Quantification of floral abnormalities in a population generated from sexual polymorphism aiming at recurrent selection in papaya Bragantia
Moreira,Nádia Fernandes; Pereira,Telma Nair Santana; Catarina,Renato Santa; Cortes,Diego Fernando Marmolejo; Vettorazzi,Júlio Cesar Fiorio; Ramos,Helaine Christine Cancela; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the percentage of deformed fruits (carpelloid, pentandric, and bananoid), summer sterility, repeatability coefficients, and correlations among the variables for floral abnormalities; and select genotypes withthe lowest incidence of deformed fruits and summer sterility. In theexperiment, which involved 254 plants, traits were evaluated using the digital-phenotypic method and the obtained images were processed and analysed using ImageJ v1.48 software with the Cell Counter plugin. Summer sterility had the highest percentage of occurrence in the evaluated periods. Based on the quantificationof total abnormalities, the 30 genotypes with the lowest incidence offloral abnormalities were selected. Summer sterility is...

‘URS Campestre’ seedless orange: a new mutant with female sterility Scientia Agricola
Bender,Renar João; Santos,Rinaldo Pires dos; Guerra,Divanilde; Schwarz,Sergio Francisco; Bender,Stefan da Silveira.
ABSTRACT: Seedlessness in fruit is a trait that is much sought after by juice making industries. Close to the city of São Sebastião do Caí, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, a new mutant orange originating from natural mutation was identified and selected as a seedless material. To determine the mechanisms involved in the absence of seeds, the reproductive structures of this new mutant by comparison with a Valencia sweet orange as control, a cultivar with a profusion of seeds, was analyzed in terms of meiotic behavior, meiotic index, pollen viability, in vitro germination, and ovule features to determine the grounds for seed absence. Other morphological analyzes allowed for visualizing the structures of normal appearance and size in both...
