Fishing fleet typology, economic dependence, and species landing profiles of the French fleets in the Bay of Biscay, 2000-2006 ArchiMer
Daures, Fabienne; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Van Iseghem, Sylvie; Trenkel, Verena.
Thirty French fleets fishing primarily in the Bay of Biscay were defined based on techno-economic input criteria: i) 18 fishing gear or gear combinations ii) the location of fishing grounds visited during a year (<12 nautical miles from coast, beyond 12 nm or both) and iii) total vessel length (<20 m for trawlers and other gears <24 m). The fleets were then characterised in terms of horse power, economic dependence on a list of nine dominant commercial species (sole, Nephrops, sea bass, hake, monkfish, anchovy, cuttlefish, sardine and squid) and their contribution to the landings of these species from the Bay of Biscay. Most fleets derived the majority of their income from one or two among the nine species. Species dependencies changed little...

Managing fleet capacity effectively under second-hand market redistribution ArchiMer
Quillerou, Emmanuelle; Roudaut, Nolwenn; Guyader, Olivier.
Fishing capacity management policies have been traditionally implemented at national level with national targets for capacity reduction. More recently, capacity management policies have increasingly targeted specific fisheries. French fisheries spatially vary along the French coastline and are associated to specific regions. Capacity management policies however ignore the capital mobility associated with second-hand vessel trade between regions. This is not an issue for national policies but could limit the effectiveness of regional capacity management policies. A gravity model and a random-effect Poisson regression model are used to analyse the determinants and spatial extent of the second-hand market in France. This study is based on panel data from the...

The PELGAS survey: ship-based integrated monitoring of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Petitgas, Pierre; Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Huret, Martin; Duhamel, Erwan; Dupuy, Christine; Spitz, Jerome; Authier, Matthieu; Sanchez, Florence; Berger, Laurent; Doremus, Ghislain; Bourriau, Paul; Grellier, Patrick; Masse, Jacques.
The Pélagiques Gascogne (PELGAS) integrated survey has been developed by a multidisciplinary team of Ifremer and La Rochelle University scientists since 2000, joined by commercial fishermen in 2007. Its initial focus was to assess the biomass and predict the recruitment success of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Taking advantage of the space and versatility of R/V Thalassa II, sampling has been progressively extended to other ecosystem components. PELGAS therefore further developed the second objective of monitoring and studying the dynamic and diverse Biscay pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey model has allowed for the establishment of a long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem since...

Carozza, C.R.; Perrotta, R.G.; Cotrina, C.P.; Bremec, C.; Aubone, A..
This work deals with the structure and efficiency of the fleet fishing white croaker in Argentina. Results show that there exist two strata delimited by 17.25 m length and 345 HP vessels. The most efficient is constituted by those of smaller dimensions. During 1992-1995 landings were sampled and subsequently analyzed. A decrease in mean length landed and an increase of juveniles presence were detected. The situation coincided with an increment of catches, landings, fishing effort, exports and the fleet activities in "El Salado" area (35° 57' - 36° 57' LS).

Hansen, J.E..
Basic aspects of the fising of Bonito in Argentina such as: catch statistics, fleet and gears, season and fishing grounds, and catch per unit effort (CPUE)are analized. FAO World Catch Statistics show that none of the different populations of Sarda sarda or other species of the Genus may support a highly productive fishery Exceptions are Sarda chilensis and S.sarda from the Black Sea, which us exploited by Turkey. On the basis of available information it may be inferred that the Bonito of Argentina has more competitors and a narrower thophic spectrum than that from the Black Sea.

Hernandez, D.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
The problem in the definition of a relative annual abundance index using a General Linear Model is posed. The possible factors generating changes in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) are discussed and the parameterization of the model is analyzed, in particular the Sigma-restrictive parameterization. This report considers the problem caused by the presence of interactions of first order that include the factor Year in the model. It has been mathematically demonstrated that in the presence of these interactions, the index series is not proportional to the abundance annual mean of the resource. An approach of practical order to evaluate the possible effect of the interactions that include the factor Year in the index is considered using the percentage of...

Irusta, G.; Bezzi, S.I.; Simonazzi, M.A.; Castrucci, R..
The evolution of argentine landings, characteristics of trawl fleets, principal ports, landings per fleet and management unit (north and south of 41°S), areas and fishing seasons are described. Main results show a continuous increase of argentine hake landings as of 1987. Freezers, that operated in the Patagonian zone along the whole year, was the fleet that most contributed to said increase while the ice chilling fleet maintained its level of landings in the period considered. During the second and third quarter of 1996 and 1997, in the north management unit, the fleet fished in the argentine sector of the Common Fishing Zone and north of 41°S. During 1996, in the south management unit, the main fishing zones for both fleets were northeast of Escondida...

OceanDocs
Errazti, E.; Hernandez, D.R.; Bertolotti, M.I.; Buono, J.J..
This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year...

Irusta, C.G.; Aubone, A.; Simonazzi, M.A.; Ibañez, P.M..
In this paper detailed mathematical description of the generalized lineal model used and data grouping criteria are presented in order to estimate the relative fishing power of four categories of the hake ice-chilled fleet. The analysis was focused to the patagonian sector (41°-48°S) of the hake total distribution area. The fleet has systematically operated in the same fishing areas between 1989-1993. The variables that better explain in yields trends of each vessel category were analyzed. The fishing power of vessels with power higher than 1200 HP has been raising since 1990 because of increasing efficiency. These vessels generate three times more fishing mortality than the standard vessels (lower than 700 HP)
