Plot size variation to quantify yield of potato clones Horticultura Brasileira
Bisognin,Dilson Antônio; Storck,Lindolfo; Costa,Liege C da; Bandinelli,Maurício G.
The objective of this paper was to study plot size variation among potato clones to increase experimental precision of yield performance trials. The experiment was carried out at the experimental area of the Horticulture Dept., UFSM, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Tubers of five potato clones were planted in two rows of 60 hills in August 2004. For all ten experimental rows, combined plots were formed adding a different number of adjacent hills of the same row. Soil heterogeneity index and optimum plot size were estimated for each row. Real differences between treatment means for each clone and all clones were estimated using the Hatheway technique. The experimental precision of potato yield trials varied with the evaluated clone because of...

Santos,Osmarino Pires dos; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Nardino,Maicon; Olivoto,Tiago; Pelegrin,Alan Junior de; Szareski,Vinícius Jardel; Ferrari,Mauricio; Nunes,Andrei Caíque Pires; Demari,Gustavo Henrique; Lautenchleger,Francine; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Maia,Luciano Carlos da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the consistency of the methods of Annicchiarico, Lin & Binns, Wricke, and factor analysis in identifying eucalyptus clones with stability, adaptability, and high productive potential. Eight-four clones, with three years of age, from the genetic breeding program of the company CMPC Celulose Riograndense were used. Three field experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, in an 84x3 factorial arragement, with 20 replicates of one plant per plot. The clones were evaluated as to diameter at breast height, plant height, and volume of wood. The methods of Annicchiarico and Lin & Binns are highly correlated with each other, and their use together with the method of Wricke is a...

OPTIMUM PLOT SIZE AND NUMBER OF REPLICATIONS IN PAPAYA FIELD EXPERIMENT Rev. Bras. Frutic.
SCHMILDT,EDILSON ROMAIS; SCHMILDT,OMAR; CRUZ,COSME DAMIÃO; CATTANEO,LAERCIO FRANCISCO; FERREGUETTI,GERALDO ANTÔNIO.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the optimum plot size and number of replications in papaya field experiments. Eleven variables were evaluated in four cultivars of papaya with planting in different seasons between 2011 and 2013 in the north of the Espírito Santo state. Analysis were made from blank test applied to 240 selected for planting season and cultivate plants in commercial fields. The determination of optimum plot size was performed by applying the methodologies of modified maximum curvature and maximum curvature of coefficient of variation. The determination of the number of repetitions was taken from the least significant difference in average 20% and 30%. The optimum plot size proved the same by the two methods studied for most...

Sample size for the evaluation of ‘BH-65’ papaya fruits under protected cultivation Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Schmildt,Edilson Romas; Schmildt,Omar; Salinas,Irene; Hueso,Juan José; Pinillos,Virginia; Cuevas,Julián.
Abstract The cultivation of papaya under greenhouse has become recently a profitable alternative for horticultural crops in different regions of the world, among them South East Spain. The objective of this work was to determine the sample size to evaluate fruit quality features in mature fruits of ‘BH-65’ papaya cultivated under greenhouse in Almería (Spain). With this aim, fruits were harvested at stage 2 in July 2013, and at the end of the production cycle in March 2014. On each occasion and when fruits reached maturation phenological stage 5, 26 fruits were evaluated for physical characteristics (weight, length, diameter, cavity width), total soluble solids content, and color attributes of skin and pulp. The optimal sample size was calculated using a...

PLOT SIZE IN THE EVALUATION OF PAPAYA SEEDLINGS 'BAIXINHO DE SANTA AMÁLIA' IN TUBES Rev. Bras. Frutic.
CELANTI,HUMBERTO FELIPE; SCHMILDT,OMAR; ALEXANDRE,RODRIGO SOBREIRA; CATTANEO,LAERCIO FRANCISCO; SCHMILDT,EDILSON ROMAIS.
ABSTRACT Were evaluated three characters in papaya seedlings 'Baixinho de Santa Amália' to estimate the optimum plot size and the number of replications in a completely randomized experiment, a randomized block and Latin square. The characters were seedling height, leaf number and length of roots from uniformity test with 240 seedlings. The determination of the optimum plot size was done by applying the method of Hatheway (1961). The number of seedlings per plot for seedling production is variable depending on the number of treatments and replications assumed precision, the character in question and the experimental design. Comparing designs, the plot size is greater in the Latin square, followed by a randomized block design and completely randomized, and...

The spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini production Agronomy
Benz, Vilson; Lúcio, Alessandro Dal’Col; Lopes, Sidinei José.
It is necessary to know the production variability of experimental units in a protected environment, both in terms of space and throughout different harvests. This knowledge helps reduce experimental error and increases result reliability in combination with the adoption of appropriate experimental techniques and cultural management. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini fruit production as cultivated in a protected environment. The study used production data from exploratory experiments under protected cultivation in the Department of Plant Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria. Different units sizes were simulated on the basis of known production values for the number of...

Sample size for estimate the average of Passiflora caerulea fruits traits Ciência Rural
Bandeira,Cirineu Tolfo; Fortes,Sabrina Kitina Giordano; Toebe,Marcos; Saifert,Luciano; Giacobbo,Clevison Luiz; Welter,Leocir José.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to determine the sample size needed to estimate the average of wild passion fruit ( Passiflora caerulea ) traits. It was collected randomly, 133, 99 and 133 fruit of wild passion fruit in 30, 21 and 29 plants, located respectively, in the cities of São Borja, Itaqui and Uruguaiana, on the west border of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, totaling 365 fruits harvested in 80 plants. In each fruit were measured ten traits: width, length, fruit, skin, and pulp weight, pulp yield, luminosity and tone of skin and pulp. Then, central tendency, dispersion and distribution measures were calculated and the normality of the data checked. After, it was determined the sample size needed to estimate the average for each character, assuming...

Optimum plot size and number of replications related to selective precision Ciência Rural
Storck,Lindolfo; Lopes,Sidinei José; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto.
Planning agricultural trials and evaluating their precision is important in determining the credibility of the results obtained from the research. There are various methods for estimating optimum plot size and various statistics used to measure precision. Selective precision has been cited recently as being an adequate measurement for evaluating experimental precision. The aim of this study is to propose a modification in the way the optimum plot size is estimated, related to the variability of the experimental area and prefixed selective precision. The method was applied to a set of six trials with potatoes. The optimum plot size, which was estimated on the basis of the relation between the variation coefficients and different plot sizes, can be estimated...
