Efficient phosphorus (P) recycling from rural and urban areas is becoming an increasing issue due to the scarcity of natural P deposits. Based on a life cycle assessment (LCA), we analyzed the environmental performance of 17 different P supply and recycling approaches from urban wastes, biosolids and slaughterhouse wastes compared with the two conventional inorganic fertilizers phosphate rock and triple superphosphate. In the Horizon 2020-project "Pathways to phase-out contentious inputs from organic agriculture in Europe" (Organic PLUS), the WP SOIL (WP5) explores the topics of peat, plastic and animal-derived fertilisers as contentious inputs to organic farming. Peat is studied as an input in various growing media in horticulture. Plastic is studied for use as a soil cover. Manure from non-organic sources is the main focus, but fertilisers complying with vegan standards will also be studied (e.g. green manure).
