Local People, Nature Conservation, and Tourism in Northeastern Finland Ecology and Society
Tolvanen, Anne; Finnish Forest Research Institute; anne.tolvanen@metla.fi; Kauppila, Pekka; University of Oulu; pekka.kauppila@oulu.fi.
The opinions and perceptions of local communities are central issues in the sustainable management of conservation areas. During 2002 and 2003, we studied the opinions of local people about nature conservation and the development of tourism to investigate whether these opinions were influenced by socioeconomic and demographic factors. Data were collected via a survey of local residents in six areas with different histories of land use, land ownership, conservation, and tourism development. We classified respondents by cluster analysis into three different groups according to their opinions about nature conservation and tourism development: (1) sympathetic to nature conservation, but quite neutral to tourism development (57.7%); (2) critical of nature...

Empirical Accounting of Adaptation to Environmental Change: Organizational Competencies and Biodiversity in Finnish Forest Management Ecology and Society
Primmer, Eeva; Finnish Environment Institute; eeva.primmer@ymparisto.fi; Wolf, Steven A; Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University; saw44@cornell.edu.
Integration of biodiversity conservation into economic utilization of natural resources has become a central response to the challenges of sustainable development. However, the resources and competencies required to implement such an integrated strategy at the level of the individual, the organization, and the sector are not known. To address this knowledge gap, we have developed an approach to analyze responses of organizations to environmental change and evolving social demands for biodiversity conservation. We analyze the scale, scope, and distribution of the resources and competencies that support the delineation of ecologically significant habitats in intensively managed nonindustrial private forests in Finland, an important international actor in the...

Local Consequences of Applying International Norms: Differences in the Application of Forest Certification in Northern Sweden, Northern Finland, and Northwest Russia Ecology and Society
Tysiachniouk, Maria; Centre for Independent Social Research, St. Petersburg, Russia; tysiachn@indepsocres.spb.ru.
Forest certification, developed in the early 1990s, is a process in which independent assessors grant use of the certification label to producers who meet certain environmental and social criteria set for their forest products. This label was quickly seen to offer a market advantage and to signal corporate social and environmental responsibility. This paper focuses on international norms pertaining to environmental and indigenous rights, as manifested in cases of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-compatible certification, and how these norms have been applied domestically and perceived locally in different states. Case studies are drawn from northern Sweden, northern Finland, and three...

Monitoring Current Status of and Trends in Boreal Forest Land Use in Russian Karelia Ecology and Society
Burnett, Charles; University of Salzburg; charles.burnett@sbg.ac.at; Fall, Andrew; Simon Fraser University; fall@cs.sfu.ca; Tomppo, Erkki; Finnish Forest Research Institute; Erkki.Tomppo@metla.fi; Kalliola, Risto; University of Turku; risto.kalliola@utu.fi.
Some of the last remaining near-natural boreal forest landscapes in northern Europe can be found in the Russian Karelia near its border with Finland. Currently, these forests are facing strong exploitation pressure in the form of extensive clearcuts. Demand for conservation is also high. We characterize the boreal forest landscape in the region and assess the impacts of past and potential management actions through a mapping and modeling study that synthesizes methods from landscape ecology, remote sensing, and simulation modeling. The forests of the study area were mapped using techniques for interpreting multitemporal satellite images and detecting changes. The species composition and structure of the forests were estimated using the multisource...

Peristenus varisae spec. nov. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizing the European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Heteroptera: Miridae) Naturalis
Varis, A.-L.; Achterberg, C. van.
Nymphs and adults of Lygus species, mainly L. rugulipennis Poppius were collected from wheat fields in southern Finland, near Helsinki. The parasitization rate of braconid species was determined by dissection of the hosts. Parasitoids were reared from separate samples from the same fields. The parasitization rate was low, the maximum percentage occurring during the season, examined in 10-day periods, was 14%. All nymphal instars, except the first one, were found to be parasitized; the mean varied from 3% (third instar) to 6.5% (fourth instar). In adult hosts the mean parasitization rate was 2% in males and 4% in females. The percentage of parasitization in both nymphs and adults was higher in wheat bordering fields with a mixture of field bean and oats or...

