Seed structure and initial development of Byrsonima basiloba Juss. (Malpighiaceae) Gayana Botánica
Dos Santos Silveira,Conceição Eneida; Palhares,Dario; Barros,Karina; Pereira,Damasceno; Gomes Luís,Zanderluce; Rodrigues Pereira,Luiz Alfredo.
ABSTRACT Byrsonima basiloba Juss. is a fast growing shrub that produces edible and juicy fruits. This research studied the morphology and anatomy of seeds and seedlings. The hard endocarp was crested and triloculate, with one seed per locule. B. basiloba seed was composed of a testa and a tegmen with residual endosperm. The embryo was ivory, with long, foliaceous, circinate, anisophyllous cotyledons with disjointed apices. The embryonary axis was short, straight and occupied a small portion of the seed with short epicotyl, and radicle with a rudimentary root cap. In the seedlings, it was possible to differentiate the protoderm, procambium and ground meristem in the elongation zone. The differentiation process in this species occurred early in the embryo....

Endocarp morphology of African Celtis (Celtidaceae/Ulmaceae) Naturalis
Sattarian, A.; Maesen, L.J.G. van der.
Endocarp morphology of 14 species of mainly African Celtis was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Macro- and micro-morphological characters included endocarp shape, colour, size, surrounding rim and SEM examination of the outer layer of the endocarp. Different classes of shape and sculpture were recognised. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on endocarp characters is provided.

Initial development of the endocarp in Lithraea brasiliensis Marchand (Anacardiaceae): with taxonomic notes Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,JOÃO M.S. DE; MARIATH,JORGE E.A..
Investigation into the initial developmental stages of a given structure is fundamental for precise characterization as well as for comparative analysis in relation to other taxa when homologies are established. For the Anacardiaceae family, investigations of the initial development of the pericarp or its basic histological sites, the epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp, are relevant since these regions are of taxonomic and phylogenetic importance. The initial stages of endocarp development in Lithraea brasiliensis were studied using light microscopy. In L. brasiliensis, the fruits are of the drupe type. The endocarp originates exclusively in the epidermis of the locular cavity and is composed of only three strata. The crystalliferous layer, typical in fruits...
