Technique of spinal cord compression induced by inflation of epidural balloon catheter in rabbits (Oryctologus cuniculus): efficient and easy to use model 42
FONSECA,ANTONIO F.B. DA; SCHEFFER,JUSSARA P.; COELHO,BARBARA P.; AIELLO,GRACIANE; GUIMARÃES,ARTHUR G.; GAMA,CARLOS R.B.; VESCOVINI,VICTOR; CABRAL,PAULA G.A.; OLIVEIRA,ANDRÉ L.A..
ABSTRACT The most common cause of spinal cord injury are high impact trauma, which often result in some motor impairment, sensory or autonomic a greater or lesser extent in the distal areas the level of trauma. In terms of survival and complications due to sequelae, veterinary patients have a poor prognosis unfavorable. Therefore justified the study of experimental models of spinal cord injury production that could provide more support to research potential treatments for spinal cord injuries in medicine and veterinary medicine. Preclinical studies of acute spinal cord injury require an experimental animal model easily reproducible. The most common experimental animal model is the rat, and several techniques for producing a spinal cord injury. The...

Contractile profile of esophageal and gastric fundus strips in experimental doxorubicin-induced esophageal atresia 56
Capeto,F.A.; Lima,F.J.B.; Okoba,W.; Ramos,F.L.; Messias,T.F.A.; Rigonatto,G.A.; Sbragia,L.; Magalhães,P.J.C.; Melo-Filho,A.A..
Esophageal atresia (EA) is characterized by esophageal and gastric motility changes secondary to developmental and postsurgical damage. This study evaluated the in vitro contractile profile of the distal esophagus and gastric fundus in an experimental model of EA induced by doxorubicin (DOXO). Wistar pregnant rats received DOXO 2.2 mg/kg on the 8th and 9th gestational days. On day 21.5, fetuses were collected, sacrificed, and divided into groups: control, DOXO without EA (DOXO-EA), and DOXO with EA (DOXO+EA). Strips from the distal esophagus and gastric fundus were mounted on a wire myograph and isolated organ-bath system, respectively, and subjected to increasing concentrations of carbamylcholine chloride (carbachol, CCh). The isolated esophagus was also...

Assessment and Management of Invasive Alien Predators 7
Park, Kirsty; University of Stirling; k.j.park@stir.ac.uk.
Although invasive alien species have been identified as the second greatest threat to biodiversity after habitat loss, characterizing and quantifying their impacts on native species and habitats remains a fundamental problem in conservation biology. Here, I review the techniques that are currently used to assess the impact of invasive alien species on biodiversity, highlighting both their uses in invasive species ecology and their limitations in establishing a causal relationship. Adopting a hypothesis-driven experimental approach to impact assessment, and to eradication efforts through adaptive management, would benefit our ecological understanding of invasive species without delaying critical management action that could reduce the spread of invasive...

Setting of a procedure for experimental incubation of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) embryos 5
Suquet, Marc; Amourda, Christopher; Mingant, Christian; Queau, Isabelle; Lebrun, Luc; Brizard, Raphael.
Standardized experimental protocols designed to study Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) gamete quality have not been previously published. Gamete sampling variations and confounding effect of interacting factors result in large variations between replicates, decreasing the effects of the studied factors. This work aims at defining a standardized procedure for incubation of oyster embryos designed for experimental purposes. In a first phase, four experiments were developed to improve embryo sampling and handling. They showed that a minimum of 50 embryos must be counted to decrease the variation between counting replicates. For reliable results, sampling must be carried out from 0 to 7 min after a careful agitation of seawater containing embryos...

Setting of a procedure for experimental fertilisation of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) oocytes 5
Song, Yun-peng; Suquet, Marc; Queau, Isabelle; Lebrun, Luc.
The quality of oyster spermatozoa has become an issue for modern aquaculture. However, reliable protocols used to assess gamete quality are lacking. The aim of this work is to define a standardised experimental fertilisation protocol for Pacific oyster oocytes. Six experiments have been carried out in this study. The optimal conditions for Pacific oyster experimental fertilisation have been defined: (1) oocytes can be conserved in seawater for at least 4 h before fertilisation. (2) oocyte concentration: 100-1000 ml(-1) seawater, (3) fertilisation volume: 10-100 nil, (4) spermatozoa: oocyte ratio: 400 to maintain discriminating conditions, (5) gamete contact time: longer than 10 mill and (6) fertilisation and incubation temperatures: both 19 degrees C. The...

The Response of Bronchial Associated Lymphoid Tissue to Intratracheal Administration of Peste des Petit Ruminants Virus and its Co-Infection with Mannheimia hemolytica in Goats 77
Emikpe,B. O; Ajisegiri,W. A.
The morphometry of bronchial associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) and its possible exploration as to the control of common viral and bacterial pneumonia and their co-infection in Sub-Saharan goats is scanty in literatures. This investigation utilizes archival tissues from study that involved 35 apparently healthy West Africa Dwarf goats which were divided into groups PPRV and PPRV+MH with 15 goats each while 5 goats served as control. PPRV goats were infected intratracheally with 1ml of pure cultured 106.5 TCID50 PPR Pestes des petit Ruminant virus (PPRV) grown in baby hamster kidney cell lines and PPRV+MH with 1 ml of PPRV and a week later 1ml of MH (Mannheimia hemolytica) A2. The BALT number, type and cellularity were determined using standard methods with...
