WOOD UTILIZATION OF Eucalyptus grandis IN STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS: DENSITIES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES REA
Lahr,Francisco A. R.; Nogueira,Marta C. de J. A.; Araujo,Victor A. De; Vasconcelos,Juliano S.; Christoforo,André L..
ABSTRACT Over the years, the species of eucalyptus has become a multipurpose raw material. In addition, the most relevant aspect of the use for various purposes is related to the production of a high quality wood, coming from short duration plantations, which is fundamental to the current demand of the industries. However, its use in civil construction has not yet reached a level of importance, due to the low knowledge of many of its resistance properties and the consequent popular fear in the use of reforestation woods, in particular the Eucalyptus grandis. This research investigated its main mechanical properties, aiming to reinforce its constructive applications in wood structures. For this, two physical properties and fourteen mechanical properties, in...

Estimates of genetic parameters of wood traits for sawn timber production in Eucalyptus grandis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Paulo Eduardo Telles dos; Geraldi,Isaias Olívio; Garcia,José Nivaldo.
In this study, the breeding perspectives of 41 open-pollinated progenies of Eucalyptus grandis were evaluated based on their wood traits. The progenies were distributed in two experiments in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates and linear plots containing six plants each. The traits were assessed at eight years of age. Two trees from each plot were selected for this assessment based on better growth, stem form and phytosanity. Significant differences in basic density, sapwood/heartwood ratio, bowing, specific gravity, parallel compression and static bending were detected among the progenies. These traits were potentially promising for breeding programs, with heritability coefficients that varied from 0.34 to 0.61 on a progeny mean...

Eucalipto, madeira serrada, metodologia de amostragem, regressão multivariada. Log sampling of Eucalyptus grandis trees submitted to selection for sawn timber and energy purposes PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Santos, Paulo Eduardo Telles dos; Lavoranti, Osmir José; Salante, Laurindo.
By the assessment of ten technological traits of eucalypt wood for sawn timber and energy purposes,it was developed a multivariate statistical procedure in order to determine the sequence of logs to be sampled, in such a way to represent all statistical variation contained within the tree and, accordingly, to establish the appropriate sampling intensity. In the present work, it was used a total of 40 logs from four trees of Eucalyptus grandis provenance Concórdia-SC aged 18 years. By using principal components regression analysis and stepwise selection techniques, it was showed that only two logs, corresponding to the first (0.05 m to 2.60 m) and fourth (8.85 m to 11.40 m) positions into the tree, contained 99.2 % of the total variation detected...

Study of stem form using artificial neural networks and taper functions PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Schikowski, Ana Beatriz; Dalla Corte, Ana Paula; Sanquetta, Carlos Roberto.
Artificial neural networks (ANN) have great potential as an alternative to conventional regression analysis because of its learning capacity of data set information and the generalization of learning to unknown data. So, the aim of this study was to apply RNAs to estimate relative diameter, total and commercial volume, as well as to compare their performance in relation to conventional taper functions. Data from 47 trees of Eucalyptus sp. were used in the training and validation of ANNs and in adjusting Hradetzky and Garay taper functions. The performance of ANNs were similar to the taper functions for diameter estimative, furthermore the estimative of commercial and total volume applying ANNs were more accurate and presented less residues scattering than...

Nutrient leaching potential following application of papermill lime-sludge to an acidic clay soil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Vettorazzo,S. C.; Amaral,F. C. S.; Chitolina,J. C..
This experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions with soil pots during 210 days, to evaluate the effect of calcitic papermill lime-sludge application (at the rates 0, 773, 1.547, and 2.320 mg kg-1 or respective equivalents to control, 2, 4, and 6 t ha-1), on chemical composition of soil leachate and its effects on eucalypt growth and yield. Highest soil leachate pH, SO4, and Na concentrations occurred in the 4 and 6 t ha-1 treatments. Soil leachate nitrate concentrations decreased with increasing lime-sludge rate. Soil leachate phosphate remained low (below the detection limit) in all treatments until 120 days, while the concentration increased in the lime-sludge treatments at 210 days (last sampling) in about 600 mg L-1. Lime-sludge decreased...

Processing Eucalyptus cloeziana seed lots to improve purity, germination and vigor Scientia Agricola
Michelon,Thomas Bruno; Vieira,Elisa Serra Negra; Panobianco,Maristela.
ABSTRACT Eucalyptus cloeziana is one of the highest-density wood species offering significant added value, frequently used in the construction and furniture industries. Despite its suitability, it may be overlooked on account of its propagation difficulties due either to its low rooting cutting capacity or to its seeds having a low germination rate perhaps attributable to the high proportion of indistinguishable impurities within the seed lots. This study aimed to develop an efficient technique for Eucalyptus cloeziana seed processing to increase the physical purity and, consequently, the physiological quality of the seed lot. Three seed lots, separated by size in sieves with 1.18, 1.00, and 0.84 mm square openings, were used. X-ray analyses were carried...

Temporal dynamics of the response to Al stress in Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alcântara,Berenice K. de; Pizzaia,Daniel; Piotto,Fernando A.; Borgo,Lucélia; Brondani,Gilvano E.; Azevedo,Ricardo A..
Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early...

Quisen,Regina; Oliveira,Yohana de; Pileggi,Marcos; Cuquel,Francine; Quoirin,Marguerite.
The objectives of the present work were to establish the minimal lethal dose of the selective agent to determine the type and concentration of appropriate antibiotics for the elimination of Agrobacterium tumefaciens inoculated explants, without interfering with the regenerative potential of the E. camaldulensis cotyledonary explants. Non-transformed explants were cultivated in medium supplemented with kanamycin. The results showed that the antibiotic was suitable for the selection of transformed cells in the concentration of 9 mg L-1 as it inhibited the growth of non-transformed cells. Cotyledons infected with A. tumefaciens were cultivated in MS N/2 medium supplemented with BAP, ANA, Km and cefotaxime or AugmentinÒ . The highest average of regenerated...

Effects of hydric deficiency on gas exchange parameters and metabolism of Eucalyptus grandis clones Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Coscolin,Renata B. S.; Broetto,Fernando; Marchese,José A.; Campohermoso,Marco C.; Paladini,Marcos V..
The metabolic effects caused by hydric deficiency (HD) on Eucalyptus grandis clones were assessed by an experiment where plants were cultivated in four blocks. The first was the control block, normally irrigated, whereas the other three blocks were submitted to cycles of hydric deficiency. Analysis of photosynthetic efficiency, enzymatic activity of antioxidant response system, level of pigments and L-proline concentration were performed to evaluate the HD effects. Results showed that HD altered some parameters related to photosynthetic activity, pigments accumulation, proline and enzymatic activity. Clone 433 of E. grandis presented higher response ability to HD.
