The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads.... |

A preliminary investigation was conducted with freshly caught West African long croaker (Pseudotolithus typus). Half of the fish stored at ambient temperature (28 - 32oC) for 5, 12, 13, 24 and 36 hours were gutted. These conditions enable a high rate of fish deterioration and spoilage; thus facilitating the elaboration of characteristics which would subsequently be used to establish some sensory guidelines for fish quality evaluation in Nigeria. Several sensory deteriorative changes were observed whose application for sensory assessment may be time consuming and confusing to Fish Quality Inspectors. Hence, it is concluded from this study that the most important sensory quality indices which can be used as guidelines for the Nigerian Fishing Industry and... |

The potential of the fishery resources of Nigeria (marine, brackish and freshwater) is assessed by means of primary and secondary data. The status of fish culture and its rapid development possibilities are discussed. Catch disposal and wastage therefore are critically examined. The inshore artisanal fisheries which have access to 128,000-170,000 mt of demersal pelagic and shellfish resources annually appear to be almost fully exploited. There is hope however for increased capture gear efficiency. On the other hand, the demersal stocks of the inshore industrial fishery, with a potential of 20,000 m.t. are still under-utilised. If poaching is eliminated, 3,500-4,000 mt of shrimp P. notialis can be harvested along with 7,000 mt of good sized fish as by... |

Two different groups of lobsters are of commercial importance in the Seychelles: spiny lobsters and slipper lobsters. The spiny lobsters are: Panulirus penicillatus, Panulirus longipes, Panulirus versicolor and Panulirus ornatus. Fishing for spiny lobster in Seychelles is a traditional activity in the shallow waters surrounding the main granitic Islands. Fishing is conducted at night by skin divers operating with lights. Following the development of the tourist industry during the seventies the local demand for lobsters increased to several tonnes a year. After being open for many years, the fishery was closed from 1983 to 1989. The fishery was reopen from December 1989 to May 1990, during which time an estimated 10 tonnes of spiny lobsters were supplied... |

The fisheries policy of the Government of Seychelles was first drafted in 1986. At that time, both the industrial and artisanal fisheries in Seychelles were in a developmental stage and the policy reflected the needs to promote both the development and conservation of our marine resources as well as maximizing benefits. In 1985 the number of licenses issued for the industrial tuna fishery was 49 for the purse seiners and 165 for longliners with an annual purse seine catch of 130,000 tonnes. The total catch for the industrial purse seine fishery has continued to rise and peaked at around 407, 000 tonnes in the year 2003. The artisanal fishing fleet has declined from 410 vessels in 1985 to 330 in the year 2003, however, the nature of the fleet has changed... |

Between 1969-1980, the annual shrimp catch ranged from 585 to 21116 tonnes. The percentage of shrimp in the total catch showed a sharp decline from 75% in 1969 to 18% in 1979 while the fish by-catch rose from 25% to 82. The shrimps were abundant during the rains (April to September). The number of shrimpers and effort rose by 338% and 337% respectively. The mean annual catch per unit effort (cpue) ranged between 0,196 in 1972 and 0.365 (tonne per day out of (port) in 1975. Japan, United States of America, and Britain are the main importers of Nigerian shrimps. |

The desire of the nation has been to attain self–sufficiency in food production by the year 2000. More importantly, the need is to increase the animal protein intake of the average Nigeria, which has been low, at about 19.38g/Capita/day, far below the 65 g/Capita/day recommended by FAO in the light of its identification as the indicator and determinant of dietary quality. In the agricultural sector, all fisheries products have great contributions towards the provision of animal protein thus the concern for constant improvement of the fisheries sub-sector of agriculture. Successive governments in Nigeria have introduced several measures to achieve increase in food production. As it affects the fisheries sub-sector, one of the identified constraints to... |
