Fuzzy modeling in the prediction of climate indices and productive performance of quails kept in climate chamber REA
MARQUES,JORDÂNIO I.; LOPES NETO,JOSÉ P.; LOPES,FERNANDA F. DE M.; FURTADO,DERMEVAL A.; ARAÚJO,TIAGO G. P..
ABSTRACT With the demand in the production at large-scale food, confinement of animals has become a necessity of the productive process because of the increase in production capacity and optimization of the spaces reserved for creations. In this context, the aim of this study was the development and validation of models using fuzzy logic for predicting climate indices and productive performance of European quails kept in a climatic chamber. The model developed was analyzed from two points of view; the first one took into account the prediction of climate indexes where the input variables were the temperature (°C) and relative humidity (%) of the air. In the second, related to the prediction of productive performance, the input variables were air...

New Regulations Governing Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Require New Solutions: Discussion AgEcon
Fleming, Ronald A.; Thomas, Michael H..
This paper discusses the three invited papers presented in the session titled “New Regulations Require New Solutions: Federal Provisions Governing Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations” (i.e., CAFOs). These papers provide an excellent review of current state and federal laws and an excellent summary of what has been and is currently being done with respect to CAFO regulation. The papers present three different policy approaches: i) alternative performance standards, ii) location-specific regulation, and iii) insurance-based underwriting of CAFO discharges. Each approach has its drawbacks; however, blending theses suggested policies into current regulations would result in efficiency gains.

Green Giving: An Analysis of Contributions to Major U.S. Environmental Groups AgEcon
Richer, Jerrell.
Data are compiled from the tax records of 29 major environmental organizations for the period 1980-1994 to identify factors that influence voluntary contributions. I examine the effects of organizational characteristics, such as fundraising expenditures and alternative sources of revenue, along with the impact of general economic conditions and the political climate. I find that government grants to the organizations had a positive and statistically significant impact on voluntary contributions rather than a crowding out effect. Contributions were price inelastic, where the price is defined as the effective cost to the donor of achieving a one-dollar increase in the provision of program services. Resources devoted to fundraising had a strong and positive...

Relationship between Economic Development Level and Environmental Quality in Qinghai Province AgEcon
Zhao, Qinglin; Mao, Wei; Peng, Ying.
Environmental and economic data in the years 1986-2006 in Qinghai Province of China are selected. Based on Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory, models of per capita GDP and four environmental indices are established by SPSS software. Economic development level and environmental quality of Qinghai Province are simulated. Research shows that relationship between economy and environment of Qinghai Province does not completely accord with U-shaped Pattern of EKC. Fitting curve of the emission of industrial wastewater shows positive "U"-type, that of waste gas shows the right half of the U curve, and that of SO2 and solid waste shows a "U + weak inverted U"-shaped curve. Result also indicates that water environment and air pollution of Qinghai Province are...

The Environmental Consequences of Globalization: A Country-Specific Time-Series Analysis AgEcon
Baek, Jungho; Cho, Yongsung; Koo, Won W..
The dynamic relationships among trade, income and the environment for developed and developing countries are examined using a cointegration analysis. Results suggest that trade and income growth tend to increase environmental quality in developed countries, whereas they have detrimental effects on environmental quality in most developing countries. It is also found that for developed countries the causal relationship appears to run from trade and income to the environment - a change in trade and income growth causes a consequent change in environmental quality, and the opposite relationship holds for developing countries.

The Conservation Reserve Program in the Presence of a Working Land Alternative: Implications for Environmental Quality, Program Participation, and Income Transfer AgEcon
Feng, Hongli; Kling, Catherine L.; Kurkalova, Lyubov A.; Secchi, Silvia; Gassman, Philip W..
The United States has invested large sums of resources in multiple conservation programs for agriculture over the past century. In this paper we focus on the impacts of program interactions. Specifically, using an integrated economic and bio-physical modeling framework, we consider the impacts of the presence of working land programs on a land retirement for an important agricultural region—the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB). Compared to a land retirement only program, we find that the presence of a working land program for conservation tillage results in significantly lower predicted signups for land retirement at a given rental rate. We also find that the presence of both a large working land and land retirement program can result in more...

NY Pollution Discharge Elimination Permits for CAFOs, Management Adjustments and the Environment AgEcon
Enahoro, Dolapo K.; Schmit, Todd M.; Boisvert, Richard N..
Weakening demand for livestock and dairy produce, historically high prices for feed ingredients and increasingly strict regulations on animal waste management continue to put significant pressure on livestock and dairy operating margins. In this paper, we use representative farm mathematical programming models to analyze important linkages between farm management adjustments and changes in farm income due to recent changes in relevant agricultural prices and restrictions on land application of nutrients. We account explicitly for new restrictions on land application of nitrogen and phosphorus, and specifically applied to confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Our mathematical methods and the distinctive data available allows for the assessment of...

