A fragment of 466 base pairs from a highly variable peripheral region of the mitochondrial D-loop of horses was amplified and analyzed by single stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP). Fourteen distinct SSCP variants were detected in 100 horses belonging to four breeds (Arabian, ARB; Thoroughbred, TB; Argentinian Creole, ARC; and Peruvian Paso from Argentina, PPA). Each breed showed four to eight SSCP variants, many of which were shared between two or three of the studied breeds. Arabian horses were the most variable (eigth variants), with three variants unique to the breed. PPA and ARC showed two and one characteristic SSCP variants, respectively, while TB shared all its variants with at least one of the other breeds. An analysis based on the... |

In Egypt, there is a growing movement to encourage veterinary student-centered learning using the most up to date educational technologies. This paper focuses on a computer-facilitated learning program "Equine Anatomedia", which comprises now two modules (head and digit) fully integrated with the applied anatomy curriculum at Alexandria and Damanhour Universities. The educational design of this program allows students and clinicians to explore anatomical concepts, principles and procedure guidelines in a manner more suited to their individual learning needs than traditional methods. The program comprises over 300 high quality images and diagrams, audio and video clips as well as animated graphics with colored keys highlighting the anatomical features.... |

The morphological characteristics of the hooves of two groups of horses were studied. The first group was comprised of six adult animals without any treatment and served as the control. The other group, comprised of seven horses, received carbohydrates overload orally. Of these, 71% developed laminitis between 36 and 48 hours after carbohydrate administration. After 48 hours of induction, the animals were sacrificed and their fore limbs and hindlimbs were removed for histologic study. Tissue sections 5 to 7 µm thick were obtained, stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) or periodic acid Schiff's (PAS), and then examined by light microscopy. It was possible to identify in horses from the laminitis group, morphological and structural changes in the... |

In the present study, snakebites caused by a single Bothrops pauloensis simultaneously affecting three male adult horses are described. Whereas the first two affected horses were six years old, the third was 16 years old; they weighed respectively 555, 550 and 500 kg. All horses presented swollen muzzles. The first animal received an initial antivenom dose of 19 vials and adjuvant medication, it was also subjected to tracheostomy due to the progression of acute respiratory failure. The second and third horses respectively received 15 vials of antivenom each, in addition to adjuvant medication. Due to continuous changes in blood coagulation observed during hospitalization, the first and the second horses received five more vials of antivenom, respectively,... |

Fungal placentitis is an infectious disease inducing abortion in pregnant mares. In the present report, we describe a field case of abortion caused by fungal placentitis with consecutive examinations. The progesterone level and combined thickness of the uterus and placenta (CTUP) were abnormal before the onset of clinical signs. Additionally, the estradiol level started to change before the appearance of clinical signs. Abnormal serum amyloid A values and an abnormal fetal heart rate were observed after the onset of clinical signs. The present report demonstrates that the progesterone level and CTUP may be adequate as early diagnostic markers of fungal placentitis and bacterial infection. Endocrinological evaluation based on cutoff values or serial... |

From previous cDNA subtraction studies analyzing gene expression in equine endometrium, high lipocalin 2 (LCN2) mRNA expression was found in the gravid endometrium. In the uterus, LCN2 may transport hydrophobic molecules and siderophores with iron, or may form a complex with another protein, however, the expression of uterine LCN2 beyond day 20 of equine pregnancy and its receptor has not been characterized. To study the expression and potential roles of uterine LCN2 from pre-implantation to mid-gestation period, stage-specific endometrial samples were obtained from day 13 (day 0 = ovulation) cyclic and days 13, 19, 25, and 60 to 131 pregnant mares. Expression of LCN2 mRNA increased in day 19 gravid endometrium and was abundant from day 60 onward. The... |

A 17-year-old, gray Thoroughbred gelding was presented with recurrent epistaxis following exercise for over one year. Multidetector-row computed tomographic (MDCT) examination of the head performed under general anesthesia indicated the presence of malignant melanoma. MDCT examination revealed the exact location and size of masses in the right guttural pouch first identified by endoscopy and in the left guttural pouch unidentified by endoscopy. MDCT examination revealed the presence of a blood clot that filled the right maxillary sinus. The horse was euthanized due to poor prognosis as a riding horse and the owner's decision, and MDCT findings were confirmed by postmortem examination. MDCT is suggested as a useful technique for diagnosis of head problems... |

This study was designed to investigate gastrointestinal dysfunctions, especially the effects of gastrointestinal prokinetic agents on digestive disorders involving lowered motility. The effects of α2-adrenergic agonists for treating acute abdominal disorders involving intestinal torsion in horses were also investigated. The results are as follows: (1) It appeared that the functions of migrating contractions (MC) in horses were to transfer the contents of the digestive tract as soon as possible to the cecum and colon, in addition to maintaining homeostatis in the digestive tract. (2) Motilin was seen to be involved in the regulation mechanism of intestinal motility in the horse as well as in humans and dogs, and brought about MC. (3) The intravenous... |

The effects of mosapride, a 5-hydroxytryptamine 4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist, on the motility of horse small intestine were examined by means of electrointestinography (EIG). Six adult healthy thoroughbreds were used, in which EIG signals from the small intestine were measured by a Degetorappar EGG system. Mosapride, dissolved in 200 ml water, was orally administered at a dose of 2 mg/kg. The total power of EIG signals at a frequency band of 3 cpm was 419.1 ± 122.0 (μV) 2 × cpm (n=6) before, and 2,093.6 ± 850.0 (μV)2 × cpm (n=6) after the drug administration, the latter mean value being significantly greater than the former. This result suggests that mosapride has a prokinetic action on the motility of horse small intestine. |
