support the monophyly of the genus. In addition to the general features found in the Pimelodidae, the species S. amblyurum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888), S. parahybae (Steindachner, 1877), S. doceanum (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889), S. scriptum...

Chloroquine resistance status a decade after : Re-emergence of sensitive Plasmodium falciparum strains in malaria endemic and epidemic areas in Kenya OAK
Wangai, L.N; Kimani, F.T; Omar, S.A; Karanja, S.M; Nderu, D.W; Magoma, G; Mutua, D.
Development and spread of chloroquine (CQ) resistance led to its withdrawal in most malaria endemic countries. In Kenya, this occurred in 1998 when clinical efficacy dropped below 50%. Less than a decade after CQ was removed from routine use in Malawi, the drug has reversed to activity and is again effective for first-line treatment of uncomplicated malaria. There is a probability of a similar reversed activity in Kenya for more 10 years of its absence in uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria treatment. The present study was aimed at establishing the CQ resistance status in the country, 10 years after its withdrawal, by looking at high malaria transmission zone, Mbita, a malaria endemic area and some malaria epidemic areas of the Kenyan highlands....

Redescription of Mimon koepckeae (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Hurtado,Natalí; Arias,Edith; Pacheco,Víctor.
Mimon koepckeae Gardner & Patton, 1972 is a poorly-known bat species, with only three known specimens, including the holotype. Its distribution is restricted to the type locality in Ayacucho Department, Peru, and surroundings. This species has been synonymized with M. crenulatum by some authors. Based on a new specimen of M. koepckeae collected from Santuario Nacional Pampa Hermosa, Junin Department, Peru, we provide an extensive morphological comparison with M. crenulatum (Geoffroy St.-Hilaire, 1803), Mimom bennettii (Gray, 1838), and Mimon cozumelae Goldman, 1914, concluding that M. koepckeae is a valid species. As a result the distribution range of the species is extended 160 km north of the type locality. In addition, we characterize the...

Nests, Eggs, and Nestlings of the Restinga Antwren Formicivora littoralis (Aves: Thamnophilidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
CHAVES,FLAVIA G.; VECCHI,MAURICIO B.; LAURINDO,THIAGO F.S.; ALVES,MARIA ALICE S..
We describe the nest, eggs, and nestlings of the Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis), an endangered bird of Restinga ecosystem (sandy coastal plain vegetation) that is endemic to Rio de Janeiro state. Twelve nests were found at the edges of trails or natural gaps at Massambaba Restinga region, in different supporting plants and heights from the ground (X ± SD 1.27 ± 0.97 m, range 0.27 to 3.45 m). Nests were cup-shaped and were in horizontal forks attached to branches at three to five points with whitish, soft, and thin cotton-like vegetable fiber. The nests' cup shape and measurements were similar to congeneric species, but nest material was different. Eggs were white with brown spots concentrated on the large end or around the middle, giving the...

Triplefin fishes from the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Rojas-Vélez,Stephania; Beltrán-León,Beatriz Susana; Tavera,José.
ABSTRACT The fishes of the family Tripterygidae are commonly known as triplefins because its dorsal fin is divided into three segments. Of the 183 species recognized as valid only 16 are distributed in the eastern Pacific. Two endemic species and only members of the family are found in the FFS Malpelo Island: Axoclinus rubinoffi y Lepidonectes bimaculatus. In this work, additional data are provided on the adults and larvae of the triplefins of the sanctuary. The mean abundances of the larvae were 1,88 individuals/m2 for A. rubinoffi and 0.25 individuals/m2 for L. bimaculatus at the night stations where they were collected, 0.8 and 1.61 km to the west of the island and very close specifically on El Arrecife and La Nevera. The adults were collected around...

Comparative wood anatomy of vegetative organs (stem and rhizome) of Sophora linearifolia (Sophoreae, Papilionoideae, Leguminosae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Pujana,Roberto R; Burrieza,Hernán P; Silva,Mariana P; Tourn,Graciela M; Castro,María A.
Wood anatomy of stem and rhizome of Sophora linearifolia, a rhizomatous plant endemic to centre Argentina, is described. Structural description of thin sections and macerations includes microphotographs of optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant anatomical differences exist between secondary xylem of aerial orthotropic shoots and underground rhizome. Both organs have absent to indistinct growth ring boundaries, simple perforation plates, alternate and vestured intervessel pits and disjunctive parenchyma cell walls. However, stems have smaller vessels, longer fibres, partial storying (vessel elements and axial parenchyma) and narrower rays. Some anatomical characters of the rhizome suggest adaptations to its sinuous pattern of growth. The stem...
