European small pelagic fish distribution under global change scenarios ArchiMer
Schickele, Alexandre; Goberville, Eric; Leroy, Boris; Beaugrand, Gregory; Hattab, Tarek; Francour, Patrice; Raybaud, Virginie.
The spectre of increasing impacts on exploited fish stocks in consequence of warmer climate conditions has become a major concern over the last decades. It is now imperative to improve the way we project the effects of future climate warming on fisheries. While estimating future climate‐induced changes in fish distribution is an important contribution to sustainable resource management, the impacts on European small pelagic fish—representing over 50% of the landings in the Mediterranean and Black Sea between 2000 and 2013—are yet largely understudied. Here, we investigated potential changes in the spatial distribution of seven of the most harvested small pelagic fish species in Europe under several climate change scenarios over the 21st century. For each...

Estudios bionómicos del bentos de la plataforma bonaerense y su relación con el resto de la plataforma continental argentina. OceanDocs
Roux, A..
The macrobenthic assemblages of the Buenos Aires Province(Argentina) continental shelf were studied from samples collected by the R/V Capitán Cánepa and R/V Capitán Oca Balda along a transect from38 m to 218 m depth. Three faunistic areas were determined, corresponding to the coastal, central and external shelf, inhabited by species originated from the Argentine and/or Magellanic Zoogeographical Provinces. These results confirm the presence of different ecological areas in the Argentine continental shelf. Mussel (Mytilus edulis platensis) beds, red porgy (Sparus pagrus) fishing ground and the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (CFZ) demersal fishing grounds at the continental shelf of Buenos Aires Province were also analyzed to increase the knowledge...

Inventario íctico del litoral costero bonaerense y uruguayo OceanDocs
Ruarte, C.O.; Rico, M.R.; Lucifora, L..
The bibliography and the registries of fish caught in the Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Uruguay coastal littoral area during 33 research cruises were analyzed to elaborate the first ichthyic inventory of the region. A total of 147 species belonging to 71 families was registered. The figure represents 48% of the specimens reported for the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone and 37% of the marine species mentioned for the SW Atlantic. The list of coastal marine fishes of Uruguay and north of Argentina is the first attempt to provide basic information to evaluate possible temporal changes of the ichthyic composition in the area. The lists or inventories constitute an essential tool for fisheries management, the generation of statistic data and gathering of...

Artes de pesca artesanales en la costa del Ecuador OceanDocs
Castro, R.; Rosero, J..
The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics, dimensions, materials used in the fishing gear and boats currently used by the artisanal fisheries along the ecuadorian coast. Three provinces were visited (Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas), in which the artisanal ports with the greatest fishing effort and landings along the coast are registered. Interviews with the fishermen, identification of the fishing gear and certain measurements were taken to obtain the information on the desing, dimensions and materials used in the fishing gear as well as the techniques and principal fishing zones. Aditionally the diversity of the fishing boats was noted varying from small sailing rafts to the fast-glass boats with outboard engines.

Bezzi, S.I.; Ibáñez, P.M..
Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass in the Argentine and Uruguayan sectors of the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and in the area that extends from the limit of the shared zone to 41° S was estimated (SW Atlantic Ocean). The contribution to the strata total biomass in each sector was analyzed and complemented with observations on the structure of the population. The basic data to estimate biomass derived from the evaluation surveys of the Hake Project carried out in winter or spring 1994, 1996-2001 and 2003. In 1999 biomass north of 41° S decreased to 30. (112,280 t) of the estimates made for 1994. In 2000 it increased to 165,000 t and in 2003 it was estimated at 156,407 t. A remarkable decrease of the AUCFZ percentage of contribution to the...

Improvements in the Ghanaian tuna statistics system OceanDocs
Quartey, R.; Bannerman, P..
Light fishing operations (LFO) in Ghana is concentrated in the three major coastal municipalities of Greater Accra (Tema), Central (Mumford & Elmina) and Western (Sekondi) Regions; these areas have the port facilities for landing of the catch by the larger inshore vessels that operate the purse seine fishery in Ghana and which predominantly operate the light attraction. Currently there are about 250 registered inshore vessels in the country whose sizes range between 39 – 60 feet , only a small fraction are actually working at the moment due to problems with spare parts and operations. Light attraction is the technique of aggregating fish by artificial light; and light fishing is the process of fishing the attracted fish by hooking, gill-netting or by...

Irusta, G.; Castrucci, R.; Simonazzi, M..
The activity of the hake (Merluccius hubbsi) commercial offshore ice chilling fleet and its relation to concentration, distribution and population areas of the stock distributed between 34ºS - 41ºS is described. The catch per unit of effort (CPUE) for the 1986-2005 period was estimated applying the General Linear Model. Data derived from the offshore fishing logs provided by the Argentine Secretary of Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Food Administration and the information obtained in research cruises carried out in 1994, 1996-2001, 2003-2005 to evaluate the resource population abundance. During the main fishing time in the sector (quarter 2) and up until 1991 the fleet scattered within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (SW Atlantic). Later on...
