Acceptance of Transgenic Milk in La Araucania Region,Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.

Considering the high level of concern caused by genetically modified foods (GMF) in developed countries, the relevance of this variable in decision-making about the purchase of fluid milk among consumers in Temuco (La Araucanía Region, Chile) was determined. By means of a personal survey of 400 people and using conjoint analysis, it was determined that the presence of genetic modifications in food was more important (44.7%) than brand (29.5%) and price (25.5%) in the decision-making process. By cluster analysis three segments were identified; the largest group (46.5%) gave similar relevance to food production and brand, preferring genetically modified milk. An Analysis of Demand Elasticities for Fluid Milk Products in the U.S. AgEcon

This study examines retail fluid milk products purchase data from Nielsen 2005 home scan data. The demand for seven categories of fluid milk products were estimated: whole milk, whole flavored milk, reduced fat milk, flavored reduced fat milk, buttermilk, canned milk and all other fluid milk products. Analyses of the purchases of seven fluid milk categories based on the Nielsen 2005 home scan retail data are used to determine the roles marital status, age, race, education, female employment status and location play in the empirical estimations of aggregate demand elasticities. FLUID MILK PURCHASE PATTERNS IN THE SOUTH: EFFECTS OF USE OF NUTRITION INFORMATION AND HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS AgEcon

This study measures the impacts of use of nutrition information and household socioeconomic characteristics on market participation and amount purchased of whole-fat and low-fat milks in the South. Data are from the 1987-88 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. The results showed that use of nutrition information had little effect on purchases on the basis of nutritional benefits through health professionals and product packaging are useful tools for the dairy industry to attract market participation.

Oligopoly Pricing with Differentiated Products: The Boston Fluid Milk Market Channel AgEcon

We model Boston fluid milk market after taking into account strategic interactions of the processors and retailers and estimate it using monthly propriety retail scanner data and other data from public sources from 1996 to 2000. Market demand is modeled using flexible nested logit demand system and processor level cost is modeled using flexible generalized Leontief cost function. Our modeled is flexible enough to capture the nature of competition between brands within store and across stores. We find that the brands compete much more vigorously within store and than across stores. This structure of competition fits squarely with Slade's (1995) assumption on retail competition. Modeling the Household Purchasing Process Using a Panel Data Tobit Model AgEcon

A panel data Tobit model is developed to examine the household purchase process for a frequently purchased commodity. The proposed model accounts not only for censoring or sample selectivity, but also the temporal dependence of the purchasing process using household panel data. The flexible error structure in the model accounts for both state dependence and household heterogeneity. Empirical findings show that purchase habits of milk persist across households over time, and most of them come from the household heterogeneity in preferences. Results also show that advertising increases the purchase quantity and purchase frequency simultaneously.

Japanese Consumer Demand for Dairy Products AgEcon

We econometrically estimate consumer demand for dairy products in Japan using time series data for 1960-2003. We identify economic, cultural, and demographic forces that have been influencing dairy consumption patterns. We use the Almost Ideal (AI) Demand System by Deaton and Muellbauer and its variant, the Semiflexible Almost Ideal (SAI) Demand System developed by Moschini to impose concavity locally by reducing the rank of the Hessian of the expenditure function. We estimate three specifications: a full system comprising of four dairy products (fluid milk, powder milk, cheese, and butter), and an allother-goods aggregate; a subsystem for food made of four dairy goods and an all-other-food aggregate; and a sub-system of the four dairy products. Analyses of Generic Dairy Advertising, 1984-97 AgEcon

Generic advertising raised fluid milk sales about 6.0 percent, or 18.1 billion pounds, between September 1984 and September 1997. Sales of cheese rose by about 6.8 billion pounds (milk equivalent) in the same period because of increased generic advertising. An assessment of 15 cents per hundredweight of milk sold commercially, mandated by the Dairy and Tobacco Adjustment Act of 1983, funded the advertising. Activities of the National Fluid Milk Processor Promotion Board also contributed to increased milk sales over the past year. Gross returns to dairy farmers between September 1984 and September 1997 were estimated to increase by $3.44 for each dollar spent on generic advertising.
