Várzea and terra-firme forests in the lower course of the Amazon were compared in terms of forest structure, wood volume increments and forest biomass. The wood volume of várzea forests was smaller than that of terra-firme forests, particularly when severe human intervention such as the cultivation of açaí palm occurred. The difference was even greater in the forest weight comparison because of the lower wood density of várzea trees. These trees are not directly influenced by water stress during the dry season, while late wood with a high density is formed in the terra-firme trees. The annual forest disappearance area due to firewood for tile factories was estimated to be about 276 ha on the island investigated, which had an area of 36,200 ha. Assuming... ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of forest biomass energy, coming from the Caatinga, for different storage times in the field. The study was conducted in southern Piauí, between January and February (rainy season). Samples were collected containing branches and trunks of various species, and samples of branches and trunks separately in 5 sample units of 20x20m. Samples were evaluated in the general state freshly harvested and samples of branches and logs after 15 and 30 days of storage in piles in the field. Este artigo trata de uma análise da série histórica do mercado paranaense de lenha e carvão, no período de 1997 a 2007, levando em consideração os parâmetros preço e produção. Com relação ao preço, procedeu-se a análise envolvendo a lenha de bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella Benth.), eucalipto (Eucalyptus spp.), pinus (Pinus spp.) e mista – na propriedade rural (em pé), posta no carreador e entregue ao consumidor; tanto quanto se calculou a distância média percorrida entre a área original e o destino citado. Da mesma forma, comparou-se o preço obtido do carvão de pinus, bracatinga, eucalipto, lenha mista e resíduos de madeira – na propriedade rural, atacado e varejo.
