Galeoides decadactylis is a commercially important species of the family polynemidae and constituted 10-20% by weight of the total landing of the trawl fishery in the 60s (Longhurst 1964a). Between 1971 and 1985 landing figures of the fish showed a fall of 7 – 8% by weight of total fish landed (FDF and NIOMR. 1986). Length frequency distribution showed the average size of fish landed by the commercial fishing company was 23.03cm while that of the Institute’s Research vessel was 18.89cm. Catch curve analysis showed that the fully exploited length ranged between 17 and 31cm. The length at infinity (Lx) obtained was 47.75cm while the growth coefficient (Z) was 0.20. Estimated total mortality (z) was 0.36. The stock size estimates was 10,090.54 tonnes,... |

The spatial and temporal distribution of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris in Fortaleza Bay, northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil, in relation to abiotic factors, was studied. Shrimp samples were obtained on a monthly basis from November 1988 through October 1989 at seven pre-delimited transects on board of a fishing vessel supplied with double otter trawl nets. Depth was recorded at the midpoint of each transect; water and sediment samples were taken to measure salinity, temperature, texture and organic matter content of sediment. The shrimps obtained in the trawls were sorted, identified and 100 g subsample at each transect was separated for measurements (carapace length). A total of 3,083 individuals were obtained. Shrimps were more abundant from... |

The objective of this work is to increase knowledge on the distribution and punctual density of both morphotypes of Munida gregaria in the San Jorge Gulf, Argentina. The data derived from the research cruise carried out on board of the FV Álvarez Entrena I in February 2011. Specimens of gregaria and subrugosa were caught in 37 and 73 of the 91 trawls performed, respectively. Out of the total of positive trawls, 17 were performed at depths lower than 55 m and the remaining 60 at deeper waters. The relative average abundance of both morphotypes increased significantly with regard to the two previous years (2009, 2010). M. gregaria subrugosa represented 66.4% and gregaria the remaining percentage. In the south sector of the gulf, where the highest punctual... |

The study on distribution and abundance of eggs and early planktonic stages of red shrimp, Pleoticus muelleri (Bate, 1888), contributes to a better knowledge of the species dynamics. Results from processing and analyzing 72 plankton samples collected with Bongo net during two research cruises on board of FV “Arbumasa XVIII” and RV “Capitán Oca Balda”, carried out in the Patagonian littoral in March 2008 and January 2009, are presented. In both cruises, eggs and larval stages were found all over the study area. The highest punctual densities of eggs were recorded in the area known as “La Pared” (46° 45’ S-65° 55’ W and 46° 50’ S-65° 55’ W). Eggs indicate the presence of shrimp reproductive concentrations which, while migrating eastwards towards waters of... |

To standardize false king crab catch rates and transform them into abundance indices it is essential to count on a model that adequately describes the relation between catch per trap and fishing time. Considering data derived from research surveys carried out on board of the artisanal fleet in the Beagle Channel, assuming an asymptotic catch trend and absence of escape, to describe the relation an exponential model was applied. The Coo (asymptotic catch) and a (income rate) parameters of the model allowed to build a correction factor to transform the catches obtained with different fishing times into relative abundance indices. The model provides, besides, the optimum time to maximize catches. Para estandarizar las tasas de captura de centollón y... |

The Coastal Project developed at the INIDEP (Mar del Plata,Argentina) offers an analysis on the operative modality of coastal assessment surveys, proposing an information process useful to standardize data collection and processes of future surveys. The efficiency of the evaluation of strata used until the year 1993 was analyzed and a new stratification is proposed. The aim was to define area-strata of importance for the main coastal species, using the traditional stratification of the coastal ecosystem and the mew methodology. The reason for redefining strata is that a decrease was been detected in the number of traditional species and an increment on the biomass of non-commercial species and, associated with it, the development of new explotation areas.... |

Precision of abundance index estimation Merluccius hubbsi is directly related with the variability that normally occurs during the fishing operation and consequently in the geometry of the net duringeach haul. Some of these factors can be controlled, therefore the standardization of the sampling methodology avoids differences in the behaviour and 'work' of the net minimizing variations in the catchability between hauls. The acoustic equipment (SCANMAR) in there search vessels, allows to monitore the fishing operation during the trawl and to develop strategies in order to reduce the variability and to improve the precision of the estimations. The applicability of the methodology and there for the validity of the estimates indifferent cruises must be studied... |

To evaluate absolute biomass, a research cruise was conducted on three scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds (38°S-56°W, September 1998). The estimated bed surface was 1,162 nm(2). Sampling stations were regularly spaced at 5 nm intervals. A total of 118 trawls were performed with a non-selective dredge 2,5 m wide (efficiency 16-21. ). Trawls duration and speed were 10 minutes and 3 nm.h(-1)respectively. Samples were taken to estimate total and commercial (greater or equal than 55 mm total height)scallop weight and size frequency distribution. Coefficients of variation (CV)of the estimated biomass were calculated for each bed using geoestatistical techniques and a simple random sampling alternative with the same number of samples. The CVs for total scallop... |

Between 1963 and 1990, the abundance of demersal fishery resources in Ghana’s shelf waters underwent significant changes whereby the relative importance of major species changed in every trawl survey conducted in the area. Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) dominated this ecosystem for nearly twenty years (from early 1970s to late 1980s) displacing bigeye grunt (Brachydeuterus auritus) as the most abundant species. The density of all demersal species (excluding triggerfish) assessed in bottom trawl surveys decreased from 50 kg ha-1 in 1963-64 to 32.4 kg ha-1 in 1990. The lowest density of 22.5 kg ha-1 occurred between 1973 and 1977. Density of triggerfish was high between 1973 and 1982, reaching a value of 28 kg ha-1 between depths of 30 and 50 m. Its... |
