This contribution deals with a subject that, at the latest, became topical for organic farmers since the occurence of the foot and mouth disease. It shows how livestock owners affected by an animal disease overcame the killing of the entire livestock. Cases of zoonosis not only have economical impacts on farmers, the experience leaves them traumatized. The article makes an appeal to develop special counselling programmes, which include the particular situation of organic farmers dealing with such traumatic crisis. |

The paper reviews a wide range of studies of organic farmers published over the last 20 years using the framework of adoption/diffusion. The model that was developed by rural sociologists in the US and was the main guiding theory for the development of agricultural extension work. After a summary of the adoption/diffusion model and a short description of organic farming and its development in Europe, many similarities in personal and social characteristics of organic farmers in earlier and later studies with innovators and early adopters, particularly of environmental innovations are identified. The comparison of the characteristics of organic farming with other innovations shows differences, some of which have been used to develop some recommendations how... |

The paper contributes to the understanding of change to sustainable agriculture at the farm level, arguing that variability and length and of the process, in terms of farmers’ decision-making and the impact on farms, need to be recognised. Potential variables influencing the process of conversion to organic farming, and key stages of Adoption are reviewed, with particular focus on how farmers evaluate and experience systems change and the relevance of the Adoption/Diffusion model. This is contrasted with observations of the conversion to organic milk production on case farms in the UK. Three key stages of such change processes are conceptualised, and the relevance of such a framework for research and support of farmers during periods of change is discussed. |

Are organic farms suited to offer educational training for managers and stakeholders working in leading positions in companies or institutions? Eight interviews with experts were carried out in 2007 and analysed by methods of qualitative social research. Substantial deficiencies of managers and executives lie in the field of soft skills and have their origin in the school system among other reasons. The basic precondition for a successful course/training is the transfer of items that were perceived and learned in daily life. The experts are convinced that organic farms are well suited to offer educational courses and seminars for managers and executives especially because of some characteristics of organic farming: holistic and systemic perception,... |

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is increasingly practised in different countries all over the world and can be seen as a step towards a new style of urban-rural relationship. However, it is argued that CSA is an “utopian entertainment for a few middle class consumers and their fortunate few farmer friends” (Goodman and DuPuis 2002, p. 17). Often, such CSA projects rest on organic agriculture, a farming system which in turn provides food mainly to the middle class of well-educated concerned consumers (Morgan and Murdoch 2000). Thus, one could argue that organic CSA is a highly exclusive concept, and that, in consequence, building urban-rural relationships depends on a small part of society ignoring, for example, poorer, often less educated consumers.... |

This paper uses a case study of small-scale rice and vegetable producers in West Bengal, India to argue that some of the same infrastructural and technical roots to problems that plague small farmers attempting to use chemically-intensive farming methods also hinder their ability to fully convert to global-style organic farming. In particular, problems in accessing knowledge and technical inputs are likely to translate into difficulties in adopting and maintaining organic production practices. This case study raises the question of whether the global organic model, which is highly dependent on specialized, knowledge-intensive techniques and expensive inputs, offers a true alternative for the developing country context. A locally developed model based on... |
