The use of morphometric analysis to predict the swimming efficiency of two Neotropical long-distance migratory species in fish passage Neotropical Ichthyology
Assumpção,Lucileine de; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Makrakis,Sergio; Wagner,Ricardo Luiz; Silva,Patrícia Sarai da; Lima,Ariane Furtado de; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz.
This study investigated the external body morphology (based on morphometric data) and the swimming efficiency in fish passages (based on the ascent time in a fish ladder) of two Neotropical long-distance migratory species. The fish were collected in the fish ladder of the Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Plant (known as Engenheiro Sergio Motta), upper Paraná River, Brazil. The species differ in several morphometric ratios related to swimming performance. Prochilodus lineatus exhibited a higher muscle ratio and caudal fin length ratio. However, Leporinus elongatus showed higher values for the fineness ratio, a higher length from snout to pectoral fin base ratio, and a higher caudal peduncle depth factor. Although both species show good swimming...

Swimming performance of the migratory Neotropical fish Leporinus reinhardti (Characiformes: Anostomidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Hersília de Andrade e; Pompeu,Paulo dos Santos; Martinez,Carlos Barreira.
The fishways built in Latin America were mainly based on those used in the northern hemisphere for passing salmonids upstream. However, the swimming capacity in terms of speed and endurance is a major factor concerning the design of a fishway, and this information is not available for migratory neotropical fish species. Therefore, studies on swimming performance of neotropical species is fundamental. The aim of this study was to estimate the critical, sustained and prolonged speeds for the piau-três-pintas Leporinus reinhardti, and to evaluate the influence of water temperature on the swimming performance of the species. Variable (increasing) and fixed velocity tests were performed in a respirometer. When compared to other species whose critical speed data...

Passage performance of long-distance upstream migrants at a large dam on the Paraná River and the compounding effects of entry and ascent Neotropical Ichthyology
Wagner,Ricardo Luiz; Makrakis,Sergio; Castro-Santos,Theodore; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Dias,João Henrique Pinheiro; Belmont,René Fuster.
This paper presents results of a fishway evaluation performed at the Engenheiro Sérgio Motta Hydroelectric Power Plant (known as Porto Primavera) - CESP, Paraná River, Brazil. The evaluation was designed to quantify entry and passage proportions of 4 long-distance migratory fish species: Brycon orbignyanus (piracanjuba), Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu), Prochilodus lineatus (curimba), and Rhinelepis aspera (cascudo-preto). Proportions finding and entering the fishway differed between species, ranged from 7.4 % (Prochilodus lineatus) to 55.4% (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Also, proportion passing was different between species, ranged from 31% (R. aspera) to 100% (Prochilodus lineatus). Fish that were marked and released within the fishway had greater failure...

The Canal da Piracema at Itaipu Dam as a fish pass system Neotropical Ichthyology
Makrakis,Sérgio; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Fernandez,Domingo Rodriguez; Pavanelli,Carla Simone.
The Canal da Piracema is the longest (nearly 10 km) fish pass system in the world. The construction of this fish pass was somehow controversial, because it connected two distinct ichthyofaunistic provinces. This study evaluated the ichthyofauna present in the Canal da Piracema and the abundance and distribution of long-distance migratory fish species along this fish pass system (evaluated possible selectivity). The Canal da Piracema was shown to be difficult to sample because of its environmental heterogeneity: artificial ponds, ladders and nature-like fish pass. To solve this problem, we used several fishing gears, adequate for the several biotopes present (unstructured and structured littoral were sampled with seining nets and electrofishing; lentic were...

Efficiency and selectivity of a trap and truck fish passage system in Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pompeu,Paulo dos Santos; Martinez,Carlos Barreira.
The construction of fish passages has been one of the strategies adopted by the Brazilian energy sector in order to diminish the effects of barriers on fish communities. However, studies of the efficiency of these mechanisms are scarce. The present study evaluated the efficiency and selectivity of the first trap and truck fish passage system in Brazil, installed in Santa Clara Dam, Mucuri River. The species composition in the Santa Clara Dam fish lift was compared to the original composition of Mucuri River fish fauna and with the populations that gather downstream of the dam during the reproductive season. The proportion of previously tagged individuals translocated by the lift was used to estimate its efficiency. During the 2003/2004 reproductive period,...

Fish passages in South America: an overview of studied facilities and research effort Neotropical Ichthyology
Lira,Nibelle A.; Pompeu,Paulo S.; Agostinho,Carlos S.; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Arcifa,Marlene Sofia; Pelicice,Fernando M..
ABSTRACT River regulation has fragmented fluvial ecosystems in South America, affecting fish migration and dispersion dynamics. In response, authorities have installed fish passage facilities (FPF) to mitigate impacts. However, little is known about the geographical distribution of these facilities, and no synthesis of the research effort applied to understanding their functioning and limitations exists. To address this issue, our study gathered the available scientific literature about fishways in South America to provide an overview of studied FPF and associated research effort. We found 80 studies that investigated 25 FPF, mostly ladders installed in the upper reaches of large rivers, particularly in the Paraná River Basin. One important finding is that...

Fish passage post-construction issues: analysis of distribution, attraction and passage efficiency metrics at the Baguari Dam fish ladder to approach the problem Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Luiz Gustavo Martins da; Nogueira,Lorena Bettinelli; Maia,Bruno Pereira; Resende,Lucas Borges de.
Fish passages are considered the oldest management tool used to minimize the impact of blocking fish migratory routes by hydroelectric power plants. However, fish passages are being installed without specific criteria in Brazil, with severe consequences to the conservation of the local fish fauna. Therefore, basic data gathered for fish passages already constructed could contribute to define operational rules, in addition to offer subsidies to decision-making and design of future facilities. Thus, the fish ladder of Baguari Dam was evaluated regarding temporal distribution, attraction, and ascension of the local fish fauna. A total of 20 fish samples were conducted immediately downstream of the dam and inside the fish ladder, from January 2010 to June...
