Growing Vegetables Without Irrigation. More locally grown food in semi-arid regions is possible Organic Eprints
Quinn, Robert M..
There is a growing conflict between cities and agriculture for fresh water. To learn what we can grow without irrigation in semi-arid regions, and to demonstrate the potential of a more local food production, I have been experimenting with dry land storage vegetables (potatoes, winter squash and onions) on our organic farm in North Central Montana in the Northern Great Plains of North America.

Organic pig production 2014 -without castration Organic Eprints
Organic pork is a clear alternative to conventional pork because organic pig production, with outdoor access and roughage, is quite different. The low market share (1 %) for organic pork provides a promising development potential. Consumer expectation for a natural product means that a stop for castration could provide new marketing possibilities. A recent pilot study on production of entire males on commercial organic farms indicates that the proportion of organic produced entire male pigs with boar taint is so high that it is a major barrier for a marked orientated growth in organic pig production. In this project we develop a management concept for future organic pig production without castration, with a documented low level of entire male pigs with a...

Research report on organic aquaculture and consumer perception – PART I Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Thorkild; Kristensen Dahl, Johan.
Surveys performed among consumers showed that the knowledge about sustainability and organic fish is relatively fragmentary; e.g. stories from the media detached from the context “overfishing”, not healthy fish farmed in Asia etc. Very few was able to identify specific rules for organic fish, and often they were mixed up with the MSC certification. Most part of the Danish organic fish production is currently exported to Germany and due to this the research project RobustFish has investigated the perception of organic fish among German consumers. In cooperation with Fachhochschule Münster Aalborg University has made a survey among German consumers on how they perceive organic fish. The investigations showed that the perception of organic fish is influenced...

Innovating out of the Fishmeal Trap: The role of Insect-Based Fish Feed in Consumers’ Preferences for Fish Attributes Organic Eprints
Ankamah-Yeboah, Isaac; Jacobsen, Jette Bredahl; Olsen, Sø'ren Boye.
The purpose of the study was to examine the potential market impacts of the use of insect-based protein for fish feed as an innovative approach out of the fish-meal trap. An online questionnaire was used to elicit information on fish consumption choices among 610 German consumers using a Discrete Choice Experiment. Mixed logit and latent class logit models were used to model consumers’ preference heterogeneity. Results showed, that consumers’ preferences for fish attributes such as filets, freshness, ecolabelling and domestic production are heterogeneous and important in consumption choices. The minor share of the respondents was sensitive, while the remaining was indifferent regarding the use of insect based protein as feed in trout production. For...

Farmers and Nature Together: High Nature Value Farming and Agri-Environment Payments for the Republic of Macedonia Organic Eprints
This publication presents many of the key outputs and recommendations from the project ”Promoting High Nature Value Farming and Agri-environment Payments through Civil Society Organisations in the Republic of Macedonia” that was undertaken jointly by the Avalon Foundation (the Netherlands), DEM (Republic of Macedonia), CCI (Republic of Macedonia) and IEEP (UK), with the financial support of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the MATRA Social Transformation Programme. Although the main aim of the project was to build the capacity of civil society organizations in the Republic of Macedonia on the importance of HNV farming, it also has involved carrying out case studies on the occurrence of and issues facing HNV farming systems in three...

Partnering for Farmland Biodiversity Conservation: Civil Society and Farmers Working Hand-In-Hand Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
Agriculture has been Macedonia’s backbone for centuries and has always played an important role in Macedonian society. By maintaining landscape and biodiversity through the ages, Macedonian farmers have been the true guardians of an important national treasure – biodiversity. They have been the invisible hand managing landscapes, agricultural habitats and enabling farm-linked biodiversity to provide a range of ecosystem services. Pollination; pest, disease, flood and fire regulation; preservation of genetic resources; and the provision of food, fibre, natural medicine, pharmaceuticals and appealing landscapes are only a few of these services. Agricultural biodiversity under threat Many of the Macedonian landscapes and habitats that are important for...

Organic Trout Ova/Fry also available from Danish Hatcheries Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
One year ahead of the deadline for implementation of complete organic aquaculture life cycle - organic ova/fry is available from danish hatcheries.According to the EU Regulation on Organic Aquaculture, the fish production shall exclusively be based on organic fry from 2016. Particularly, in organic farming, medication is only allowed within very strict limits. Therefore, the robustness of the fry to diseases is crucial. Especially, this concerns the most serious trout fry disease in Danish aquaculture, Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). The robustness of the fry seems to be related to larval developmental rate and to the dietary content of specific Ω-3 fatty acids (HUFAs). Therefore a recently launched project Robustfish are going to perform stress and...

Food security of small holding farmers: comparing organic and conventional systems in India Organic Eprints
Panneerselvam, P.; Hermansen, John E.; Halberg, Niels.
This study compared farm production, crop yield, input cost, and income in organic and conventional farming systems in three states of India: Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The results showed that organic farming reduced the input cost without affecting the net margin in all three states. Total food production was found to be comparable for the two systems in two of three states. While yield of rice and wheat generally was lower under the organic systems, yield from intercropping food crops was generally higher. The number of agro-ecological methods and percentage of farms practicing different agro-ecological methods were higher under organic systems than conventional systems. These results suggest that organic farming has the potential to...
