Can virtual water 'trade' reduce water scarcity in semi-arid countries? The case of Spain AgEcon
Garrido, Alberto; Novo, Paula; Rodriguez Casado, Roberto; Varela-Ortega, Consuelo.
Agricultural trade is by far the largest vehicle to ‘move’ water virtually around the world. Observing that most countries import and export water embedded in the exchanged products, the objective of this study is to assess the virtual water ‘trade’ in Spain for the period 1997-2006. We differentiate between the green and blue components of virtual water from a hydrological and economic perspective. The combination of spatial and time dimensions offers a unique empirical setting to determine whether virtual water ‘trade’ can contribute to reduce water scarcity. The study reveals that Spain is a net ‘importer’ of virtual water. By far the largest virtual water ‘imports’ are linked to cereals and animal feed products whilst the virtual water ‘exports’ are...

Internetnutzung in der deutschen Agrarwirtschaft: Online-Handelsportale als neue Organisationsform AgEcon
Bocker, Andreas; Brodersen, Claus M..
This paper describes the concept of E-commerce portals, so called E-hubs, in its basic characteristics and analyses their potential impacts on agribusiness enterprises and agricultural markets. Since these impacts depend on the level of market penetration of this new type of organisation, it is further attempted to identify the most relevant factors that determine future acceptance and utilisation of internet portals at sector and enterprise level.

Latin American Agricultural Trade: The Role of the WTO in Sustainable Virtual Water Flows AgEcon
Niemeyer, Insa; Garrido, Alberto.
International agricultural trade has been growing significantly during the last decade. Many countries rely on imports to ensure adequate food supplies to the people. A few are becoming food baskets of the world. This process raises issues about the food security in depending countries and potentially unsustainable land and water use in exporting countries. In this paper, we analyse the impacts of amplified farm trade on natural resources, especially water. Farm exports and imports of five Latin America countries (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Peru and Chile) are examined carefully. A preliminary analysis indicates that virtual water imports can save valuable water resources in water-short countries, such as Mexico and Chile. Major exporting countries,...
