Feed extrusion process description R. Bras. Zootec.
Rokey,Galen J.; Plattner,Brian; Souza,Edivaldo M. de.
The following work discusses the main features of feed extrusion process explaining the expected effects on the final product according to the raw material used as starch, protein, fat and fiber. The selection of processing equipments as feeder, preconditioner and extruder is discussed considering the involved costs and the probability of future expansion. Dryers are also essential in the extrusion process as it reduces the level of moisture in an extrusion cooked product. High moisture levels increase the water activity which favors the bacterial and mold growth so an overview of different kinds of dryers is considered. Guidelines for an economic prediction are shown to determine the potential for profit considering the input of raw material cost, energy...

corotating twin screw extruder was used together with response surface rnethodology to study the effect of feed moisture content and particle size on the characteristics of corn extrudates. The operating conditions were fixed at screw speed 250 rpm, banel temperature 140'C, fecd rate 16 kg/hr. The independent variables were selected at 4 levels (13.62,15.16, 16.66 and lg.llo/o wb) for feed moisture contents and at 5levels (0.18,0.38,0.84, 1.01, 1.35 mm.) for parriclc sizc. Response variables were expansion ratio, bulk density. breaking force, water absorption index and water solubility index. Regression analysis showed that change in all responses for corn extrudates were promoted by feed moisture content rather than partide size of feed. The seconcl ordcr...

Plug Flow Analysis for the Design of the Compaction Region of a Tapered Screw Extruder Biomass Briquetting Machine CIGR Journal
Orisaleye, Ifeoluwa; Ojolo, Sunday.
The study of compaction or solids conveying in a screw extruder has been carried out majorly on the straight screws using the plug flow analysis. Despite this, the analysis of the straight screw appears to be complex as contained in existing literatures based on the force and torque balance. The tapered screw, which is considered to be an effective option for biomass compaction, introduces greater complications because the geometry is constantly changing. In this study, a method based on the traction and retardation mechanism of friction is developed for a fully unwound screw channel utilizing only the force balances. The procedure has been used to carry out a parametric analysis of the tapered screw extruder for a screw press biomass briquetting machine....

Influence of Food Extruder Die Dimensions on Extruded Products Expansion CIGR Journal
Adekola, Kehinde Adedeji.
This paper studied the effects of food extruder die dimensions on the extrudate expansion indices using twin-screw extruder. The extruder has 59.6 mm screw diameter and screw L/D ratio of 20. The die dimensions considered are die length, die diameter and die temperature. The feed material used is yellow corn flour. Dies with diameter ranging from 2.5 – 5.0 were used to determine the effect of die nozzle diameter on extrudate expansion. Results obtained showed that radial expansion of the extrudate decreased with increasing die diameter. An average reduction of about 42% in radial expansion was recorded for a difference of 2 mm in die diameter. The overall expansion of the extrudate was not affected by changes in die diameter for all the diameters and...
