The status of the northern damselfly Coenagrion hastulatum in the Netherlands, a characteristic dragonfly of non-disturbed shallow lakes (Odonata) The northern damselfly Coenagrion hastulatum is a rare and endangered dragonfly in The Netherlands. In the period 1998-2001 extensive research had been conducted on the distribution of this species in the Netherlands. Old and new data are collated for the first time, and an overview of all current populations is presented. Coenagrion hastulatum now has 16 populations left, in the southern and eastern parts of The Netherlands. The species disappeared from seven sites in the period 1980-2000. Incidental records of wandering individuals give circumstantial evidence that C. hastulatum can migrate over at least 2... |

Terrestrial isopods of the Ooijpolder: part 2. ecology (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea) From 1991 up to 1998 the isopod fauna of 1464 squares of 100x100 m was sampled in the Ooijpolder. This area is situated along the river Waal, east of Nijmegen (the Netherlands), close to the German border. In part 1 (Wijnhoven 2000) the distributions and habitats of seventeen species of woodlice were discussed. In that paper the basic information on topography, methods, species list and list of first and second order habitats can be found. In this second and last part the ecological information is summarised. First the zoogeographical position of the species is indicated. This proved to be important in understanding the distribution patterns and habitats of the species... |

Terrestrial isopods of the Ooijpolder: part 1. distribution (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscidea) The distributions and habitats of woodlice were investigated in ‘the Ooijpolder’, also named ‘the Ooij’. The area of approximately 41 square kilometers is located along the river Waal, east of Nijmegen, Province of Gelderland, The Netherlands (fig. 2). In total 1464 squares of 100 x 100 m (utm) (fig. 9) were sampled by hand from 1991 up to 1998 (Table 1). On a recording form (fig. 5) five first order habitats were distinguished (Table 2): 1. The river foreland is flooded on average for a few weeks once every winter or spring, and is bounded by a winterdyke. 2. The sandy river dunes in the flood plains are inundated only very occasionally. Three old brickstone... |

Protected beetles in the Netherlands (Coleoptera) The status of all by law protected beetles of the Netherlands is discussed. Several specimens of Cerambyx cerdo are known from the Netherlands, but all of these are considered to have been imported with oak-wood. Taking the European distribution into account it is supposed that Cerambyx cerdo once inhabited the Netherlands, but became extinct centuries ago as a result of the disappearance of suitable oak-trees. Both Osmoderma eremita and Dytiscus latissimus were very rare during the last two centuries. Only few specimens from isolated localities were collected in the 20th century, hence they are now considered extinct in the Netherlands. Graphoderus bilineatus was not uncommon in the beginning of the 20th... |

Biology and ecology of the Dutch woodlouse-flies (Diptera: Rhinophoridae) In a previous paper the faunistics of seven Dutch species of Rhinophoridae were summarised (Wijnhoven & Zeegers 1999). In the current publication the distribution, the biology and ecology of six species of woodlouse-flies in the vicinity of Nijmegen, province of Gelderland, the Netherlands, are discussed. The only ‘missing’ species (Stevenia atramentaria (Meigen, 1824)) may be considered extinct in the Netherlands. In total 3490 specimens were recorded from 1996 up to August 2001, 325 of these were collected by hand, 3165 were recorded as sightings. Most observations were made at an old graveyard ‘Daalseweg’ in the city of Nijmegen (fig. 2, 3, 5, table 1). For all species egg... |

The genus Sphegina Meigen, 1822 in the Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) A survey of the genus Sphegina in the Netherlands is given. Some nomenclatural changes are indicated, which resulted in the following five species which are now known from the Netherlands: Sphegina clavata (Scopoli, 1763), Sphegina clunipes (Fallén, 1817), Sphegina elegans (Schummel, 1843), Sphegina sibirica Stackelberg, 1953 and Sphegina verecunda Collin, 1937. Some of the rarer species were confused with other species in the past or overlooked in the field. Several collections were re-examined and new records were gathered. This resulted in new distribution maps for the Dutch species and a description of the habitats. |

Atlas of the Dutch water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) Few biogeographic studies have been published on water mites. Only Lundblad (1962) has published an atlas of the Swedish water mites. So far, there are no complete publications on the distribution of Dutch water mites. Acarologists who worked on Dutch water mites, i.e. A.C. Oudemans (1858-1943), G. Romijn (1868-1930) and A.J. Besseling (1898-1968) have collected in a limited geographical area only. Besseling, therefore, classified most of the water mites as rare or very rare. Davids (1979) adapted this to the knowledge of that time. Since this last publication, many new data have been collected in The Netherlands, including biotopes which had hardly been investigated. This resulted in publications on... |

The syrphid genus Callicera in the Netherlands and Belgium (Diptera: Syrphidae) In Europe six species of Callicera are known. Until recently C. aenea, rufa and fagesii were known from both the Netherlands and Belgium. The authors have studied all available material and have gathered field data. In this paper C. aurata is presented for the first time from the Netherlands. Nine females and one male were observed in south of the province of Limburg. All Belgian specimens of C. aenea proved to be C. aurata (pers. com. L. Verlinden). This means that C. aurata has to be added to the Belgian list and C. aenea has to be eliminated. |

Platycheirus splendidus new for the Netherlands, Belgium and France (Diptera: Syrphidae) Platycheirus splendidus has only recently been described as a cryptic species closely related to P. scutatus. Re-examination of the material of P. scutatus in some of the Dutch collections revealed that P. splendidus also occurs in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. From Belgium one male was found (Bastogne, 23.V.1999, leg and col. J.T. Smit) and one male from France (Dept. Hautes Alpes, Pré de Mme Carle, Gironde, 1850 m, 11.VI.1992, leg. J. & W. van Steenis, col. W. van Steenis). The Dutch records of P. splendidus are summarized in a distribution map. The difference between the males of both species are given in a table. Females were studied briefly, but they... |

Faunistics and ecology of the syrphid genus Epistrophe in The Netherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) Ten species of Epistrophe have been found in the Netherlands, two of which, E. cryptica and E. similis, are recorded here for the first time. The distribution, changes in distribution and ecology of the species were investigated and are illustrated by distribution maps and diagrams of the flight period. In all species, except E. eligans, females were observed more than males. Furthermore, females seem to be active later in the season than males. It is discussed that this is probably caused by the differences in behaviour between the males of the species. |
