Evaluation of an Active Evaporative Cooling Device for Storage of fruits and Vegetables CIGR Journal
Adekanye, Timothy Adesoye; Babaremu, Kunle Olufemi.
An active evaporative cooling device for storage of fruits and vegetables was developed and evaluated. The cooling device was developed to improve the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. It consists of an inner wall (aluminum of 0.6 mm thickness), external wall (galvanized steel of 1mm thickness), one suction fan, water pump and three trays. The walls were lagged by polyurethane of 25 mm, and three trays. Water distribution network contains two water tanks of 20 litres capacity each, a PVC pipe of 25 mm diameter for conveying water, a 0.5 hp pump for circulating water from the tank to the overhead reservoir and a floated switch for controlling the pump. Water is discharged from the overhead tank through a tap and drains through a jute bag which serves as...

Non-destructive Determination of Bovine Milk Progesterone Concentration during Milking Using Near-infrared Spectroscopy CIGR Journal
Iweka, Patricia; Kawamura, Shuso; Mitani, Tomohiro; Koseki, Shigenobu.
In the current dairy industry, an intensive demand for estrus detection and early diagnosis of pregnancy has been increasing. Progesterone is a steroid hormone that is secreted from corpus luteum into bovine blood and milk, and has a role of maintenance of estrus cycle and pregnancy. Therefore, progesterone concentration in bovine milk is used as an important indicator of estrus detection and early diagnosis of pregnancy. Current method for milk progesterone determination requires a hormone extraction procedure that is time consuming, various types of instruments, reagents management, and various assay methods that are destructive in nature. In contrast, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a time saving and non-destructive analytical method that can be...

Optimization of extraction of deoiled rice bran protein and its utilization in wheat based cookies CIGR Journal
Mann, Gurleen Singh; Bhatia, Surekha; Kaur, Dr. Amarjeet; Alam, Dr. M S.
Deoiled rice bran protein  was extracted using alkali extraction method Optimization of protein extraction by alkali extraction method was done using box-behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM). Yield and protein content of protein concentrate were found to be affected by extraction conditions viz. bran/water ratio, pH and time. pH had most significant effect on yield of protein concentrate followed by time of extraction and bran/water  of extraction solvent. Optimum process variables for extraction of protein concentrate from deoiled rice bran were 0.175 bran/water ratio, 9.5 pH of solution and 45 min of extraction time which gave 8.63% yield of protein concentrate having protein content of 83.75%. Albumin (37.23%), globulin (20.27%) and...

Influence of different moisture content on engineering properties of tamarind seeds CIGR Journal
MOHITE, ASHISH M; Sharma, Neha; Mishra, Anuradha.
Engineering properties of tamarind seeds were evaluated on the basis of different moisture content along with whole and split seeds. Tamarind seeds at a moisture content (8.24% d.b.) were regulated at 5, 10 and 15 % db moisture content. Geometric mean diameter and sphericity values were in the range (8.79 to 9.87) and (0.62 to 0.70) for 5, 10 and 15% moisture content of tamarind seeds. The result of bulk and true density varied as 708 to 688 kg/m3 and 963 to768 kg/m3 ,respectively in the varying range of moisture content. Textural properties such as toughness and hardness showed an increasing trend with an increase in moisture content. The coefficient of static friction was found highest on a plywood surface, then for cast iron sheet and stainless steel....

Synthetic Biology: opportunities for Chilean bioindustry and education Biol. Res.
Federici,Fernán; Rudge,Timothy J; Pollak,Bernardo; Haseloff,Jim; Gutiérrez,Rodrigo A.
In an age of pressing challenges for sustainable production of energy and food, the new field of Synthetic Biology has emerged as a promising approach to engineer biological systems. Synthetic Biology is formulating the design principles to engineer affordable, scalable, predictable and robust functions in biological systems. In addition to efficient transfer of evolved traits from one organism to another, Synthetic Biology offers a new and radical approach to bottom-up engineering of sensors, actuators, dynamical controllers and the biological chassis they are embedded in. Because it abstracts much of the mechanistic details underlying biological component behavior, Synthetic Biology methods and resources can be readily used by interdisciplinary teams to...
