Survey and prevalence of species causing Alternaria leaf spots on brassica species in Pernambuco Horticultura Brasileira
Michereff,Sami J; Noronha,Marissônia A; Xavier Filha,Maria S; Câmara,Marcos PS; Reis,Ailton.
Brassicaceae family comprises plant species that are very important as vegetable crops, such as the species complex Brassica oleracea and Brassica rapa. Alternaria brassicicola and A. brassicae are among the most important pathogens of Brassicaceae causing Alternaria leaf spot disease. The occurrence and prevalence of Alternaria species causing leaf spots in brassica crops in Pernambuco was acessed, as well as the existence of a possible preference by vegetable host for these pathogens. Twenty-eight fields were surveyed in the Agreste region of Pernambuco state, in the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons. In each year, 10 Chinese cabbage, six cabbage, six cauliflower and six broccoli fields were visited. In each field, 50 leaves showing at least five lesions...

New apiaceous hosts of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in the Cerrado region of Brazil Horticultura Brasileira
Reis,A; Nascimento,WM.
This paper reports for the first time in the Cerrado region of Brazil the occurrence of white mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in coriander (Coriandum sativum), parsley (Petroselinum crispum) and Peruvian carrot (Arracacia xanthorrhiza). The disease was observed on coriander, in Cristalina, Goiás State, on parsley in Gama, the Federal District and on Peruvian carrot in Ibiá, Minas Gerais State. Pathogenicity tests demonstrated that the fungus S. sclerotiorum is the causal agent of the observed symptoms in these plants. The three isolates obtained from naturally infected plants were inoculated in coriander (cv. Verdão), parsley (cv. Lisa Gigante), Peruvian carrot (cv. Amarela de Senador Amaral) and carrot (cv. Forto Nantes) and they were pathogenic...

Powdery mildew of Allium species caused by Oidiopsis taurica in Brazil Horticultura Brasileira
Reis,Ailton; Boiteux,Leonardo S.; Paz-Lima,Milton L.; Silva,Patrícia P.; Lopes,Carlos A..
Oidiopsis taurica Salmon (Syn. Oidiopsis sicula Scalia) was identified as the causal agent of a powdery mildew disease occurring on distinct Allium species in Brazil. This disease was initially observed in plastic house and field-grown garlic (Allium sativum) and leek (A. porrum) accessions in Brasília (Federal District) and in field-grown and greenhouse onion (A. cepa) cultivars in Belém do São Francisco (Pernambuco State) and Brasília, respectively. Typical symptoms consisted of chlorotic areas on the leaf surface corresponding to a fungal colony. These lesions turned to a brownish color with the progress of the disease. Fungi morphology was similar to that described for O. taurica. Endophytic mycelium emerging through estomata, light pale conidia were...

Oil palm fatal yellowing (FY), a disease with an elusive causal agent. Infoteca-e
BITTENCOURT, C. B.; LINS, P. de C.; BOARI, A. de J.; QUIRINO, B. F.; TEIXEIRA, W. G.; SOUZA JUNIOR, M. T..
Abstract: Fatal yellowing disease (FY) is a bud rot-type disease that severely affects oil palm plantations in Latin America. Since 1974, when it was first reported in Brazil, this disorder has been responsible for severe economic losses in the oil palm industry; and, for nearly 50 years, several studies have tried to identify its causal agent, without success. The etiological studies regarding FY in oil palm explored either biotic and abiotic stress scenarios, in a single or combined manner. Most recently, the hypothesis in favor of one biotic cause has lost some grounds to the abiotic one, mainly due to new insights regarding deficient aeration in the soil, which reduces the potential for oxy-reduction, causing changes in the ionic composition of the...

Bacterial disease in marine bivalves, a review of recent studies: Trends and evolution ArchiMer
Paillard, Christine; Leroux, Frederique; Borrego, Juan.
The main microbial diseases affecting marine cultured bivalves have been revised on the basis of the etiologic agents, pathogenesis and pathogenicity. Several recent bivalve-interaction models have been studied, including Pecten larvae-Vibrio pectinicida, brown ring disease, juvenile oyster disease, Pacific oyster nocardiosis and summer mortalities of oysters. In addition, the taxonomy and phylogeny of new potential bivalve pathogens and their virulence factors have been established. Facing the difficulty of identifying bacterial strains associated with molluscan diseases (mainly vibriosis), polyphasic approaches have been developed to correlate the phenotype and genotype of potential pathogens. By evaluating likely virulence mechanisms, developing...