Impact of High Crop Prices on Environmental Quality: A Case of Iowa and the Conservation Reserve Program AgEcon
Secchi, Silvia; Babcock, Bruce A..
Growing demand for corn due to the expansion of ethanol has increased concerns that environmentally sensitive lands retired from agricultural production into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) will be cropped again. Iowa produces more ethanol than any other state in the United States, and it also produces the most corn. Thus, an examination of the impacts of higher crop prices on CRP land in Iowa can give insight into what we might expect nationally in the years ahead if crop prices remain high. We construct CRP land supply curves for various corn prices and then estimate the environmental impacts of cropping CRP land through the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model. EPIC provides edge-of-field estimates of soil erosion, nutrient loss,...

THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF CROP ROTATION SYSTEMS: EVIDENCE FROM THE LITERATURE AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Berhanu; Schwab, Gerald.
Agricultural sustainability requires that the individual farm firm be competitive and profitable while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the farm firm and agricultural economy depends. The reliance of conventional agriculture systems on purchased inputs external to the firm presents possible challenges to the long-term sustainability of the system. Crop rotation systems are one cropping system alternative that can reduce agriculture's dependence on external inputs through internal nutrient recycling, maintenance of the long-term productivity of the land, and breaking weed and disease cycles. Decision criteria to choose among competing crop rotation systems can include impact on soil quality and...

The Farmers' Plea to Environmentalists AgEcon
Avery, Dennis T..
This paper critically examines linkages between alternative farming practices and environmental quality. Environmental impacts of high-yield farming are contrasted to those of low-yield farming. Traditional low-yield farming systems, while being promoted by environmental groups, have resulted in massive famine, higher cancer rates, soil erosion, and losses in wildlife habitat. Organic farming and other low-yield systems are land intensive and invade marginal farmland, thereby destroying wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Low-yield farming has not and cannot produce enough food to meet the food needs of the world’s population. By contrast, high-yield farming minimizes land use for food production and increase the availability of land for wildlife habitat...

Demand for Urban Forests and Economic Welfare: Evidence from the Southeastern U.S. Cities AgEcon
Zhu, Pengyu; Zhang, Yaoqi.
This study examines the relationship between urban forests and household income and population density in the 149 cities with populations over 40,000 in nine southeastern states. Our empirical results show that urban forest percentage across the cities has characteristics of the environmental Kuznets curve. We find that household income around $39,000 is a threshold that changes the relationship between income and urban forest coverage from negative to positive, whereas the impact of population density on urban forests is just the opposite, from positive to negative when population density is around 180 persons per square kilometer.

Benefits of Protecting Rural Water Quality: An Empirical Analysis AgEcon
Crutchfield, Stephen R.; Feather, Peter; Hellerstein, Daniel.
Concerns about the impact of farm production on the quality of the Nation's drinking and recreational water resources have risen over the past 10 years. Because point sources of pollution were controlled first, agricultural nonpoint sources have become the Nation's largest remaining single water-quality problem. Both public and private costs of policies that address the conflict between agricultural production and water quality are relevant, but measuring the off-farm benefits and costs of changing water quality is difficult. Many of the values placed on these resources are not measured in traditional ways through market prices. This report explores the use of nonmarket valuation methods to estimate the benefits of protecting or improving rural water...

An Econometric Analysis of the Environmental Benefits Provided by the Conservation Reserve Program AgEcon
Fleming, Ronald A..
Over $1.7 billion has been spent on the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) since 1985. The purpose of this study is to show that these expenditures have aided the environment. Rather than quantify changes in environmental variables, a spatial econometric model is used to test if CRP enrollments are greater in counties with poorer environmental quality. In seven of nine regions, CRP enrollments are higher in counties with an environmental concern. This positive finding justifies past expenditures by the CRP and supports continued funding as an environmental program. The CRP is targeting current environmental concerns that will lead to future improvement.

Use of legal reserve areas as geochemical background in hydrosedimentology studies¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Juchen,Carlos Roberto; Vilas Boas,Márcio Antônio; Poleto,Cristiano; Macedo,Maurício.
In hydrosedimentology studies the determination of the trace element concentrations at the study site is imperative, since this background can be used to assess the enrichment of sediments with these elements. This enrichment can be the result of the natural process of geological formation or of anthropogenic activities. In the latter case, guidelines are used to indicate the concentrations at which trace elements cause ecotoxicity effects on the environment. Thus, this study used legal reserve areas in the municipality of Toledo, PR, where natural forests are maintained, with no or minimal human interference to establish background levels. The results of atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled argon plasma showed that the legal reserves have...

The effects of heavy metals on the incidence of morphological deformities in Chironomidae (Diptera) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Deliberalli,Wanessa; Cansian,Rogério L.; Pereira,Albanin A. M.; Loureiro,Rafael C.; Hepp,Luiz U.; Restello,Rozane M..
ABSTRACT Streams in urban areas are strongly impacted by the input of organic matter and metals, for instance copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). These metals are essential for the aquatic biota, but when absorbed in excess they are toxic. In Chiro nomidae larvae, the deleterious effects of heavy metals can be ascertained by analyzing the morphological deformities of the larval mentum, a structure of the oral cavity. In this study, we evaluated I) the bioavailability of Cu and Zn in urban stream sediments and II) the relationship between Cu and Zn concentrations and the incidence of deformities in the mentum of Chironomus larvae. Chironomid flies were collected from four locations in two streams at an urban area in southern Brazil. They were identified and the...
