Selection of finfish species for aquaculture development in Martinique (FWI). ArchiMer

Since 1981, in Martinique, a programme of selection of fishes suitable for aquaculture has been conducted. Zootechnical and socio-economical constraints have led to the choice of three species, endemic and exotic: the palometa (Trachinotus goodei ), the red drum (Sciaenops ocellata ) and the red florida hybrid (Oreochromis sp.).

Review and current status of the aquaculture potential for the mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus ArchiMer

The mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus , has excellent potential for aquaculture due to its fast growth (2 kg at 6 months, 9 kg at 1 year), good food conversion efficiency (30%, wet weight), high fecundity with natural captive spawns (200,000 eggs/female/2 days year round for a 1 year old female), and high price (US$ 9.00/kg wholesale in Hawaii).

Review of grow-out techniques under tropical conditions: Experience of Thailand on seabass (Lates calcarifer ) and grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) ArchiMer

Seabass and grouper have been reared in cages in coastal waters in Thailand for 10 years. The fingerlings are nursed for a month in nylon nursing cages. Then, the juvenile fish are reared in culture cages which can be stationary or floating. The cage is usually 5 x 5 x 2 metres. The stocking density is around 500 to 2000 fish per cage. The survival rate is approximately 80%. The selling price at the culture site is 80 baht and 250 baht per kg for sea bass and grouper respectively. The culture method and economics of culture are explained.

Nutrition of the seabass Lates calcarifer ArchiMer

The Primary Production Department of Singapore (PPD) studies covered the weaning of seabass from fingerlings stage onwards and the dietary protein requirement of early grow-out fish. Dietary protein requirement of early grow-out seabass was demonstrated to be between 40-50%, at dietary lipid level of 12%, using fishmeal protein. Nevertheless fish growth was significantly higher with trashfish feed, but apparent protein retention was significantly better with formulated feed.

Snook (Centropomidae) and grouper (Serranidae) mariculture in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Basin ArchiMer

Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ).

Intensive larval rearing trials of red drum (Sciaenops ocellata ) in Martinique (F.W.I.). ArchiMer

The red drum Sciaenops ocellata (Linneaus, 1766) was introduced in Martinique (F.W.I.) from the United States (Texas and Florida). Thirteen intensive larval rearing attempts, from 7 batches of imported eggs, have been conducted for two years.

Status and potential of Australian Lates calcarifer culture. ArchiMer

Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings.

This research evaluated the influence of yeast and zinc on growth performance and metabolic responses of Nile tilapia. Diets were formulated to contain 32.0% digestible protein and 3,240 kcal DE/kg diet and the following autolized yeast (%):zinc (mg/kg)relationships: 0.0:0.0; 0.0:79.5; 2.0:0.0; 0.795:79.5; 2.0:200; 4.0:400; 6.0:600; 12.0:1,200 and 14.0:1,400. It was used 135 fingerlings (7.27 ± 0.19 g), distributed in a complete random design in 27 50-L aquaria and they were fed ad libitum four times a day for 128 days. Effect of simulated acid rain on the survival, mortality, behaviour and morphology of African mud catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Animal Sciences

This study simulated acidic habitat for different life stages of Clarias gariepinus to know the effect on survival, mortality, morphology and behaviour. The fish were exposed to pHs 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.01 (control) for 35 days. 100% mortality was recorded for all the life stages in pH 3, and 80, 62 and 36% of mortality of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded in pH 4. In pH 5, 30, 26 and 12% mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded and at pH 6 mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults were 12, 10 and 4% respectively. Na+ and K+ body levels and survival of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) exposed to acute changes of water pH. Ciência Rural

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of water pH on survival and Na+ and K+ body levels of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen, a freshwater catfish. Survival was 100% at pH 4.00 to 9.0 throughout the experiment (96h), and death of all fingerlings was observed only at pH 3.75 or lower and at pH 10.50. There was a significant correlation between water pH and body Na+ levels (but not K+ levels) 72h after transfer. There was a clear reduction in Na+ levels when the transfer was to pH outside the 5.0 - 9.0 range, which is in agreement with the fact that fishes exposed to such pH’s present loss of ions by diffusion and/or a decrease in absorption.
