Local ecological knowledge is not a useful source of information concerning impacts caused by non-native Nile tilapia on fishery stocks - doi 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.18418 Biological Sciences
Brasil, Jandeson; Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte; Bastos, Fernando; Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte; Mourão, José da Silva; Universidade Estadual da Paraíba.
Exotic freshwater fish can have deleterious effects on local biodiversity, although these impacts often only become apparent many years after the introduction. Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) may be a useful source of information in situations where formal technical studies are insufficient, but few works have examined the reliability of information generated through this approach. We examined the reliability of LEK by investigating the impacts of Nile tilapia on fishery stocks in an artificial reservoir in northeastern Brazil. We gathered LEK from 29 experienced fishermen and then confronted this information with official fishery statistics from the same site. Twenty-two fishermen stated that total catch in the Gargalheiras Reservoir had declined over...

Payment scheme for environmental services as a management strategy to regulate artisanal fishing in the Integrated Management District Cispata, Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
López Navarro,Johann; Contreras Araque,Andrea.
ABSTRACT Marine and coastal ecosystems are characterized as highly productive areas in terms of the benefits they provide to humanity, with food provision being one of the most important. In 2018, in the Cispata Integrated Management District (DMI Cispata), due to the decrease in fishing resources, artisanal fishermen signed agreements for the recovery of the resource; however, they have not been implemented for various reasons. This study shows the viability of a Payment Scheme for Environmental Services as an alternative to induce compliance with fishing agreements. The analysis developed here indicates that the DMI Cispata fulfills the necessary conditions to implement this economic instrument benefiting 20 fishing organizations in the area.

OceanDocs
Lagos, A.N..
There is a lack of scientific information about the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). Moreover, this artisanal sector does not have fishing statistics because local fishermen are not obliged to hand in fishing reports, where even basic data on catch and fleet effort should be included. The main objective was the analysis of the artisanal fishery in the de la Costa County from the biological, economic and social point of view. One 132 sample stations were analyzed between 56 degree -57 degree W and 36 degree -37 degree S from 1992 to 1999. Moreover, information on the artisanal fleet, environmental conditions and the arrival of tourists to the de la Costa County was also analyzed. Fishing yield (FY) per boat was...

Seck, A..

Dia, A.D..

What Does the Future Hold for Malagasy Coastal Communities? OceanDocs
Randrianasoavina, F..
Traditional fisheries in Madagascar provide the main source of livelihood for over 100,000 fishermen from 1250 communities along 5,000 kms of coast. The fishery provides 50% of the Malagasy fish catch and supplies 70% of the fish locally consumed. Despite this, the sector is not recognised officially, and is marginalised from mainstream national economic development. Since 1995 a group of Malagasy NGOs, supported by European NGOs, have been drawing public attention – both locally and internationally – to this situation. Over the last 6 years they have carried out a number of programmes both locally and internationally. These have involved studying and documenting the traditional sector, organising formal meetings between representatives from traditional...
