Última Modelling The Cattle Breeding Production in the Czech Republic AgEcon Mach, Jiri; Kristkova, Zuzana. This paper proves that the use of the Cobb-Douglas form of production function is suitable for modelling the technological efficiency of selected production factors used in cattle breeding. Furthermore, it is possible to use the estimated function to analyse economic efficiency, considering also the prices of the production factors. The results of the econometric estimation show that higher initial weight affects negatively the dynamics of weight gain. Analysing the efficiency of the two main feedstuff components, i.e. the haylage and hay, it was found out that the increases in weight react inelastically with respect to the volume of feedstuffs, which is in line with the physiological limits of the animal production. Zoning decisions related to residential lot size and density affect residential land value. Effects of size on residential parcel value in Roanoke County, VA, are estimated with fixed effects hedonic models. Parcel size; elevation; soil permeability; proximity to urban areas, malls, and roads; and location influence parcel value, but the effects vary by value of construction and development status. Parcel value per square meter declines with increasing parcel size. The estimated relationships could be used to evaluate zoning decisions in terms of land values and tax revenues if model estimation uncertainties and responses by developers to zoning strategies are considered. This article proposes a memory-saving decomposition of the design matrix to facilitate the estimation of a linear model with two high-dimensional fixed effects. A common way to fit such a model is to take into account one of the effects by including dummy variables and to sweep out the other effect by the within transformation (fixed-effects transformation). If the number of panel units is high, creating and storing the dummy variables can involve prohibitively large computer-memory requirements. In experimental studies, children exposed to television food ads chose less healthy snacks and consumed more food overall, as compared with children exposed only to ads for toys. These findings, however, do not indicate that TV viewing causes a decrease in diet quality or an increase in weight. Other factors correlated with TV watching, such as neighborhood and parent and child characteristics, may be more to blame. We estimate the effect of an additional hour of television on total calories and the quality of food consumed during a day for children 6 to 18 years old. This research is the first to use a first difference (fixed effects) estimation strategy to investigate the impact of television on daily food consumption among children in the United States. This study confirms that eating food away from home (FAFH) adversely affects dietary intake. By looking at changes within individuals’ dietary intake over two days, thus controlling for self-selection issues, we find that FAFH causes increased caloric intake and reduced diet quality. Our estimates on the effect of specific meals show that lunch and dinner consumed away from home have the largest effect on total daily caloric intake, but that breakfast has the largest negative effect on total diet quality. In particular, eating breakfast away from home decreases intake of fruit, whole grains and dairy and increases the percent of calories from saturated fats and solid fats, alcohol and added sugar. Where possible, we make the fixed-effects methods originally developed by Abowd, Kramarz, and Margolis (Econometrica 67: 251–333) for linked worker-firm data more accessible. We also show how these methods can be implemented in Stata. There is a caveat, however. If the researcher wants to recover estimates of the error components themselves, and the number of units at the higher level of aggregation is large, memory or matrix constraints may make using Stata to estimate the components themselves infeasible. Irrigation water demand is estimated using field-level panel data from Kansas over 16 years. The cost of pumping varies over time due to changes in energy prices and across space due to differences in the depth to water. Exploiting this variation allows us to estimate the demand elasticity while controlling for field-farmer and year fixed effects. Fixed effects also allow us to control for land use without an instrument or assumptions about the distribution of errors. Our estimates of water demand are used to calculate the cost of reducing irrigation water use through water pricing, irrigation cessation, and intensity-reduction programs. This analysis of consumer food choice developed a consumer demand model to illustrate how both long-term health objectives and immediate visceral influences—long intervals between meals and away-from-home eating—can affect individuals’ food choices. The model predicts that dietary knowledge will have less influence on food choices in the face of immediate visceral factors.
