| The behavioral patterns of the estuarine dolphin, Sotalia guianensis (P. J. van Bénéden, 1864), were compared between two populations along the Brazilian coast: Caravelas (Bahia), along the eastern coast, and Norte Bay (Santa Catarina), along the southern coast. Applying the focal-group sampling in both areas, information such as the geographic position (UTM) of groups and predominant behavioral patterns were obtained. Geographic positions were used to calculate the total distance traveled by estuarine dolphin groups on each observation day. Since the distance traveled varies with time, the daily mean speed of the dolphins group was used as an index of movement intensity. | Data on Sotalia guianensis Van Bénéden, 1864 occurrence on the beaches of Pernambuco (Northeastern Brazil) is restricted to information on stranding and on printed material from local newspapers; actual observations of such animals have not been published. This study intends to determine the use of habitat, behavioral activities and assess the relationships between environmental factors and the recorded behavior. Observations were conducted on open sea coastal areas, on the beaches of Olinda and Piedade, as well as in sheltered areas, in the ports of Recife and Suape. | Estuarine dolphins, Sotalia guianensis (Van Bénéden, 1864), were identified in Sepetiba Bay (22º35'S, 44º03'W), state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between February 1994 and July 2006 using the photo-identification method. A total of 72 surveys resulted in the identification and cataloguing of 217 individual dolphins. Seventy-nine (36%) were resighted at least once during the study period. The average interval between resightings was 40,6 ± 31,1 months. Large numbers of mother-and-calf pairs were recorded during the 12 years and new individuals were frequently encountered in the photographic records.
