Seasonal changes of leaf Nitrogen content in trees of Amazonian floodplains 36
PAROLIN,Pia; ARMBRÜSTER,Nicole; JUNK,Wolfgang J..
In Amazonian floodplains the trees are exposed to extreme flooding of up to 230 days a year. Waterlogging of the roots and stems affects growth and metabolic activity of the trees. An increased leaf fall in the aquatic period and annual increment rings in the wood indicate periodical growth reductions. The present study aims at documenting seasonal changes of metabolism and vitality of adult trees in the annual cycle as expressed by changes of leaf nitrogen content. Leaves of six tree species common in floodplains in Central Amazonia and typical representants of different growth strategies were collected every month between May 1994 and June 1995 in the vicinity of Manaus, Brazil. Mean leaf nitrogen content varied between 1.3% and 3.2% in the non-flooded...

Vegetational changes during the last millennium inferred from a palynological record from the Bananal Island, Tocantins, Brazil 36
MENDES,Laís Aguiar da Silveira; PIRES,Etiene Fabbrin; MENESES,Maria Ecilene Nunes da Silva; BEHLING,Hermann.
The Bananal Island is regarded the largest fluvial island in the world, bounded by Araguaia and Javaés rivers, being located in southwest of Tocantins. The objectives of this work were to provide information about the vegetational changes that occurred at the Bananal Island, in order to contribute to the understanding the dynamics of past and current savanna and areas of ecotones with forests. Thus, a sedimentary core collected from a small lake at the Bananal Island plain was submitted to pollen and radiocarbon dating analyses. The results showed that the last millennium was dominated by forest reflecting a wet climate. At the beginning of the record (920-770 yr cal BP) the wet climate and high rainfall produced flooding during long rainy seasons that...

River damming affects seedling communities of a floodplain forest in the Central Amazon 39
Rocha,Maíra da; Feitosa,Yuri Oliveira; Wittmann,Florian; Piedade,Maria Teresa Fernandez; Resende,Angélica Faria de; Assis,Rafael Leandro de.
ABSTRACT The flood pulse of black water rivers in the Amazon basin determines the composition of species along the flood gradient in igapó forests. The Balbina dam, built on the Uatumã River, has altered the flood pulse and caused changes in the floristic composition of adult trees throughout the downstream area. There is a lack of studies on how communities of seedlings in igapó forests respond to changes in the flood pulse. This study investigates the response of seedling communities in the igapó forest downstream the Balbina dam and compares it with two pristine areas. The areas were sampled with transects of 1x25 m within 36 plots (25x25 m) along the flood gradient. Richness and dominance were calculated by simple regression and ordination analyses....

UPFLOW model prediction of capillary rise into root zone soil moisture for shallow water table soils of Obio Akpa river floodplain in the Niger-Delta environment, Nigeria. 111
Udom, Ikpe Jimmy; Nta, Samuel Akpan.
UPFLOW model was used to provide assessments of capillary rise into root zone soil moisture in shallow water table soils of Obio Akpa river floodplain using drum-culture lysimeters. Soil moisture depletion experiment was undertaken through the use of drums with bases intact and drums with bases removed and sunk in the field at different depths during the dry period with no rainfall and no irrigation. UPFLOW model was validated by comparing simulated capillary soil moisture values from a falling water table with gravimetrically observed data from 0 – 500, 500-1000 and, 1000-1500 mm water table  depth in sandy loam and sandy clay soils. Simulated runs mimic the observed fluctuations and trend of capillary rise to the root zone. The statistical pointers of...

The effect of seasonality on the structure of rotifers in a black-water shallow lake in Central Amazonia 42
NOVA,CLARICE C.; LOPES,VANESSA G.; SOUZA,LEONARDO COIMBRA E; KOZLOWSKY-SUZUKI,BETINA; PEREIRA,TALITA A.A.; BRANCO,CHRISTINA W.C..
Rotifers have often been used as indicators of sudden changes in physical and chemical features of the aquatic environment. Such features vary greatly during flood pulse events in small lakes connected to major floodplains. However, few are the studies that investigate the consequences of the flood pulse in rotifer species composition, abundance, richness and diversity, especially in Amazonian lakes. We analyzed samples from a small blackwater lake of an “igarapé” connected permanently to the Negro river, in Central Amazonia. Samples were taken twice a year for two years, comprising flooding and receding periods of the flood pulse. Rotifer abundance increased significantly after draught events, and electrical conductivity and turbidity were intrinsically...

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Pantanal is an extensive wetland with heterogeneous habitats, primarily due to the river-floodplain system and plants with differential adaptations and reproductive strategies. Factors such as altitude, distance among plant formations, and flood pulse must be considered to better understand its diversity. Aiming to assess the influence of biogeographic patterns in this system, we analyzed the floristic composition of six areas along the Paraguay River, including residual relieves, verifying the pattern of similarity, and effects of distance and altitude. We recorded 356 species in 87 families, mostly perennial (75%), and some annuals (15%) and pluriannuals (5%). Herbaceous plants were the most represented (48%), followed by arboreal...

An ordination technique for fish diet comparisons 52
Penczak,Tadeusz; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Hahn,Norma S..
The frequency of nine food types in the guts of 58 fish species from the Paraná River and its floodplain was compared using similarity definition. A synthetic table ordered on the basis of this definition, with fish species on axis y, and food types on axis x, enabled easy reading numerous kinds of information on feeding ecology of fish in the catchment. For example: 1) which fish species were generalists, specialists or opportunists, 2) those classified as herbivorous species consumed small amounts of animal food, 3) that fish consumed any food type that contained transformed solar energy and matter, 4) what are food preferences dependent on fish taxonomic affinity.
