Agricultural Profits and Farm Household Wealth: A Farm-level Analysis Using Repeated Cross Sections AgEcon
Blank, Steven C.; Erickson, Kenneth W.; Nehring, Richard F.; Hallahan, Charles B..
This study examines the relationship between agricultural profits and farm household wealth across locations and farm sizes in U.S. agriculture. A multiperiod household model is used to develop hypotheses for testing. Results indicate that farmland has out-performed nonfarm investments over the past decade. Thus, households may want to keep their farmland to build wealth, even if it requires them to earn off-farm income. The analysis implies that decision will be made based on farm household wealth factors having little to do with agriculture.

Did the CAP reform affect off-farm labour participation in Italian farms? AgEcon
Corsi, Alessandro; Salvioni, Cristina.
The process of change in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from trade and market distorting measures to more neutral interventions has been long, but in this process the 2003 reform (the so-called Fischler reform) has been the most important step, leading to a more decoupled, and hence less market distorting, support (Oecd, 2004) and introducing the fully decoupled Single Farm Payment Scheme (SFP). In this paper, we estimate a model of operators’ off-farm labour participation from a panel of Italian COP farms drawn from the FADN. To this purpose we use a random effects probit model, thus controlling for unobserved heterogeneity. The results suggest that the effects of the reform on off-farm labour participation, if any, are weak. No variable directly...

Risk Management and the Role of Off-farm Income AgEcon
Freshwater, David; Jette-Nantel, Simon.
The majority of farm households in OECD countries earn more off-farm income than farm income, even including government payments. While this is a well recognized fact its implications for risk management have not been well recognized. Current efforts to reform farm support have focused on the variability of farm household income and largely ignored the variability of total farm household income. Since it is common for farm households to allocate labor and capital across both farm and non-farm opportunities, it is also likely that their attitude to risk in farming can best be understood by seeing farm risk and return in a household portfolio of income. This approach immediately leads to farm risk being less problematic the more diversified the portfolio...

Farm Wealth Inequality Within and Across States in the United States AgEcon
Erickson, Kenneth W.; Moss, Charles B.; Mishra, Ashok K..
This paper uses Theil's (1979) entropy-based measure of inequality and farm-level data to examine changes in farm business wealth (farm equity) of farm households. The farms associated with farm households are grouped by state into ten regions of the United States. The Theil entropy measure is then calculated and used to decompose total inequality of farm wealth into within-state and across-states (between states) inequalities for each region. Results show that since the enactment of the 1996 Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform (FAIR) Act, inequality in farm wealth among farms within a state has decreased relative to the number of farms per state, across all regions. Further, most of the reduction in farm wealth inequality is attributed to...

On the interaction between risk-taking and risk-sharing under farm household wealth heterogeneity AgEcon
Delpierre, Matthieu; Verheyden, Bertrand; Weynants, Stephanie.
Empirical evidence on developing countries shows on the one hand that rich farm-households are more keen to adopt new technologies and are higher risk takers than poor households. On the other hand, however, they are shown to be less vulnerable to income shocks than poor farmers. This paper provides a rationale for these observations. Risk averse agents, heterogeneously endowed with wealth, non-cooperatively decide on their level of subscription to risk-sharing and on the degree of individual production risk they take. Rich households take more risks and subscribe more to risk-sharing. Although risk-sharing allows all households to cope with idiosyncratic shocks, the risk-taking behavior of rich households increases the covariate component of poor...

Adjustment Capacity of Korean Farm Household AgEcon
Kim, Hanho; Kim, Jae-Kyung.
Structural adjustment is defined as the farm household’s behavior of changing its existing farm asset distribution toward more specialized or diversified directions. Farm households are classified into agricultural or non-agricultural based ones. Estimated expected income through switching regression model reveals that higher revenue is expected when adjustment paths toward more specialization and more non-agricultural based activities are chosen.

