Entomopathogenic nematodes: potential for exploration and use in South America Neotropical Entomology
GREWAL,PARWINDER S.; NARDO,ELIZABETH A. B. DE; AGUILLERA,MARINEIDE M..
Entomopathogenic nematodes have potential for biological control of insect pests. They are currently used for the control of soil and cryptic pests in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Entomopathogenic nematodes can be easily mass-produced and applied using conventional spray equipment. They have a broad host range and are safe to the environment. Due to the history of success with implementation of biological pest control programs, South American countries have a great opportunity to develop and implement the use of entomopathogenic nematodes. Recent emphasis on fruit and vegetable production in Brazil also stresses a need to implement safer and effective pest control methods. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in...

Analysis of biological parameters of Boophilus microplus Canestrini, 1887 exposed to entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema carpocapsae Santa Rosa and All strains (Steinernema: Rhabditida) BABT
Freitas-Ribeiro,Gláucia Marques; Furlong,John; Vasconcelos,Viviane Oliveira; Dolinski,Cláudia; Loures-Ribeiro,Alan.
Engorged and partially engorged females of Boophilus microplus were exposed to 600; 3,000; 6,000 and 30,000 infective juveniles of Steinernema carpocapsae Weiser, 1955 Santa Rosa and All strains per dish, under lab conditions. Eggs weight, pre-laying period, laying period, survival period, reproductive efficiency rate, percentage of larval eclosion and lethal concentrations of 50% and 90% (CL50 and CL90) were calculated for engorged females. In the case of partially engorged females, only egg weight, survival period and CL50 and CL90 were calculated. All biological parameters of engorged or partially engorged females were altered by exposition of S. carpocapsae infective juveniles (IJs), Santa Rosa and All strains (p<0.05). The increase in the response...

Effects of insect cadavers infected by Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema diaprepesi on Meloidogyne incognita parasitism in pepper and summer squash plants Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Del Valle,Eleodoro E; Lax,Paola; Rondán Dueñas,Juan; Doucet,Marcelo E.
The effects of insect cadavers infected with three isolates of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and one isolate of Steinernema diaprepesi on a population of Meloidogyne incognita in pepper (Capsicum annuum) and summer squash (Cucurbita maxima) were evaluated in greenhouse experiments carried out in Santa Fe (Argentina). Insect cadavers were obtained for the experiments from last instar larvae of Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor that had been infected with entomopathogenic nematodes. Two six-day-old insect cadavers per pot were placed below the soil surface, and the soil was inoculated with 100 second-stage juveniles ofM incognita. Sixty days after inoculation, the following parameters were recorded for each plant: number of leaves; dry weight of...
