Discards of the commercial fleet in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) directed to hake Merluccius hubbsi were estimated in weight and number of individuals. The dynamics of the ice-chilling and freezer fleets per area and quarter and processes of discarding were analyzed. The estimation method was based on the comparison of landings and surveys length composition, the latter filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet to rebuild the length distribution of catches. It is concluded that discards had an annual variation of 42,000 t-148,000 t in the 1990-1997 period, which represented between 30 and 50 in weight and 11-24 in number of actual catches. In order to better understand the behaviour of the trawler processing freezer fleet in the Argentine Sea, an analysis of yields and structural characteristics for the 1989-98 period was carried out. The relationship between structural variables and yield expressed in kilos per day was explained with a simplified asymptotic model. The fleet was divided into four homogeneous strata. Common hake is the target of stratum I and stratum II which are deeply affected by overfishing of the species. As of 1993, in stratum III, common hake was replaced by other pelagic and demersal species, mainly hoki. In fleet stratum IV southern blue whiting and hoki were caught. Catches of the latter increased during the last three years. Pursuant to SAGyP resolution No. 814/93, during August-December 1995, six INIDEP Fishery Observers trips on board of processing vessels of the Argentine fleet were carried out. They represented 256 navigation days, 232 effective fishing days, 725 fishing trawls and 2,245 trawling hours. Data measured on board were compared to those reported in the fishing log corresponding to the same cruise and submitted to the DNPyA by the Skipper. Catches observed and reported differ by 3985,7 t (28.2. ), with a maximum difference of 1,200 t in a single cruise. In the case of trawling hours, an important fluctuation of values was observed and, in two cases, the number of hours declared exceeded those actually performed (111 and 72).
