Differentiation and characterization of burrows of two species of armadillos in the Brazilian Cerrado RChHN
Guilherme Trovati,Roberto.
BACKGROUND: Signs left by some mammals such as tracks, trails, burrows, scratches, feces, hair, and others can be an important tool for species identification. This study was conducted in the Itirapina Ecological Station, in the southern Brazilian Cerrado, whose main objectives were to (1) compare the burrow morphometric variables of Cabassous unicinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus and (2) check for differences in the occurrence of foraging burrows in two different environments: areas with vegetation (shrubby grassland) and areas without vegetation (roads). The collected measures of armadillo's burrows have been width, height, depth, and angle relative to the soil. To record foraging burrows (<70 cm), the linear transect methodology was used...

Infecção natural por Entamoeba histolytica Schaudinn, 1903 em Euphractus sexcinctus (tatu) mantidos em cativeiro Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Soares,C.A.; Oliveira,J.B.; Brito,M.D.C..
Fecal samples of two species of armadillos Euphractus sexcinctus (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae), kept in captivity were analysed by direct and sedimentation methods. Entamoeba histolytica Schaudinn, 1903 and E. coli Grassi, 1879 (Amoebida, Endamoebidae) cysts were observed, the former for the first time in armadillos. This parasitism is worthy of registration in the literature because of the possibility of transmission to the human being when these animals are kept in captivity.

Hepatic steatosis in six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus Linnaeus, 1758) Biota Neotropica
Silva,Andrezza Braga Soares da; Rizzo,Marcia dos Santos; Viloria-Petit,Alicia; Conde Junior,Airton Mendes.
Abstract The six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus) stands out among wild mammals due to the rare occurrence of spontaneous metabolic diseases. When altered, the liver, which is important in metabolism, may trigger a dysfunctional cascade, leading to hepatic steatosis. Here we describe a case of hepatic steatosis in a six-banded armadillo living in captivity. The female specimen was captured and donated to the Federal University of Piaui under SISBIO authorization nº53303. The animal was first referred for a veterinary clinical evaluation, and then euthanized following the ethical standards of the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine. At the start of the dissection, the abdominal cavity was accessed and sections of all ex situ liver lobes, spleen...

Search for Mycobacterium leprae in wild mammals BJID
Pedrini,Sílvia Cristina Barboza; Rosa,Patrícia Sammarco; Medri,Ísis Meri; Mourão,Guilherme; Bagagli,Eduardo; Lopes,Carlos Alberto de Magalhães.
Leprosy is still a worldwide public health problem. Brazil and India show the highest prevalence rates of the disease. Natural infection of armadillos Dasypus novemcinctus with Mycobacterium leprae has been reported in some regions of the United States. Identification of bacilli is difficult, particularly due to its inability to grow in vitro. The use of molecular tools represents a fast and sensitive alternative method for diagnosis of mycobacteriosis. In the present study, the diagnostic methods used were bacilloscopy, histopathology, microbiology, and PCR using specific primers for M. leprae repetitive sequences. PCR were performed using genomic DNA extracted from 138 samples of liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and skin of 44 D. novemcinctus, Euphractus...
