Environmental Restoration of Invaded Ecosystems: How Much Versus How Often? AgEcon
Ranjan, Ram.
This paper derives the optimal level of restorative efforts required to restore environments degraded by invasive species invasion. Specific attention is focused upon a case when the restoration efforts face the risk of failure through relapse of the restored environment. The level of restored environment may also play a role in its future improvement or susceptibility to failure. The tradeoff between the optimal level of environmental quality and number of restorative efforts required to attain that given environmental quality is analyzed.

Mapping preferences for the restoration of environmental damage caused by illegal dumping AgEcon
Campbell, Danny; Sinclair, Victoria.
In this paper we use a discrete choice experiment to elicit the economic benefits associated with restoring environmental damage caused by illegal dumping activities. Our study focuses on an extensive rural upland area close to Belfast, where illegal dumping activities are prevalent. Using a random parameters logit model to account for unobserved taste heterogeneity, we exploit the panel nature of the dataset to retrieve partworths, or willingness to pay (WTP) values, for every individual in the sample. We subsequently investigate the existence of spatial dependence of these estimates. As a means of benefit transfer, we also employ geostatistical methods to extend across the whole of the study area the WTP estimates derived from the collected data. The...

Attribute processing in environmental choice analysis: implications for willingness to pay AgEcon
Campbell, Danny; Lorimer, Victoria; Aravena, Claudia; Hutchinson, W. George.
Data from a discrete choice experiment is used to investigate the implications of failing to account for attribute processing strategies (APSs). The research was designed to elicit the economic benefits associated with landscape restoration activities that were intended to remediate environmental damage caused by illegal dumping activities. In this paper we accommodate APSs using an equality constrained latent class model. By retrieving the conditional class membership probabilities we recover estimates of the weights that each respondent assigned to each attribute, which we subsequently use ensure unnecessary weight is not allocated to attributes not attended to by respondents. Results from the analysis provide strong evidence that significant gains in...
