Impacts of socio-economic factors on farm household dynamics - empirical survey data in an agent-based model application AgEcon
Schnicke, Hauke Joachim.
This paper addresses three issues of socio-economic factors of Hungarian farm households and their impacts on structural change. This concerns the role of age as a factor influencing the opportunity costs of labour, the impact of empirical age patterns on structural change, and the role of a varied probability of young farm successors entering into the farming business. Results of a farm household survey are integrated in simulation experiments with the agent-based model AgriPoliS which has been adapted to a Hungarian case study region. It could be shown that impediments of a flexible labour adjustment slow down structural change while the timing of persisting or exiting of farms highly depends on the age distribution of farmers.

Intergenerational Succession on Family Farms: Evidence from Survey Data AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Tietje, Hendrik; Weiss, Christoph R..
This study examines family farms and characteristics affecting farm succession. Based on a farm survey, three aspects of succession are analysed in the paper: the probability of family succession; the likelihood of having a successor designated; and the timing of succession. Large and specialised farms are more likely to be transferred within the family and to have appointed a successor. The number of family members, as well as the experience of farm operator, is also significantly related to the succession behaviour. The probabilities of succession, and of having a successor, first increase with age and then decline again. Furthermore, timing of succession is delayed as the farm holder ages, suggesting most farm operators' succession plans to be...

Wie entstehen HofnachfolgerInnen? AgEcon
Mann, Stefan.
The paper’s objective is to draw and verify a model of entering farming which integrates both psychological and economic factors. It is argued why first identity related factors (like a preference for working with animals) and later environment-related factors (like the farm’s income potential) will typically dominate the process of decision-making. The model is validated by a dataset from a survey among potential farm successors. It can partly be confirmed. It also becomes obvious that daughters have a more negative attitude towards farm succession compared with sons and seem to rely on identity-related factors only.
