Validation of age determination using otoliths of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Uriarte, A.; Rico, I.; Villamor, B.; Duhamel, Erwan; Duenas, C.; Aldanondo, N.; Cotano, U..
Validation of the age determination procedure using otoliths of European anchovy in the Bay of Biscay was achieved by monitoring very strong year-classes in successive spring catches and surveys, as well as the seasonal occurrence of edge types. Historical corroboration of the ageing method was obtained by cross-correlation between successive age groups by year-classes in catches and surveys (1987–2013). Summary annual growth in length is also presented. Yearly annuli consist of a hyaline zone (either single or composite) and a wide opaque zone, disrupted occasionally by some typical checks (mainly at age-0 and age-1 at peak spawning time). Age determination, given a date of capture, requires knowledge of the typical annual growth pattern of otoliths,...

Relationships between age, growth, diet and environmental parameters for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) in the Bay of Benisaf (SW Mediterranean, west Algerian coast) ArchiMer
Bacha, Mahmoud; Moali, Aissa; Benmansour, Nasr-eddine; Brylinski, Jean-michel; Mahe, Kelig; Amara, Rachid.
Age, growth and diet of anchovy were studied for the first time from samples collected in the Bay of Benisaf (west Algerian coast) during summer (spawning period) and autumn (recruitment period) 2007. Age structure and growth parameters were determined by otolith (sagitta) analyses. The von Bertalanffy growth function fitted to age-length data showed that most of anchovy growth is achieved during the first year of life, suggesting that this stock is primarily supported by the smallest age groups and has a strong dependence on recruitment. There were no significant differences between males and females, and pooled mean parameters were: L infinity = 15.61 cm, k = 0.75 per year and to, -1.32 years. Whatever the age-class anchovy is strictly zooplanktivorous....

Reproductive biology of Cetengraulis edentulus (Cuvier, 1829), the major fishery resource in Guanabara Bay, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Franco,Ana Clara Sampaio; Brotto,Daniel Shimada; Zee,David Man Wai; Santos,Luciano Neves dos.
Cetengraulis edentulus is a broadely distributed engraulid in Southwest Atlantic, currently accounting for the main fish species commercially exploited at Guanabara Bay, Brazil. This study aimed to extend the knowledge on reproduction of C. edentulus at Guanabara Bay and to test whether some descriptors of reproductive activity, especially the gonadosomatic index (GSI), and the index of reproductive activity (IRA) changed among seasons. A total of 978 C. edentulus specimens were retrieved from purse seine commercial landings at Conservas Rubi S.A. company, in São Gonçalo city, RJ. Subsamples of 90-120 individuals were collected from bimonthly yields between July 2010 (winter) and June 2011 (autumn). Most fish were adults (120-170 mm TL), in response to the...

Patrones de utilización de la laguna Mar Chiquita (Buenos Aires, Argentina) y área costera adyacente por parte de los primeros estadios ontogénicos de peces OceanDocs
Bruno, Daniel O..
The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. The richness and mean density of larvae were higher at the offshore area than at the lagoon. Inside the lagoon the dominant species in larval stage was Brevoortia...

Alimentación de la anchoíta argentina (Engraulis anchoita Hubbs y Marini, 1935)(Pisces: Clupeiformes) durante la época reproductiva OceanDocs
Pájaro, M..
Northern and southern populations of Engraulis anchoita spawn during spring and early summer in the coastal and intermediate shelf regions of the Argentine Sea between 34°S-41°S and 41°S-48°S respectively. Samples were obtained in 8 research surveys carried out during the spawning peak of the species. In both populations, more than 70. of the stomachs analyzed were empty or with scarce food. In plankton samples taken copepods predominated in the whole reproductive area. However, densities (41,000 individuals m-2)were lower than those found on the external shelf. Distribution and number of preys observed in the stomach content were associated to the distribution and abundance of plankton organisms. When comparing coastal and shelf regions it was noted that...

Distribuição espacial e temporal de Cetengraulis edentulus (Cuvier) (Actinopterygii, Engraulidae) na Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Silva,Márcio de Araújo; Araújo,Francisco G.; Azevedo,Márcia C. Costa de; Mendonça,Pablo.
Anchovies are members of the Engraulidae family, characterized to present coastal pelagic habits, concentrating in large schoolings distributed among the continental shelf and semi-closed environment, like bays, where they are target of heavy fisheries. The present study aims to describe spatial and temporal distribution of Cetengraulis edentulous (Cuvier, 1828) in the Sepetiba bay (22º54'-23º04'S, 43º34'-44º10'W) and to assess influences of environmental variables on fish occurrence. A monthly sampling programme was carried out between October 1998 and September 1999, to take both, fish and environmental information on temperature, salinity and depth. Three bay zones were established based on spatial gradient of salinity and depth. Adults C. edentulus...

Anchoa tricolor (Agassiz, 1829) is the only anchovy of commercial importance in Sepetiba Bay, supporting an intensive commercial fishery by small sized seine boats provide of hydroacustics sounder detecting device. This study analyses the accompanying fauna in the A. tricolor fishery, and the influence of environmental parameters in fish composition. Seven samples were taken with a seine net between March and September 1999, capturing 114,430 fish, comprising 17 species and 11 families. Engraulidae and Clupeidae were the most abundant families, accounting to 94.2 % of the total number of fish. A. tricolor was the most abundant species contributing to more than one half of the total numerical abundance, followed in decreasing order by Anchoa januaria...

Growth of the Anchovy Anchoa tricolor in a brazilian subtropical estuary Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARVALHO,BARBARA M. DE; FONTOURA,NELSON F.; SPACH,HENRY L..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the growth parameters of Anchoa tricolor in a subtropical estuary. From August 2010 to July 2011, 10.009 specimens of the anchovy Anchoa tricolor, mean total length 4.2 cm (±1.45), were captured in the intertidal region of the Estuarine Complex of Paranaguá (25º 15’ - 25° 35’ S and 48° 20’ - 48° 45’ W). Species´s weight/length relationship for grouped genders was described as follow: W = 0.0000591.Lt3.282 (length in centimeters; weight in grams) showing a positive allometric growth pattern (b>3; P=0.000). Significant differences concerning weight/length relationship for males, females and unsexed individuals were identified. Parameters of the length to age growth curve were estimated by adjusting a von Bertalanffy...