Local food and municipal food services: case Kiuruvesi, Finland Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, Helmi.
In Finland, the Kiuruvesi municipality is the pioneer in use of local and organic food (LOF) in the statutory municipal catering services. The LOF strategy is based on territorial approach, and it was adopted as one means of enhancing the attractiveness of the remotely located municipality with unfavorable population development. The local policymakers have been fully committed to the strategy, and this has enabled the consistent development during nearly two decades. The Kiuruvesi case demonstrates the gradual shift of focus in the competitive bidding process from price-based tendering towards anticipatory dialogue and interaction between the suppliers and catering personnel. Over the years the LOF concept has brought about various kinds of food...

Poster: Organic milk as a sustainability strategy for Finnish milk system Organic Eprints
Mikkola, Minna.
Dairy farming in Finland is historically a mode of family farming, although modes like dairy farm companies and collaborative farms are increasing. Organic farmers are relatively young, well educated and their farms are modern and in the average, rather large. The use of automated milking systems (AMS) allows larger cattle sizes and makes work easier compared with previous methods. The organic cows’ feed is mainly grown on the farm, which makes organic milk production truly local business. The feeding is based on clover-grass silage, barley, oats, pea and rape-seed, the latter being often commercial. The organic cows produce about 8 000 kg milk yearly featuring a fairly reasonable level of intensity. The relatively small cattle sizes support disease...

Paikallisten lähiruokatuottajien kansallinen verkosto. Johtopäätöksiä Kestävät hankinnat ja HealthyGrowth -hankkeiden kokemuksista Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, Helmi.
The presentation examines the drivers and bottlenecks in use of local food in public catering in Finland. The SME local eneterpreneurs have difficiulties in getting foot hold in the heavily competed Finnish food markets, where two major actors dominate. It is concluded that public sector could provide an oopportunity for local producers to develop and grow. This however, requires determined co-operation both among the SME suppliers and among the suppliers and the actors of the catering sector.

Increasing organic consumption by school meals – lessons learned in the iPOPY project Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Nölting, Benjamin.
Increasingly, food consumption occurs in out-of-home contexts, where organic food can also have a role to play. Public food services may be utilised to increase the sustainability of providing nutrition. Although school meals may be well suited to integrating organic food and sustainable nutrition concepts, school food provision systems are very different across Europe. This paper compares school food provision systems and their utilisation of organic food in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway, discussing how various strategies and instruments used for organic food procurement in school meals may increase organic food consumption. Using five analytical categories—(a) type of school food service, (b) degree of public financing, (c)...

Report on Organic Food and Farming in Finland Organic Eprints
Nykänen, Arja; Järvenpää, Markku.
The interest in research on organic farming grew in the beginning of the 1980s. In 1980, an extensive seven-year-project started in cooperation between several institutions investigating the possibility to improve the efficiency of nitrogen fixation and utilisation of nitrogen fertilisers and cow manure. Two extensive comparative projects began in 1982: (1) conventional and organic cropping systems at Suitia, University of Helsinki and (2) self-sufficient crop rotation and cropping system by the Agricultural Research Centre of Finland at its regional research stations. In September 1985, the Partala Centre for Rural Development for research on organic farming was founded in Juva. The University of Helsinki, Juva municipality and some other organisations...

Organic and conventional public food procurement for youth in Finland Organic Eprints
Mikkola, Minna.
Public catering in Finland has strong historical roots from the 19th century, connected with the rise of the national state, industrialisation, democracy and modern times in general. The school meal system developed hand in hand with work place meal services, and inherently the aim was to offer lateral support for workers' and pupils' activities by healthy and wholesome nutrition. The public catering had initially a strong label of welfare services and implied economical use of ingredients. Later on, the character of public service of the welfare state was emphasised, as public catering was perceived as a way to promote equality between citizens. The public meal system, and school meal system as part of it, represented not a self-evident and 'natural'...

Perception of food and locality among Chinese tourist experiences in Finland Organic Eprints
Ma, Fanyi; Liu, Xiuhua; Tikkanen-Kaukanen, Carina; Särkkä-Tirkkonen, Marjo; Mynttinen, Sinikka.
The study applies qualitative methods to reach a more in-depth understanding of Chinese tourists’ relations to food during their visit to Finland. The main interest is to find out how they perceive food and tourism, local food, environmentally friendly food and organic food during their trip. The preliminary results show that the Finnish food and food culture is not familiar among Chinese tourists and they have difficulties to identify the local food in holiday destinations. Concept of organic food was better understood than environmentally friendly food. Attributes like healthy, safer, natural, green, expensive and luxury were associated to the organic food. Additionally, organic food was considered to fulfill high quality standards.