Which Italian Family Farms Will Have a Successor? AgEcon
Corsi, Alessandro.
The succession in family farm is a critical issue: it not only involves the transmission of wealth, but also of specific skills and of specific farm management techniques. Since a large share of farmers in Italy are old, the lack of prospective successors in their farms would imply that a change in the farm management will take place. In some cases this might lead to the abandonment of farms and to degradation of the territory. It is therefore important to explore the conditions under which a farm household can transmit the farm management within the household itself. In our paper we try to assess which are the determinants of the likely farm succession within the family and we test in a developed country the hypothesis put forward by Rosenzweig and Wolpin...

The persistence of small dairy farms in Austria from an economic perspective AgEcon
Kirner, Leopold; Hambrusch, Josef; Ortner, Karl M..
In the international comparison the structure of milk production in Austria is small scale. The present study presents two theoretical approaches to explain the persistence of small dairy farms in Austria: the opportunity cost principle and the theory of the agricultural household. With regard to the first one it is debatable whether the flat rates really can represent the costs of own production factors in their alternative uses in small enterprises. An illustration on the basis of production cost accounts shows that small dairy farms with no possibilities for the utilization of their own production factors (especially for labour) can cover the production costs by revenues only. Secondly it is argued that agricultural production is likely to continue in...

The Impacts of Change in Local Industrial Composition on Off-Farm Labor Supply AgEcon
Brown, Jason P..
Most U.S. farm households have either the operator or spouse working off-farm for wages and salaries or proprietorships. Additionally, off-farm income continues to grow as a share of total household income. Little is known about how changes in local industrial composition impact off-farm labor decisions. Using a household utility maximization framework, this analysis employs a two-stage process to 1) predict joint off-farm labor participation of operators and spouses, and 2) measure the impact of farm and household characteristics, and changes in county-level industry on levels of off-farm labor supply. Results show that labor participation decisions are jointly determined. Human capital is among the most significant individual characteristics impacting...

Off-farm Employment and Food Consumption at Home and away from Home: Evidence from Farm Households in Taiwan AgEcon
Chang, Hung-Hao; Yen, Steven T..
A body of literature has addressed off-farm work by the farm household, but little is known about the association between off-farm work and food consumption. This paper investigates the extent to which off-farm employment by the farm operator and the spouse affects food expenditures at home and away from home. A dual treatment effect model is developed to estimate a simultaneous equation system of four food categories consumed at home and aggregate food away from home, with binary endogenous off-farm employment by the operator and spouse. Off-farm employment by farm operator and spouse both increase food expenditure away from home, while operator’s off-farm employment decreases staple food consumption at home. Socio-demographic characteristics also play...

Income Diversification of Farm Households: Relevance and Determinants in Germany AgEcon
Pieniadz, Agata; Renner, Swetlana; Rathmann, Christoph; Glauben, Thomas; Loy, Jens-Peter.
During recent years, the number of farms able to generate satisfactory income from agricultural production has continuously decreased in advanced economies. The main reasons are the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy of 1992 and the increasing capitalization of the primary sector. The relevance of income diversification and interest in various development paths of rural households have, therefore, been renewed in political-economic debates in those countries. The aim of this study is to identify factors that determine income diversification in Germany. An econometric model has been estimated based on a comprehensive survey’s data. The results show that the main economic incentive for farm diversification is the expected income increase or...

Household income and expenditure of farmers in Lao PDR: Comparison between rubber tree and sugarcane farmers Thai Agricultural
Leuangsay Phanthasith; Piansak Pakdee; Thanaporn Athipanyakul.
The objective of this study was to compare household income and expenditure between rubber tree and sugarcane farmers. The purposive sampling technique was used for data collection, and a structured questionnaire was used to interview a total of 100 farmers. A descriptive analysis was applied. The results indicated that in 2000-2010, the household income of rubber tree farmers was higher than those sugarcane farmers, especially in long run. The household consumption has increased during 2000-2010. The rubber tree farmers expensed their consumption in food item more than rice, but it was contrary for the sugarcane farmers. The net income of the rubber tree farmers was also greater than the sugarcane farmers; even it was negative in 2005. This can imply that...