Erwinia chrysanthemi: pectolytic bacterium causing soft rot outbreaks of arracacha in Brazil PAB
Henz,Gilmar Paulo; Reifschneider,Francisco José Becker; Duarte,Valmir.
The objetive of this work was to identify the pectolytic bacteria associated with soft rot of arracacha roots in Brazil. From 1998 to 2001, 227 isolates of Erwinia spp. were obtained from arracacha roots and identified by biochemical and physiological tests (pectolytic activity, lecithinase, a-methyl glucoside, phosphatase, erythromycin sensivity, growth at 37ºC). Of these isolates, 89.9% were identified as E. chrysanthemi (Ech), 9.7% as E. carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) and 0.5% as E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica. The identity of seventeen out of twenty representative isolates of Ech and Ecc was confirmed by PCR (primers '149f', 'L1r', 'ADE1', 'ADE2').

FIRST REPORT OF Phytophthora nicotianae CAUSING ROOT ROT OF SOURSOP IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Frutic.
COSTA,JAQUELINE FIGUEREDO DE OLIVEIRA; ASSUNÇÃO,IRAÍLDES PEREIRA; LIMA,GAUS SILVESTRE DE ANDRADE; MUNIZ,MARIA DE FÁTIMA SILVA; LUZ,EDNA DORA MARTINS NEWMAN.
ABSTRACT In 2013, soursop trees showing symptoms of root rot were observed in a field in Maceió, state of Alagoas, Brazil. It was isolated Phytophthora sp. which pathogenicity was confirmed in the host seedlings. Morphological and physiological characteristics in carrot-agar modified medium were consistent with Phytophthora nicotianae description. The PCR sequences products obtained with ITS1/ITS4 primers were compared to sequences of ribosomal DNA of Phytophthora species from the GenBank database observing high identity with other P. nicotianae isolates. A phylogenetic tree was performed to compare the isolate with other sequences of P. nicotianae, which clustering has been verified with 99% of bootstrap, confirming the morphophysiological studies. This...

New hosts of Oidiopsis haplophylli in the solanaceae family in Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.
Reis,Ailton; Boiteux,Leonardo S.; Paz-Lima,Milton L.; Silva,Patrícia P.; Lopes,Carlos A..
A powdery mildew disease was observed on leaves of Solanum gilo, S. melongena, S. tuberosum S. chacoense, Nicotiana rustica and N. tabacum in Brasília (Federal District), Brazil. Symptoms were mainly characterized by adaxial yellow areas in the leaves corresponding to white fungal colonies on the abaxial surface. Profuse sporulation was often observed. Light microscopy of the fungal colonies revealed the presence of conidiophores emerging through stomata with some having two or three branches. Ellipsoidal, subhyaline conidia were predominantly born singly and terminally on the conidiophore. All morphometrical characteristics agreed with those of Oidiopsis haplophylli (Syn. O. sicula). The teleomorph (Leveillula taurica) was not observed. Inoculation tests...

FUNCTION IN BIOLOGY: ETIOLOGICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVES Acta biol.Colomb.
NIÑO EL-HANI,CHARBEL; FREITAS NUNES-NETO,NEI.
In this paper, we argue for a taxonomy of approaches to function based on different epistemological perspectives assumed with regard to the treatment of this central concept in the life sciences. We distinguish between etiological and organizational perspectives on function, analyzing distinct theories: Wright's selectionist etiological approach and Godfrey-Smith's modern history theory of functions, in the case of the etiological perspective; and Cummins' functional analysis and Collier's interactivist approach to function, among organizational accounts. We explain differences and similarities between these theories and the broader perspectives on function, arguing for a particular way of understanding the consensus without unity in debates about...
